Nonsense. Not if you speak the Queen's English.

Do you think Her Majesty spells it like that on her invitations ffs ?

I have no idea Ernie - I do not move in those circles. do you?

However spelling it with a Q is correct - like other english spellings now disappearing under assault from the colonies such as programme etc.

Black and Tans, Peterloo, Tolpuddle Martyrs, Internment, Bloody Sunday, Indian Mutiny, mau mau rebeliion

A weird kind of freedom, as long as what you do does not represent a threat to the ruling class then OK, but as soon as that threat arises then lethal force is acceptable,

I am not saying the UK has not done a lot of good things, just that the element in this country that spends it life looking at the past greatness of the country and putting down the rest of the world whilst this country gets worse needs to shut up and start looking to the future not the past.

We invented this

[img] [/img]

Followed by the industrial revolution and changed the world forever.

I'm sure we should be able to celebrate our achievements as a country without involving a little old lady who's current achievement is to make it to 86 whilst having lived in the lap of luxury all her life.

Some folks just never let you down. .....

Why oh Why do they feel they need to pop up in a thread titled

Proud To Be British Day

surely the title kind of gives the game away ......

If you feel it is not such a day fair enough, i think you're wrong ( imho ) but why not just keep out of the thread ,

I would also suggest those of you who think the Royal family are not relevant or supported in this day and age take a look at the pictures on tele, even I am amazed at the numbers out cheering, just wish I was there

Should I just roll over for my tummy to be tickled? 🙄 Oh wait, isn't that what the UK has been doing for the last 20 years?

We have some silly young boys playing at running the country for a jape, they know diddly squat cos they've led a charmed life. Never mind eh, once they go and earn mega-bucks on the international lecture circuit following their predecessor, some other bugger will think it's a jolly good wheeze and follow suit.

UK inhabitants are being badly let down. Meanwhile this jamboree takes place costing God knows how much and where is the money coming from to pay for it? What services will be cut next?

I have no intention of watching any of it on TV and the sooner this country moves into the 21st century by dispensing with the monarchy the better.

And breathe ...

No. As a loyal and humble subject you should celebrate the great national joy bestowed on us all as a consequence of our sovereign queen's sixty years on the throne.

What's the matter with you woman ? ...... have you no pride in your Britishness ?

No wonder the country's going down the pan.

Its the 1940's weekend in Rammy. I've just had a pint in the pub surrounded by people dressed in period military uniform, for the blokes, and Vera Lynn-a-likes for the ladies, watched a steam train puff past while someone belts out we'll meet again, all while watching the frankly preposterous pomp and ceremony on telly. Anyone from another culture , parachuted in here, would look around and come to the perfectly reasonable assumption that we're all absolutely ****ing mental!!! Completely hatstand bonkers!!!

And THAT is what makes me proud to be British 🙂

For exactly your reaction. Something that we take for granted, is by no means the rule elsewhere in the world. For the fact that you feel able to *ing [well} hope so, I am proud!

Indeed teamhurtmore, and it's the monarchy which guarantees this freedom to tolerate different views.

Except in a few countries where it doesn't. And a few other countries which are republics.

When was France last one of the colonies?

The word “program” was predominant in the UK until the 19th century, when the spelling “programme” became more common — largely as a result of influence from French, which has the same word “programme”.

This orgy of forelock-tugging on the Thames right now makes me ashamed to be British. Utterly boak-inducing.

If this footage of fawning, grovelling subjects prostrating themselves before the Dear Leader was coming out of North Korea, you'd be embarrassed for them.

Well Ernie, that is indeed a very good question albeit not exactly in relation to my point. Where is the causation, if any, between the existence of a monarch and the freedom to tolerate different views?

