We've booked a weekend in February in Prague and I'm after some recommendations. Mrs YoK likes museums and East European stuff, I'm happy wandering and taking pics. And food recommendations also appreciated. And any tourist traps to avoid or hidden gems to see.
Someone else asked the same a few months ago. Here's my response then, it all still stands true. It's a lovely city.
We were there a couple of years ago for a long weekend. Walking tour (free with our taxi ride from the airport) was a great way to get to know the highlights, we then spent the next few days going back to some of them and exploring the city. Jewish holocaust "museum" is well worth a visit, very humbling and moving.
Go up the clock tower in town and be sure to be there when it strikes,
We had dinner here one night and it was fabulous, the seven course tasting menu with matching wines, we still talk about it
Try the soup that's served in a loaf of bread, it's remarkably nice
Lovely wee coffee shop called coffee lovers - coffee
Enjoy! Beer is cheaper than water there,,,

Darlings.
Where are you staying?
We stayed a mile out in June, and found it was great. I had my doubts, I wanted to be in the centre, but she booked it. The further out, the cheaper the food/drink is. We stayed in the Charles/Karlin district. Loads of bars/cafes/pubs at reasonable prices, typically £25 for 2 drinks and dinner (with enormous portions).
In the centre, you'll pay £50+ for something that is mass produced with little character/taste.
What to see, it was our 3rd visit in 10 years. There's still stuff to see each time. Do the usual things, the clock, Charles bridge, Castle grounds (changing of the guard at 12 noon every day iirc), just walk around the centre and see the sights. There is a great arcade just off Wencelas Square, on the right hand side, going up the hill. Some good stuff in there - the upside down horse. A cafe toward the top of Wencelas square that serves your drinks via a model railway (ok, I like railways!).
If they are playing when you are there, a band called the Brownies were really good. Municipal House for tea/coffee/cake in the afternoon. If you can afford it, the restaurant in the same building is brilliant, but expensive £70 for 2, albeit in one of the best buildings in Prague.
Try the local food, at small local pubs/cafes. We made the mistake on the first night of buying dinner in a cafe opposite the clock, It was rubbish and expensive. Have a drink there, just to be sat down watching the clock, but plan your big meal to be a mile away to get local good quality food. Language - we never had a problem really, in the centre, many speak good english, outside of town in local pubs, our phrase book came in handy to translate the menu. All of the staff were very helpful when we ordered by pointing/trying to pronounce the menu.
Learn hello/goodbye/please and thankyou, along with 1 to 5, and you will get by easily.
Go to Marysokovo Station to get a cake from the small bakers there. It is great.15p for a cream cake, which are far better than what we get here.
Darlings.
+1
The castle and the views of the river from the castle. Gorky park and the observatory. There is a funicular there too.
Other than that as wander around the streets is nice. Just wander and get lost, you'll stumble across many nice little hidden squares and bars!
Food is not that great. It's all hearty, rustic and heavy stew and dumplings type of stuff. Which is nice, but pretty heavy. I'm sure now there are many 'international' restaurants that are as good as any you'll find in any other big town or city in the world.
The beer is the best thing out there. It is nothing like the Pilsner Urquel/Budwieser Budvar/Staropromen/Kruisovice that you'll get in the UK - which is mostly brewed locally under license and be nothing like the real stuff despite saying 'imported' on the bottle. I enjoyed sauntering around the place, stopping off for the odd beer and enjoying the sights of the city. It's a really pretty place.
See a hockey game.
Don't eat in the square walk over the bridge, prices used to be a lot cheaper.

That would be me...

This. Went on bigGs recommendation, MrsTHtobe was so impressed with it, she agreed to marry me there.
Take good walking footwear. walking on cobbles all the time takes its toll.
Go up to the castle, have a wander round, try to time it with he changing of the guard.
The torture museum is interesting, if somewhat gruesome.
The sex machine museum isn't as fun as you might think, its more like a museum of medical implements, and just as fun...
Another +1 for the astronomical clock.
Excellent stuff. We are staying in a hotel called Motel One which is near the train station by the look of things.
Right, you are close by to Marysokovo station. Sorted for baked goods and cakes! The road the hotel is on, if you walk away from town for 10 minutes, there are a lot of bars/pubs in the area of Karlin Square. One pub, U Sani was excellent for its food. Starters are the size of main course. My OH had an ham hock. It was more like a full ham. There is a small bar, over the road, a little further up that was excellent too, the size of a front room, excellent beer, and spirits. Make sure you try at least one Absinth. It's potent.

Rick Stein stayed in one of these in Vienna for the last series €80 per night for a room on the Opern Ring (I think it was). It's on our tick list for this year so will bookmark this for future reference.
I don't thinks its close to you be we had a lovely meal here after it was recommended by a client
I went there for my stagdo and yes darlings was frequented. The thing I had never known beforehand is that they're all whores, not just strippers.
Anyway, my recommendation is to check out some live Jazz. I researched for a suitable venue before we went and it was the highlight of the trip, apart from getting accosted in Darlings.
A few years ago we spent a few happy evenings in the Hemingway bar, great cocktails and the presentation was amazing. Helped by being opposite our hotel. It also had a rule of no standing which kept it quiet.
Have a huge sausage from a street vendor. They all look freshly cooked, but I save it for the last day just in case.
I’d suggest a boat trip but it maybe a tad nippy in February
