I have been planning for some time to build a BBQ out of brick in my back garden to replace the two conventional ones that completed corroded away. My idea - which I had never seen before - was to build a brick housing with a grill in it, with a mount for the burner and regulator beneath, together with a brick housing for the propane tank beside it.

Now, I discover that you can already get such things pre-fabricated - only for charcoal as opposed to gas.

Does anyone have a BBQ like this? How feasible do you think it would be to purchase, assemble, then convert to gas? Is there any reason you know of that would mean it would not work?

It's not really pre-fabricated though is it?

You don't get the brick built bits of it, just the metal trays and rods etc.

Is leaving the gas gubbins permanently exposed outside a good idea? I would have though it would corrode quite quickly so you'd probably have to replace the final pipework and burner every year or two.

Good point. I was also thinking through some sort of canopy/cover, but hadn't got as far in my planning as actually consider what it would look. My brother's an architect, though, so he tends to remember important little details. 🙂

My parents have had a BBQ outside for 16 years with no maintenance. It's a wooden frames gas one. We use it every year and it's been faultless. The wood is looking a bit worse for wear but the metal components are working fine. We just put a cover on it when we're done.
