The company I work for is looking at project management tools, so far MS Project and Celoxis. We're after something that allows distributed teams of people to contribute/update projects etc.

Just wondering if anyone had any experience of similar tools, recommendations etc. Any info really.

Depends on the specific requirements, but for detailed reporting and control at a very granular level, MS Project is good in its various flavours. For softer more collaboration and calendar sharing type tools, things like huddle and base camp work well.

Ah, yes basecamp has come up before, might put that forward as my suggestion. Cheers.

The biggest Project Management Tools I know are the Project Managers themselves.

OpenProj is a free version of MS Project, it works more or less.

TBH I'd use Project or OpenProj to generate a basic initial plan, but then move to something a lot simpler (like Excel) for day-to-day use. Trying to keep an MS Project up-to-date is a nightmare, rather than do any real work you find yourself spending hours trying to move resources, split tasks etc. etc.... If you do decide to go with one of these tools, I'd recommend using them for an overview, planning for the larger modules and not at an individual level.

For a very simple and flexible solution look at Trello.

I know what you mean mogim. I personally wouldn't bother using one, at least not for everyone to access/update. Fine if a proj manager wants to use one as a tracking tool.

Primavera is widely used.
No first hand experience unfortunately but its outputs look broadly similar to Project. Supposedly more powerful so probably useful for the collaboration aspect.

Given you want everyone to access/update the thing, perhaps go with some kind of ticketing tool, Jira for example?

Isn't a project manager someone who thinks that 9 women can give birth to a baby after 1 month? 🙂

As a project manager, no.

In the eyes of my boss, however, YES! 🙄
