Bling Binky.

I can't wait to see the colour they go with. I'm going classic red with white roof...

Paint (ok, powdercoat) and assembly of finished parts, who'd have thought we'd ever get here!

Engine for the next 2-3 episodes I reckon...

If anyone wants a needs a fix of engineering madness, check out the Grind Hard Plumbing Co.* on that there youtube. They take power wheels electric kiddy cars and strap very silly engines and space frames to them.

*not a plumbing company.

I am surprised they reused the subframe given the amounts of metal that rusted off it and was in piles on the bench!

Episode 30 of Project Binky is already available for Patrons and it'll be on general release for everyone on Sunday afternoon (UK time)! This is the one where we planned to give the engine a lick of paint, a cam belt and an oil change. Things escalated.....

Time to break out the funk, might actually be red wine as I'm on call next week 🙁

building up a motor is one of lifes pleasures (1275 mini cooper s here well 1400 by the end) punching in the piston with the back of the hand makes a lovely sound

It's always satisfying watching an engine be built properly, almost up there with doing it yourself!

Annoyingly that 35-odd minutes flew by so it's going to be a long wait for episode 31!!

That was a very therapeutic watch (coming from a viewpoint of building competition engines), poor turbo yoda but it all came good in the end thanks to T.E.D.

I suspect they are not being entirely truthful about the purpose of that turbo.   It's lovely to watch an engine being built up like that

I'm guessing it might be an even longer wait until the next episode (or the one after that), presumably they're not doing any build work at the moment.

Good to hear from them.

I have been wondering how Corona willl effect the planned 9-12 month build schedule for Binky.

They are incredibly good-natured, don't know how they manage it.  Some of the jobs removing the old kit would drive you mad.  Strangely good watch really

I think one started up but seeing as the truck will be carrying Binky around it seems best to keep it in here. Place your bets on which is finished first!!

Had a giggle when after watching Richard struggle with that giant piece of wood someone in the comments pointed out that he had in fact found the joints of the separate pieces but they're dovetailed and glued. Got to love an installer who never thinks about how stuff might have to come back out for repairs etc.

Some of us do that sort of stuff for a living and mostly remain cheerful 😉 you just get used to people designing things where maintenance is not high on the design brief.
It does drive you mad sometimes, but you must realise these people often design it right in the first place but then accountants or production planners sully the design in the name of cost saving or ease of production.

A (very high tech) engineering mate is a steam engine enthusiast and has a couple he drives to shows. Among his favourite possessions is the tool set from a WWII tank. I think it might have been a Sherman. It has some seriously big tools but equally stuff that has to work in relatively confined spaces but give a lot of grunt so there are huge ratchets with a billion points of engagement so you're not constantly smacking your knuckles into bulkheads.

By the time you add up all the episodes, the outtake extras and the Escargot side plot you'll need more than a weekend!

How long has it been going and how many extras?

I just watched Episode 29 about the suspension. So wish I had the push kit when I was removing and replacing the bushed in a SE5 Scimitar

As much as I love it, the umpteen captive nuts and brackets are wearing a bit thin. I hope they get it done soon.

Is it something like 6 years and counting?

Yeah well obvs, if it was left to engineers everything would be eleventy squillion pounds more expensive and would take 175 man hours to produce...It's mostly why ze Germans lost ze war y'know....

Check out the "real" Land Rover replacement being developed by Ineos

Start from the beginning

EDIT: And note that most of the engineers are German 🙂

I've been approached by one of the Bad Obsession team, looking to sort a bike to ride with the kids. When I'm back in the shop on Monday I'm going to look into what's available - but basic/mid level hybrids and commuters are in short supply!

Wondered if any biking Binky fans had any parts/bits they might look to throw into the pot for a surprise project build instead?

I'm thinking a 29" hardtail, large/XL. Just get him something a bit nicer, maybe paint it to match what I think Binky will end up. (There's a fair hint in the latest episode, I reckon!)

Any ideas, fire them to me at info@18bikes.co.uk

It’s a 9-12 month build schedule so any day now I guess 😉.

Seriously though you know they’re trolling us yeah? I saw the finished car about 3 years ago having a shake down at Llandow. It was supposed to be a closed session but I was there for work. They’re making £5k a month each from YouTube so instead of releasing episodes once or even twice a week in ‘real time’ they’re dripping them out for the ££££. Why do you think they film in a windowless garage?

Anyway. The MG X Power SV is done now so I guess they’ll trot out the rest of Binky pretty quickly now to start releasing those.

The mad thing is the Es Cargo series is actually ‘real time’.

OK then.

They must have built a time machine too then, because the Q&A video posted on the 30th Jan 2018, with the car in the background, still a shell, had questions that were asked on their facebook page on the 12th feb 2018.

But apparently he car had been finished a year prior to that?

Anyway...

Turbo fitting time!!! Oh, wait...

Plus they may well be brilliant with the spanners but there's no way I'm letting them anywhere near my hair, brave man Mr Brunning!!

Did I miss an episode?

They went from no space under the bonnet to MASSIVE TURBO to episode 32.

Is it still fitting in a mini?

To many Binki spin-offs and out takes to keep track

Please inform me

They always had space under there for a turbo, the original build species one. They mention it in an early episode when getting the engine low enough for clearance under the bonnet then they had a bit of arguement about keeping it N/A for a while.

Then they dropped the bomb of the "Safety Turbo" a few episodes ago. Can't remember which one though but it did cause a stir for a while. It was something to do with power to weight ratio being no better than the Celica was so more power was called for.

Come on Nic keep up

Must admit I initially had the same thought but Turbo fitting was in Episode 31 however there was a How we did it Gearbox rebuild dropped in between Project Binky 31 and 32.

The attention to detail with their fabrication is amazing, throw into the mix having to film it all and then edit it into a video, they deserve some recognition and their own motoring / engineering tv show would be a great reward.
