Firstly you have my sympathies for the bereavement. Its a tough time and reams of paperwork don't make it any easier.

It takes a long time but it's easy enough. We've just gone through it and it's taken about three months and we're just waiting for final sign off.

How complicated it is depends on your estate. In our case it was just cash as the house was in trust so easy enough. If you're methodical, organsied and take the form one question at a time you'll be fine.

You can swear the oath at a local solicitors rather than having to go to a probate office.

Thanks, hopefully it should be straight forward enough.

I've done it - its all doable and I now can't even really remember what was involved. If you're used to doing things like self assessment tax returns and the like then its like doing a few of them - or rather its like when you had to do a tax return for the first time. Much like doing a tax return there seems to be a lot of questions to answer, most of them turn out not to be applicable - its just a matter of satisfying yourself that you've worked out which ones are which.

My mum died in October dad had the final bill from the solicitor yesterday (after a lot of chasing) £2000+, seems they've been kicking it around as long as possible to milk every last penny from her estate. 👿

Sorry for your loss OP. It's a rough time, and it's tempting to just let someone else (solicitor) sort it out for you, but it really isn't that taxing (other than emotionally). Dunno where you stay, but my wife was guided through every step of the process by the clerk at Dundee sheriffs court when it came to sorting her mum's will out. That would be my first port of call*. Cost her about £200 to file the necessary forms, I think maybe a bit less, and the whole thing was done and dusted about 3 weeks later.

*your local sheriffs/magistrates court, not Dundee's. No-one's first port of call should be Dundee.