It would be great to know the answer for sure! But recently, I was on a long car journey (to visit a bike shop for a demo among other things) when there was a whole section of the program on the monarchy. It was either R4 or 5Live I guess. Among the contributors was David Starkey who was promoting his news book. Now I can't make my mind up about him, but neverthless he stated that countries that had monarchies "tended" towards more centralist political environments rather than the more extreme versions and as a result where more tolerant societies. I have meant to read his book to see what evidence that he uses to back things up, but it was an interesting idea. He may be an a*** in public (Newsnight, QT etc) but he does tend to research things pretty thoroughly!

I'm proud to be British. If all the other Brits were too then maybe there'd be considerably fewer acting like pricks.

Nonetheless; aside from the minorities that are workshy scrotes, racists (of all races), on-the-piss hooligans, and self-serving MPs, journalists and bankers, I'm still proud to be British, just like the majority could be if they stopped being told that the scumbags are representative.

Why are you watching it then?

Can't win, people are miserable and it's not good enough, people are happy and it's not good enough.

Coverage is on the TV in the background here and whilst I could care more, I don't begrudge people who want to get involved. God knows some could do with something to smile about for an afternoon.

(Personally, I just think it's nice to see flags in the hands of people other than football supporters and the EDL).

I'm no royalist, but the big difference is that everyone on the Thames is there because they choose to be there. Slightly different to a parade in North Korea.

I'm watching it because I'm working on coverage of it, because I'm getting paid to watch it. There are a thousand other things I'd rather be doing. I suspect there are a few others on the Thames right now who are in the same boat, pardon the pun.

The fact that anybody chooses to be there "paying their respects" or whatever they think they're doing is what makes me wish I lived somewhere sensible.

There are plenty of things to celebrate about this country but the Royals and the edifice of embedded and unearned privilege that they represent are not one of them.

Nice Jubilee-free day round here. Saw one house with bunting in the garden, but I think that was for Gala week.

Well the pageant wasn't something to be proud of - I went and you couldn't see a thing. The crowds were 20-30 deep and unless you where in the first few rows in was hopeless. I'm 6'2'' and saw nothing - felt sorriest for the kids - they had no chance. Loads of people wandering around like lost souls trying to find somewhere with a good view. I'd estimate 75% of the people there barely saw the royal barge let alone the queen.

And I wonder how many 82 years ago old, proud ladies stood up for the whole time. How long was that 4/5 hours?? Our Queen showed her respect to us by standing up and doing her duty.

Proud to be Great British because of her.

A remarkable lady.

The whole of this thread makes you proud to be British, all sorts of people with a multitude of views and opinions, now that's great as far as I'm concerned. The best thing about today is that we've been to our street party and had a really good time with British, Irish, Malaysian, Itailian all sorts, all enjoying the fact we got out and socialised with people we don't always see because of the busy lives we lead. That's what makes Britain great as well as real ale, pork pie, fish & chips, rain in the summer and all the stuff already mentioned, cheers!

However spelling it with a Q is correct

"The spelling barbeque with - que at the end comes from combining the standard spelling barbecue with the abbreviation Bar-B-Q, and from spelling as you speak. Though listed as an alternative in some dictionaries, barbeque is best avoided." http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_barbeque_and_barbecue

Origin:

mid 17th century: from Spanish barbacoa, perhaps from Arawak barbacoa 'wooden frame on posts'. The original sense was 'wooden framework for sleeping on, or for storing meat or fish to be dried'

Barbecue is often misspelled as barbeque. This form arises understandably from the word’s pronunciation and from the informal abbreviations BBQ and Bar-B-Q. Although almost a quarter of citations in the Oxford English Corpus are for the -que spelling, it is not accepted in standard English. http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/barbecue

Silly boy.

Yes, the only difference is those people on the Thames choose to be subjects, while those in NK are forced to.

You wonder why other 82 year olds can't do what she does? Could it be that they don't have access to the best health care that money can buy? Which incidentally, the health care system that mere mortals use is being further cut, and we have a little jamboree costing millions?

Seriously, what's great about a country that's got it's priorities wrong?

almost no one cares about the jubilee up here as far as I can see.

