[Closed] Projecting a movie out in the wilds and using a generator

Hello,

Planning to project a film (for a private viewing) onto some rocks out in the wilds.

Need a generator obviously but any advice on how to set up such a thing?

Laptop, projector, generator, LONG cable to keep genny as far away as possible, thinking one big amp for sound - mono ought to suffice.

Thanks!

Depends on the projector but a car battery and an invertor might be enough. Might even be able to source a 12v projector. Either use a spare battery or run it from the car.

If it does need a generator I'd maybe put a filter and surge protector on it to be sure. No reason not to go stereo, it doesn't add much. Buy a drum of mains cable and use that for power and speakers.

Honda quiet generators really are. Hire one, if it's likely to come back in one piece.

Could you use bluetooth headphones for sound? That might make things a little easier. How big is the audience?

If the projector is at all valuable then look for a 'sine wave' generator - they give a smooth clean proper wave form (sine shaped compared to bog standard portable gennies which have a square wave signal) and digital equipment is better behaved with them - even my circular saw won't play with non sine wave generators as it has electronic speed control. Takes a bit of phoning around as not many hire co's stock them (or keep very good tabs on the ones they've got). Aside from being a cleaner supply they're generally quieter too. (If you're anywhere near me - west of scotland - you could hire mine as I bought one after getting fed up chasing down hire ones for projection projects)

Aside from surge protection and sine wave the other consideration of the projector is too expensive to lose is they are very vulnerable to power cuts - the need power to keep cooling after switch off. If a genny cuts out the heat in the bulb can fry they projectors innards (or even just fritzing the bulb will put many projectors beyond economic repair. So you might want a strategy (like a spare generator ready to fire up) if you've got a lot of value / risk tied up in the equipment.

Is it your own film or is the screening on private land?

If not, to be 100% above board you might need a ‘non-theatrical’ film licence. https://www.gov.uk/showing-films-in-public

Depends how 'in public' is defined, e.g. if it's not private land then the public could potentially access the screening.

It's a new one rather than building control I suppose...

How big a screen size are you wanting?

Ha! 🙂 I was just thinking out loud really, sparked by those notices at the start of films, don't play on coaches, oil rigs etc. If you read the page in the link it makes more sense

Have I mentioned building control before, or was that a random comment?

No, but it always makes me smile when someone asks on here for advice on say putting up a new piece of architrave around a door and someone will suggest informing building control 😆

wightyson 😀 😀 😀

What to do is follow the ****s at strathpuffers lead and hire the noisiest piece of shit 2 stroke generator and position it as far away from your own campsite as your cable will allow in the path of least resistance (ie rather than go up the hill just put it right next to your neighbours tent where their van will shelter the noise from you)

that results in conversations along the lines of " please move that " "no - **** off" " do generators run upside down while rolling down the hill , dont you think that would be an interesting experiment to take place in the next 10 minutes" - then move your generator up the hill.....

Seriously hiring a 4 stroke sine wave generator is the best advice on this thread - much quieter , much better output , i couldnt believe how quiet ours way - could run it right outside our camper and barely hear it ! - and that was just a clarke one !

Hey Maccruiskeen - might we take you up on your offer of the generator? Teacake and I are planning something, and we are (or I am) indeed based near Glasgow. I'll fill you in with a bit more detail over email if you're keen, and you can decide if we're trustworthy types 😉
