I've used powerline of varying brands for about 5 yrs now. After a number of wireless adaptor powerline slaves fried themselves from cheaper brands I switched to BT Hotspots. They seemed more stable, if not particularly fast, and I've not had too many problems save for a few drop outs.
Came back from Hols and laptop in kitchen (connected to internet via WAN/Powerline/BT Router) seemed slower than normal, especially as Id just moved to fibre BB.
Initially I checked speed using the BT test site, of course that was silly as it tested only to the router, not to the network card in the laptop and claimed all was well with the world. So I ran speedtest in the office next to the computer:
21.9Mb. Not bad.

Then I ran speedtest from the kitchen laptop
1.3Mb. Blimey, something not right

I knew not to put the powerline master plug into an extension lead, so I had it in one side of a two-gang socket in the office. With PC and various peripherals run off the other side of the two-gang over an extension lead.
I moved the powerline master to another socket on the other side of the office. For form factor reasons I had to use a short extension lead, but it was still the only device connected to the two-gang. Back downstairs and test the laptop in the kitchen again...
5.36Mb. Better, but not great

So what if I run a patch cable over the office balcony and downstairs to an empty two-gang on a different power spur to the office, and test again?
22.1Mb. Ah. That would appear to have fixed it.

TL:DR If you are using a powerline try and locate the master in a socket as far away from any electrical supply interference as possible. Not just off extension leads, but also away from sharing two-gang sockets or even better on lower-use supply rings/spurs.
Let the high speed grot return.
So what if I run a patch cable over the office balcony
Do you mean a [power] extension cable? If not I'm [easily] confused 😳
Edit: Oh wait..... got it (I thought you were wireless to the powerline but you're not). 🙂
(I'm still on my first coffee so still buffering)
no I mean a "Cat 5"/RJ45/Network* cable from the router int he office to the master powerline plug in the room below. Sorry, didnt make that v clear.
* whatever theyre really called.
Yes Powerline master plug is always cable connected to the router.
Wait...... right... got it. (you are wireless from the laptop!)
Cool, interesting. I use a 3 x d-link powerline adapters in another house to connect raspberry pi's to the network.
Very occasionally one of them will 'crash' and bring the network to a halt (either that or the HH5 needs rebooting), which is very annoying when I'm 110 miles away 🙁
Im wireless in the kitchen, but that's is relatively immaterial to this experiment. The speed fromt he wireless adaptor to the laptop is not the limiting factor. Its the drop in speed from the powerline master to the powerline slave (wireless adaptor) over the power cables from massive interference that was the problem.
So the 3d pr0n in the kitchen is a no-go ?
only while Im shallow frying. But apart from that I'm good to go with the HD hentai.
Good timing, as I've just ordered a power line set for collection later.
So, should I aim to have the 'master power line' as far away from router and anything else as possible?
Cheers
Chris
only while Im shallow frying.
Fat spatter could be a big issue there - stay safe out there 🙂
I'd exercise caution. Shallow frying is risky when you're not wearing pants.
Er, I expect.
not necc "as far away from router", but if you have an office with 2x monitors, PC, a printer, router power supply etc all coming off one socket you may want to try a different socket in the room. Network speed want degrade substantially over quite long network cable distances. Its usually just the cable routing/aesthetics that are the hassle.

Probably doesn't hang below the t-shirt anyway.
But otherwise, cool story. My Monday was turning out a bit dull.