From BBC Scotland.....

"In Edinburgh's leafy and affluent suburbs, more than 30 parties were taking place over the bank holiday weekend to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee."

"There are the parts of Glasgow, Ayrshire and Lanarkshire where red, white and blue are dyed into the fabric of life and portraits of the Queen hang proudly behind the bars."

"And while Scotland has a reputation as the part of the UK most likely to flirt with republicanism, in recent months royalist sentiment has appeared to be on the rise.
A YouGov poll last week suggested that almost three quarters of people in Scotland supported the monarchy, about the UK average."

Shame really, plenty of people getting together for a drink and a laugh on "my estate" - neighbours getting to know each other better, toddlers playing in the puddles, old'uns reminiscing and telling stories of the "good ole days" to wide eyed face painted kids, plenty of men who should know better doing the drunk uncle dance, front doors left open, all kinds of music mixing together - hmmm, maybe I'd have been better off spending the day whinging on the internet......

...naaaaaah it's jubilee innit, sod the politics and the spelling lessons, pour yourself a large one and hug a neighbour 😀

I was proud of my river today- i have lived along it's banks all my life (at the smelly end- the pageant didnt come this far down. Erith that is 😉 ), i ride along it most weeks, i have been fishing at the posh end of it many times and i have commuted along it lots.
It seemed very apt that it should belt down with rain today, it added to the overall spectacle i think. And what's England without rain when the world is watching!

Next up is the Olympics- great to see the flame do a lap of the TT mountain course without going out!!

Here she is showing the classic British Dunkirk Spirit by saving that special royal smile for her subjects - despite the atrocious British weather.

Uncle Jezza. Much as you hate it, your alternative is President Salmond. And look into his smug, smarmy face and tell me honestly he wouldn't bloody love that!

You don't have to be a royalist (I'm bloody not!) to realise its the least worst option! The alternative is almost too horrific to imagine! President Boris anyone? 😉

Why does there need to be an alternative for the queen, if as we are told by the royalists, her power is theoretical, then the system would remain as is without the theoretical ruler at its head.

If however she actually wields real power, then having that power by a freak of inbred birth has got to be the worst option available in any country that claims to be free.

That's the thing that I can't get my head around.

It is as if a large proportion of the population somehow believe that hereditary nature of the monarchy is somehow better and more virtuous than any alternative....

We don't need a monarch (nothing would happen to the running of the country or the economy, other than short-sighted people possibly flogging their shares, if the monarchy and royalty were disbanded tomorrow). I'd be happy to have a president similar to the Irish model, with the Prime Minister remaining the person who heads the government and 'runs' the country with the cabinet.

I used to be a staunch Royal supporter. But then I got to thinking about just why?

Struggling with my conscience I asked Mrs Slim (a Royal patriot) to tell me exactly why I/we should follow a heriditary titled Germanic family, and just what exactly, for example, made them worthy of such fortunes and adulation?
She gave me some reasons, I defused them with answers as complex as 'but why?'

Eventually, we both drew blanks.

I'm all for tradition and a bit of pomp, and have thoroughly enjoyed the spectacles of the last few days and seeing a bit of pride injected back into blighty. And I'm certain The Queen has a place. I'm just no longer certain where?..

answers on a postcard

With reguards to royalty and all that, Slim has a point. But yesterdays spectacle and the coming of the Olympics has given us all reason to stand up and be proud to be British rather than quietly mention it in conversation as usual.
Ok so im in London and it's all about London really, so maybe others around the country feel different- for me it was all about my corner of the world being shown to everyone else in the world.
We actually do exist, and people on the other side of the world actually would like to come and see us (in a non hostile way for a change) 😉

Thinking about it, the only pro for a monarch is we don't get president blair, but why do we need either?

Anyway who is looking forward to the reign of King Charles? i wonder if that will affect the views of a few royalists, opinion polls don't seem to be very supportive?
