My father in law got me one shortly before he died from a horrible debilitating cancer of the oesophagus. He always said I had water between my ears for enjoying mountain biking and fell running so got me a plate with WET on it.
The smile on his face when he saw it on my car is one of my best memories of him which makes me smile.
So yes, they may be vain and a waste of money but mine has a very personal backstory which I’m not going to apologise for.
only driver to threaten to kill me
I'll raise you "threaten" and see your "got out the car and punched me in the face". Car was a Peugeot 406 estate with a normal plate that had not been transferred to the new owner. That's enough evidence for me that all Peugeot drivers should be shot. PUG plate or not.
Mine's not a vanity plate, it's a geeky plate. Just need a new car to put it on!

Yeah, that's the angle I'm looking at.
It doesn't need to spell anything really, it's just a pure novelty.
It's not about a brand, or drumming up business. I'm turning customers away as it is, which I'm very thankful for. Fitting woodburners is the line of work fwiw.
There's an X5 GAV knocks around here, always makes me wonder why you'd drive around with something so corny. He's probably totally oblivious.
Any motorsport fans, TT22 JMG is still there if you fancy taking a punt on McGuinnes winning this summer 🙂

PO22UTE?
Nah, N022 OOT
LE22 OYL ?
B16 0MAR used to drive around Nottingham, apparently that was related to his line of work....(a colleague explained it to me, honest!)
My ex-boss has BI6 PAT. He used to have it on his Porsche 911 soft top. He lost about 7 stone, so changed the plate ....
I've said it before:

🤣
I just don’t get private plates.
I have always been slightly bothered by the fact that mainland British plates reveal the model year of the car by default. I am probably wrong, but I always thought it could lead to a 'keeping up with the Joneses' kind of mentality. As in: 'You may have a Range Rover, but yours is an '08 reg, and mine's an '11'. That sort of thing.
Besides, as someone who used to lean toward the petrolhead side of things, I liked knowing model types, and having to work out the year from minor changes.
In any case, I just bought a used Volvo XC90, and it happened to have come from Northern Ireland originally, so it could be anything from 2002 to 2015, and only the most nerdy can tell. Moral of the story? Buy cars from Northern Ireland!
ASH4 is available from RegTransfers for a completely bargaintastic...£95,000!!
Other regs containing ASH are available.
Any recommendations for sites other than DVLA? I don’t go in for the private reg thing but a random assortment that de-ages the car, might be interesting.
I think the idea suggested above, that you'd be cheaper to get a 'Barry and Tracy' thing above the windscreen or a similar sticker on the back of the car would be a lot cheaper and more effective. What's not to like?
Growing up in the west of Scotland, I was immediately struck when I saw the following plate on Lewis last summer, GF11 FUD - what class!

I’ve just got a private plate – nothing tacky, just mine & the Wife’s initials.
You know that DP has a certain meaning on some websites? 😀
Whimsical ones are harmless enough. There's a plumbers van knocking about Glasgow with a square plate proudly asking...
WH0
5HAT

@idlejon it's a good job that DP aren't my initials them 😁
I have a random selection on retention from a past life when buying and selling vehicles as an extended hobby and taking the plates off before selling...
D55SAW
H1LWX
S400PUD
T6VVW
Never felt inclined to have any put on my current sh#$y old vehicle selection.
But reading this thread it might be a good time to make an effort to sell them!
Any takers?!
I’ll ask again, has anyone purchase from a site that isn’t the DVLA that they would recommend?
From somewhere I previously worked, there is some practicality to them in a fleet, particularly with fuel cards and insurance. Saves you having to update the vehicle list as often and shortening them to 4 or 5 digits makes them easier to remember.
Can't wait to get my old private plate on my new car.....wasn't too bothered until the wife pointed out that the current plate basically spells "nob"

I can't see the point of using anything other than DVLA website. It's the cheapest you'll get. I got my wife's full name when they first released 'F' reg plates back in 2009/2010 direct from DVLA, and my mum got one that spells my surname for my 40th from regtransfers. There was an additional cost with regtransfers, but I guess they've got to make their money somehow.
Maybe they have folk who can track down private owners and ask for a plate you really want vs DVLA where it's either available or not, in which case probably useful but if you're just window shopping then DVLA is cheapest.

One of the greatest I ever saw was on one of those boy racer Rovers with the orange grill (MG ZR? Maybe) which read KN03 HED.
I had one for a month or so, came on a car I bought. Right PITA to get rid of, I felt like a proper tool driving round like that.
Was the number BU22SAW .
Saw SE0 9URU on a Nissan GTR yesterday.
Business must be good.
@cougar - rover with an orange grill? That would’ve been a rover 200 BRM edition.

I've know two girls each with private plates.
K80 GLL (Katy Gill)
And
K80 NMO (Katy Nimmo)
The wife's had ours for years it's just a plate.
I'm disappointed with myself, according to lots of threads I'm a complete knob.

Aye, that looks like what I remember. Ta.

At least you are letting everyone know before they have to see you or talk to you to find that out.
I used to have a Fiesta with a reg that ended CNT
It was only when I registered it to park at work that the security guard pointed out the obvious to me.
I find the ‘you can’t tell the age of the car’ argument amusing. Who cares?

Certain work places for a start. Nope, me neither.
Cheaper to buy a dateless reg once than a car every 3-5 years.

Saves time I suppose. Maybe instead of beside the name on this forum it should state level of knob then I wouldn't need to read your posts to find out.
I'm generally of the view that private plates are just a bit lame. But there are two local ones that I quite like - this:

belongs to the guy who runs the raptor display at our local castle
and this:

belongs to a plumber, who is a keen cyclist - or was until the pandemic meant he was too busy working.
The few people I know who indulge in such things always get a bit grumpy when I refer to them as 'vanity plates'...
But the one I really don't get is why someone would have a vanity plate based on their name but then have full-tint windows. Either you want people to know who you are or you don't?
Guy round the cirner from us runs a s****y burger place.
His reg is TH15 COW.
Loads of places are cheaper than DVLA. Just get googling.
There was an SUV at work for a while, with a personal plate, N?? KKK.
I’m really not sure I’d want to be seen with that on my car, especially in some neighbourhoods…
I’ll ask again, has anyone purchase from a site that isn’t the DVLA that they would recommend?
This would be step too far for me. You're going beyond saying " I'm the sort of person who would spend money on such a daft thing " to " I'm the sort of person who is content to support an industry of leeches whose only purpose is to exploit people as vain and gullible as me"
WE11 JEL, to annoy the povs still using council plates?
Either you want people to know who you are or you don’t?

Arrogance or self awareness?
I've bought a new(to me) car with the standard number plate 'S ### KVH'.
K and H happen to be the initials of my name. I have a private plate on retention but it's cheaper to give myself a middle name via deed poll for £42 than to transfer my retention plate.
Victor?
Vladimir?
Vaughn?
What would STW do?

Vain? 😃

Vlodomir. Show support.
Valéry, it means courageous.
Just the letter V.
It is on a Volvo so I could just use that as my middle name

Will make you seem like some kind of count.
Much like a personalised plate does.
