I've just done a fresh install of Mojave onto an SSD which I then put into a 2012 Macbook Pro and it's all worked very well.
My sister has now seen the <20 second cold boot time and want me to speed up her 2011 Macbook Pro but she has a load of files that she'll want from the old HD.
So what's my best course of action (the hardware wont run Mojave so it will be staying on High Sierra) assuming the new SSD will be attached via USB for installation purposes.
I think I boot into recovery mode and then install onto the new drive from there, but is that a good method?
Is there a better method that would involve a fresh install and then copying the files over from the old HD?
Or is it fine to simply clone from one drive to the next? If so can I do this from recovery mode or disk utility?
Do the OS then the files from one of her backup copies?
I think you can do it with a time machine backup, but should be loads of guides on the net.
I think I used carbon copy cloner when I did mine rather than TM though.
Put the new drive in and build it then plug the old one in on USB and copy the files over?
Why not just clone the existing drive (using carbon copy cloner, or something of that ilk) to the new drive, then boot from that?
I’ve done that more than once, v simple, or am I missing something?
Don't forget to invoke Trim using the command line once you've got an OS on the SSD but before the files go on.
