Folks

I was in a shop a couple of days ago and really liked a tune they had on. The chap behind the counter told me who, and it was an indie band from Manchester I think. he said it was from the same time as The Charlatans, and I got into a conversation saying I saw them live a few times.

Anyway, I had not heard of this band, it wasnt anyone as big as Stone Roses or Happy Mondays. They only had 2 albums, and their name was a single word, a simple everyday word I am sure beginning with S. Something like Sound. But I am not too sure, and I can't really google sound as it is too common a word.

The tune had a lot of violin in it, and was quite ravey.

Can any back-in-the-day people help with this? It is a bit obscure sorry!

it would have been late 80's not 90s surely? Madchester was over by the beginning of the 90s..

errr.... and you're ringing a little bell of recognition in my head somewhere... Unfortunately.. I was a bit too 'mad for it' around that time and have big chunks of swirling incomprehension and memory loss regarding that whole era..

If I get a flashback I'll let you know..

Not Puressence was it ? Bassist Kevin and his mates used to plaster their name on every road and rail bridge.

Do you maybe mean 'Soft' - Garvey's original name for Elbow was 'Mr.Soft' when we were at college, then they shortened it to 'Soft', then finally Elbow ?

Madchester? Shack?

Shack are THE most scouse band in the history of music. This is utter genius though. One of all time favourite tunes

Its not the House of Love you're thinking of is it?

Listened to She's A Rainbow by World of Twist this morning on the way to work. Fantastic.

You are all wrong though. The answer is Paris Angels and the track was Perfume.

Do I win a prize?

Right sorry folks, I did of course mean late 80s!

I think Source sounds like the closest. I know obviously you had "The Source" but this band had just a single word name. Can anyone tell me any of the Source's albums so I can have a look on Youtube? It's impossible to search just using that single name.

This was a band I had never heard of, but thanks for all the suggestions. Really appreciate the help.

...or Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerald.

...or Creeping To The Cross by That Petrol Emotion. But maybe not as they were from the 80s and were not from Manchester. Worth a listen anyway.

Not in a bromance kind of way I hasten to add! 😯

That would have been at The Brickhouse.

There are only 3 certainties:

"...or Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerald." Classic...but not exactly in the "madchester" Roses, Charlatans vein.

On a night out at The Brickhouse it was a nurse, taxis and a difficult trip home from the wrong side of town on Sunday mornning. No death.

Way off topic... but I remember when you had to walk back from Marsden after a night of disappointment with a girl who had a head that looked like an orange.

I still smile about that 20 years later. 🙂

I thought World of Twist or the High - then somebody said Paris Angels and I now reckon it's them he means.

It's probably not Flowered Up, but I thought I'd mention them anyway while we're getting all nostalgic.

I saw Gaye Bikers once.

There were more people on stage than in the audience... and there were only 4 of them on stage.

World of Twist get a mention in St Etienne's London Belongs to Me actually.

Been listening to their second LP So Tough a lot lately and it's a forgotten masterpiece.

Ah, memories.

So Tough is a great album!

Simon. I am absolutely sure it wasn't the Skol Bandaleros, but if anyone else on here remembers them I will glow with happiness all weekend.

Ha you are showing your age, would it be the Ritz or the Venue that I saw them? It's all so long ago and a bit fuzzy now. You may glow.

I reckon it sounds like it was probably one of the later mixes of You Got the Love by The Source and Candi Staton. I'm sure one of the crapper remixes featured loads of violins and stuff

Don't just rely on youtube, mate.

Try a dedicated music site, where the context is certain, like last.fm, or that other one.......Spotify.

Happy hunting.

Mt

Yeah - I used to go to the Ritz on a Tuesday for student night. I saw the chalatans first at the Poly when their first single came out, and then at Rock City.

I also used to go to Kool Kat raving, and then Bounce at various clubs. I also ran some raves called Whooosh at the Uni where I was on the student social committee.

As for the tune I am seeking, it wasnt background violins, but the violin seemed to be being used almost like a lead guitar. It was an instrumental track, a little moody almost and I was surprised to hear the age as it sounded quite modern.

Oh yes Tuesday night at the Ritz. It was suposed to be student night but as I recall it was full of gits like me and loads of sixth formers getting depressed on The Cure.

De Villes on a Saturday night anyone?

Monday at the Ritz was a good one too. Mashed out of your face on £1 Pils and flattened by a Psycho-Billy to the theme from 633 Squadron.

633 Squadron was the last tune at my wedding. We all ran round the dance floor!

Has the OP been resolved yet? Can't quite work out if yes or no!

If not my proposition is "Sandkings" who were more black country than Madchester but hey. Their album "Welcome to England" always seemed to be fairly overlooked (ie. good) but then the singer went on to do the Babylon Zoo thing didn't he...?

Hmm, memories.........

Monday - The Ritz with Dave Gannon.

Tuesday - The Banshee for cheap Vodka night, or if trying to pull students 5th Ave, 42nd Street (Then known as The Playpen?), Berlin or DeVilles.

Wednesday - see Tuesday.

Thursday - Banshee, then Jilly's, get hand stamped then flit between them.

Friday - See Thursday. Also the Hacienda, or if got knocked back, Berlin, The Venue or (later)the Brickhouse. Possibly Band on The Wall for Reggae night - Red Stripe, DJ Lorraine, free weed and the delightful Horace on the door. The Conti for Nurses.

Saturday. The Banshee or Jilly's if with mates - The Hacienda if with a dressy up kind of girl, Band on the Wall, the Gallery or The Boardwalk if she was a scruff like you.

Sunday - That club at the top of the escalators at the Royal Northern
College of Music - anyone remember it's name?

That's why I now have the body of a 60 year old. 😀

As for the OP, my money's on Shack.

The Conti!

How the hell did that place get a fire safety certificate?

Nobody has so far mentioned the king of Manchester night spots... The Granby!

The Granby! (shudders).

Nasty, nasty little pub. Always used to be full of Neanderthal City Fans - lovely undercurrent of violence on a Saturday Night, but handy for the delightful Kebab 'Shop' over the road - which like Mr Ben's outfitters only ever appeared at the weekend.

I preferred thew Granby to the Conti any day! That kebab shop sold pink chilly sauce which always seemed to seep out and coat my clothes like napalm.

I still think it's Yargo.

Maybe the tune was [url=

- Sound?

Or may have been 'The Beloved'- they were quite a ravey indie band of the time.

So many good memories... Joe Bloggs flares, Acid tops, Reni hats, Kickers, Hacienda, Boardwalk, Konspiracy, Ritzy, Raves, Floppy fringed hair cuts and of course all the bands doing it for themselves! 😀
