Hi folks. I've been taking the above for a month or so as I've been suffering from work related stress. Starting too feel tired all the time and caffeine intake doesn't seem to help matters. I was told by my gp that it would reduce my 'stress' levels but wasn't ready for the lack of 'get up and go'.. is this normal?

Took it for a while 18 months ago, and stopped for exactly the reasons you describe. Not that it's a miracle cure for everyone, but I honestly found that cycling more was better for my stress levels.

Except when I fall off.

Beta blocker side effects are quite variable person to person but lethargy is a common problem with them. Of course, they're often prescribed for depression (or at least depression / anxiety crossover) which can similarly rob you of your mojo so it might not be the tablets.

Do you think they're helping? As Saxon says, exercise can be pretty effective at reducing anxiety / stress so you don't want to cause a secondary problem. Have a word with your GP if you're thinking of stopping them.

Beta blockers are like a massive rev limiter for your heart - completely incompatible with sport at any real level. They don't even reduce stress, just mask one symptom (elevated heart rate)....

Except snooker where they had to ban beta blockers, presumably because they reduce catecholamine (adrenaline) induced tremor. But yeah, for aerobic capacity they're not great.

Bookmarked for later. Dr put me on propranalol for migraines. Feeling really sleepy when on them, dunno how i'll get on in class next week, let alone cycle.

I've not been on them long (about 3 months) I'm contemplating seeing the gp again as any climbing on the bike and I'm tired way quicker than I should. I've also heard that there really hard to come off.. 😕

Think the dosage gets reduced over weeks to get you off.

Completely normal. BBs destroy your ability to exercise.
They shouldn't be hard to come off, though. Many GPs prescribe them now instead of benzos as they are non-addictive.
See your GP, they might want to put on you an anti-depressant if the stress is still there, if the BBs are getting in the way of cycling.
