It’s some kind of etching primer so they can chrome it. Please.

And what is YouTube recommending me last night? Mr Bean interview with the writer, and then the sketch above. And only one person mentioned Mr Bean! Can't be a coincidence...noticed a similar correlation after commenting on a thread a few weeks ago!

That's giving me flashbacks to the 3 months of evenings and weekends I spent doing a full set of aprilia panels.

was getting worried there for a bit.... glad it's not a union jack roof

even though they made the interesting tedious as **** I think the gordon murray escort anti rust zinc prep is a better process.

I reckon their painter has the only COVID safe workplace in the country - 1 person in the booth, massive fan blowing air in and (sometimes) wearing a mask.

Really cheered me up

Love the combination of traditional colour alongside nutter mental build. Brilliant.

I've only got as far as the first coat of primer. Was this filmed 30 years ago?
Blowing dust off in the booth?
Degreasing with no gloves? Body oil going over the panels.
Heating with a paraffin space heater , that just makes everything damp.
All that hard work on building it and they can't take it to a modern paintshop?

Totally agree with the colour choice, doesn't need a lairy scheme to get noticed. The original shell was white anyway so it's a nice nod to the car's past too. The assembly is going to take ages though, got to be so careful not to chip or scratch the paint now!

What was funny was the YouTube algorithm suggested Ep.1 afterwards, maybe it knows how long it's going to be to the next episode!

Nice to see a BL colour on it.

Not my cup of tea on the roof but I liked the subtle pinstripes.

I'm going for a 2022 finish.

I'm starting to worry that, after all these years of effort, Binky might turn out to be an absolute pig to drive 😬😬😬

I can see that the guys are obviously very capable racing engineers (particularly after the Budget Racement series) but still...

Odds of there NOT being a 20+ episode series on post-test drive Binky fettling? 😂

As a complete ignorant, what was wrong with the paint process? What would a 'better' place have done better?

Not doubting, just interested!

Blowing dust in the booth maximises the chance of debris in the air and in the paint.

And gas heaters generate moisture which can cause blooming

And the oil from your skin can react with paint and micro blister.

Tbf I'm no painter to me the biggest issues the dust.

Loved the episode, wasn’t entirely sure how a painting could go on for 30+minutes & be entertaining, but this Bad obsession, & really it’s silly to be surprised. What a fantastic finish & look!

They've spent 20 minutes on a single bracket before, so 40 mins on painting the entire car is pretty short compared to normal stuff!

As above, projects like this are never really 'finished' but I think this one will be the most finished of all of them.

However, there's still at least 10 episodes left, easy 😀 - there's the interior re trim (2 episodes), the assembly (3 episodes), the suspension set up (1 episode) the engine start and basic tuning/gremlins (1 episode), the road testing/further set up (1 episode), the rolling road tuning (1 episode), and so on.

I'm going for a 2023 finish, to make it 10 years from start to 'completion'.

It does look a bit like baby sick. Wonder if they will go with traditional mini wheels?

They've already banded a set of 5" 13" steel rims to 7" so have the look of 10" steel rims, but bigger. This was back in ep1.

I liked the comment "of course we know it's going to end up wrapped around a tree". Takes a special sort of person to invest all that time in something, get it all perfect and exactly matching the insane image in their head, then take it out and thrash it. I know I couldn't do it.

I've used various different sound deadening products in a few different vehicles and I believe it's a huge waste of time and materials going to the lengths he has in the video. You'd get the same effect by covering a fraction of the panels. It didn't even show him do the roof but I imagine he did as it makes a massive difference.

Still though, satisfying to watch isn't it?

Hopefully next episode is the money shot. I've been watching it since I was living on a camping bed in my parents spare room.

There must be about £10k's worth of dynamat in there, it's not cheap stuff!

The tease of all the running gear/engine for the next episode though...

I thought the same... But then the lengths they went to with everything else, I'm not surprised.

I'm the nicest possible way, I suspect a touch of OCD...

Binky's budget is so high that they used actual dynamat to dynamat it, that's proper decadent. Butyl roof flashing tape for me. And yep, don't think there's any benefit to adding as much as they did but it was nice to watch. (it was funny, my mate was obsessively stripping soundproofing out of his wrx to shave some grams, while I was adding extra weight all over mine with mass loading and foam) Now I want to add a load of gold tape.

