Been having issues with intermittent internet recently so tonight got round to doing some digging. Logged into router and see next doors devices all connected to our network. Hit refresh and then I'm seeing their router login (we're Virgin, they're Sky). Seems there's some cross over from the power line adapters. Now I've turned ours off, all is good.
Given we are in detached houses, why would there be cross-over for power line adapters? Should it not be isolated to my ring main? These aren't wifi adapters.
Sounds like you are all connected and probably paying for their electricity.
Makes no sense.
I did once live in an old victorian house, and a builder behind us has power and hot water that was connected to us (without us knowing). His yard was originally part of our house years ago.
Are you sure you don't have guest wifi enabled that people are connecting to? The kids opposite sometimes jump onto ours when it's turned on.
Can you repeat it? Turn the powerline back on, do you see the connections again? If so have a chat with the neighbour.
Interesting...did a bit of googling, some of the results suggest powerline might work between properties if you are on the same drop/phase?
Definitely not guest wi-fi. Admin screen splits wi-fi and ethernet connections and they were all connected on ethernet. Can def re-create.
Yes, there is no reason why they shouldn't. There seems to be an assumption that the signal will be blocked by the meter but it isn't guaranteed. Your neighbour might well see your devices unless there is some way of turning on encryption on them. Do you have a manual for them?
Mine are TP Link TL-PA8010P. I'll check what the neighbours have. Hadn't played much with the settings but looks like might a utility to tweak some settings. Never had to check it out before; neighbours only moved in a few weeks ago.
Guess your neighbour has got a powerline then that's connected to yours instead of the other one of his. He's prob sat there wondering why his powerline has stopped working. An opportunity here to half both your internet costs?
Haven't used powerline for a while, but from memory out the box they'll just connect, but for security recommended to pair them?
In the config tool, change the powerline network name and most importantly the network password (I suspect they’re all the same from the factory). Then go to the config web page (hosted by the end point repeater) and re-pair it with the new password.
Theoretically powerline could extend your network right back to at least the substation, if not further. Good kit, but the default settings are dubious.
Quick update-utility did show TP-Link adapters from both houses, on default configuration. I've isolated ours now onto their own network and all good.
Yup, powerline addapters will work right back to the transformer in theory, although in reality the signal wont travel very far as its not a shielded or twisted pair cable.
Use the app and isolate/name them etc.
Powerlines can work outside of your house.
