Our daughter would like a projector for her bedroom so she can watch Netflix streamed from her phone. However on reading up about them, it seems that Lightening > HDMI cables won't play Netflix due to rights restrictions. Is there a way around this or would I need to buy a Firestick or similar?
Just tried netflix off my iphone on work monitor using Apple's lightning to hdmi cable adaptor, seems to work.
https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MD826ZM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter this is what I use, it is pricey for a dongle though, chromecast will probably be cheaper and more convenient as you can cast netflix to it. Obviously anything apple service won't work.
Best solution is probably to try to pick up a used or refurb Apple TV 4 (K)
Chromecast into a USB port on the projector.
The Chromecast with Google TV is particularly brilliant (and costs just £10 more than that dongle) - no need for the phone at all then.
I'd just use a Roku* stick plugged into the projector - no need for a phone (but you can use one to control the Roku) or a cable.
*or similar - but I prefer these over the Amazon/Google offerings.
Thanks all - we decided to go for a basic Firestick (as we already have one in the household so she'll be familiar with the controls).
Hmmm interested to know that the lightening>hdmi worked when it's not supposed to. I'm trying to achieve the same but in the van with an old iPhone 6 but had assumed it wouldn't work. I was going to pick up a cheap android as there's no limitations on doing it with android but I'll try and borrow an adapter just to see.

The lightning HDMI adapter has worked on Netflix for ages. I think I might have had issues with NOW Tv before.
You might need the proper apple one for the right HDCP coding though - never tried it with a hookey one.
It might be TV-dependent too. Google reckons most TVs with an HDMI port should have HDCP 1.4 at least, though HDCP 2.2 might be required for 4k support.
Golfchick, I have the official Apple cable so that could be it. I seem to remember NOW TV being a duck about it, maybe their no casting rules, but I had to illegally download game of thrones despite trying to pay NOW TV.
We use a lightning to hdmi lead in our caravan. Now TV doesn’t work on it. Amazon and Netflix will play streamed content but not content that has been downloaded to the device.
Fwiw on the netflix over lightning hdmi front, I used to be able to stream from a gen 1 se, not an I pad Air, I now can't from a current se. All using the same cable and tv.
Amazon no go ever on any.
Disney+ about half the time. Sometimes would decide mid steam there was a copyright issue, some times starting the stream then plugging in the cable would "solve" the issue with some things etc.
In summary it's been very hit and miss!
Has anyone found a small / portable projector that is any use? I can think a few circumstances when we would use one but I've always assumed you have to pick two and compromise one out of small/quality/cheap.
I will report back but the one we got was £60 (now £80) on Amazon but got some good reviews and the reviewer pics of it being used seemed to back it up.