Can't believe they didn't rub the fuel tank back! All scratchy.

That XCP rustblocker is horrible stuff, but really satisfying with the squirty hose thing.

Well if you look at Retropower they completely cover every square mm in Dynamat so obviously has some benefit. The thing with metal is it transmits vibration so no good partially covering the panels and stop them from vibrating, but you just then directs the energy into all the bits not covered with Dynamite and other things start vibrating and generating noise like bits of trim which can be the most annoying thing ever. So no point going to all the effort, economising on the Dynamat and having a rattly dashboard. Not something you can install after the fact.

Nice to see the attention to detail, but they're not half stretching it out now. Didn't need to see so much dynamat installation and upholstering. You get the idea what they're doing so a bit of a short section showing them one bit to demonstrate how meticulous they're being then just cut to the finished bit. Not an issue if the next episode is coming next week but if we have to wait another 4 months or so it's just getting a bit too drawn out. Want to see an end to this project now and see them crack on with L'Escargot and any other projects they've got in the planning.

I'm going to guess that as every TV/YTer always uses it, there's probably a sponsorship offering from them.

but they’re not half stretching it out now.

I think when they reached year 7 of this 18 month build I concluded they're enjoying the build more than the though of finishing it, but in their defence I get the impression they put out these 'less sexy' episodes not to drag it out, but because they haven't put out an episode for months.

It's pretty crazy to think that they released an episode called "is the end neigh?" to say that Binky was nearly finished, teasing the next project and introducing Escargot 2 years ago, but Shirley there can't be many more now? Engine and drivetrain next time, what's left? Bolt in the seats and carpet and drive the thing?

I enjoy the series, but it is getting a little silly now. I actually fell asleep watching the dynamat going in. Oh look, another small piece of sticky sound deadening being stuck-on. Oh, another one....

They seem to have built that Citroen C1 race car, modded it & did a whole race series in less time than it takes them to open the tool box for any Binky related vids. 🙂

Was there a video on the heater box piping fabrication to get it behind the dash?

I've watched them all, but they kind of blur into one continuous steam of obsession bordering on lunacy. I don't think it's the sort of thing they'd skip, but maybe they thing everyone's bored of yet more fabrication, or maybe they're bored of pending 4x as long as it takes to do filiming it.

Weirdly, I quite enjoyed that episode - it ended far quicker than I was expecting it to..!

Would be nice if they did crack on with the other projects, though I don't feel as invested in Escargot etc

Definitely. I love watching them work. I don't care if people think they're dragging it out or some episodes seem slow. It's free and I like watching it. I hope to have a fraction of the attention to detail if I ever buy another stinky project car.

Butyl roof flashing tape for me

Same here. I've just done my third van with it. 40 quids worth from Screwfix. The difference is massive even before I've added panels or carpets. I've turned the stereo down a few notches and we can speak in our indoor voices.

Well if you look at Retropower they completely cover every square mm in Dynamat so obviously has some benefit.

Yeah, the RRP is sky high and they can just add it on the invoice for whatever Captain of Industry is having their car built by Retropower them instead of doing it themselves.

Was there a video on the heater box piping fabrication to get it behind the dash?

That was impressive! I also can't remember seeing them make it but I've been watching them in real time since the start so I've no doubt forgotten most of it.

You had better put a few days aside to catch up on the series, there's 17 hours (20 hours with the extras/Q&As/outtakes) of videos to watch 😀

Wouldn't get too far ahead of yourself! They may have said that they hope to have Binky running for a show at the end of August but that could only be a shakedown, lots more to sort before it's OTR. Will need an SVA test for starters!

Plus project cars are NEVER finished, can you imagine what the Bad Obsession boys will be like with a Snags list 🤣

Yep, I enjoyed it too. Good to see Richard Brunning admitting that complex wiring looms are not his thing. Having said that, the new loom looks good. In retrospect it might have been better to start from scratch though.

The ease of which that all went together and tested correctly is a testament to how well they've thought about the whole project. I didn't expect anything less from them really but if all they had to worry about for the first firing was having the timing out 360 degrees then I'd call that a success!
