Any recommendations, whenever I do any work I end up with the choice of eye wear or a mask, wearing both equals steamed up glasses and risks loss of fingers when grinding etc... so I’ve stumbled across powered respirators. Do they work for those of us who steam up all the time?
Something like this?

Yes, used to use something similar in the paint booth at work. The air flow keeps the mask clear.
Its a little bit of a toss up whether you want the weight of the power pack etc on your head or on a belt round your waist.
The one linked to it could get tiring for longer periods and a belt type one would be more comfortable. But the belt ones are a bit more of a wrestle to get on and off which leads to a temptation not the wear them if you are doing something a bit stop start.
The belt ones have the advantage of surprising you by sucking up a fart and blowing it straight in your face. Which is funny once.
I end up with the choice of eye wear or a mask,
A visor rather than glasses / goggles can work better than goggles - especially if the mask vents downwards rather than at the front.
Masks can make it difficult to find a comparable pair of glasses that sit properly without being pushed up by the top of the mask - but if the glasses are steaming up the problem is the mask doesn't fit you properly
I had the Axminster you've linked to a couple of years ago but it was revealed on a woodturning group that Axminster were exaggerating its dust ingress protection and several of us managed to get refunds, in my case only throught raising a PayPal dispute.
I replaced it with the 3M Versaflo system which besides offering much better protection and dust ingress rating takes the weight on your hips and is far less tiring. Whilst expensive at RRP I picked up mine as separate parts on eBay for £400. So comfortable I've tried to scratch my nose or raise a mug of tea whilst wearing it.
Trend also do one.
Househusband, have you got a link to the forum regarding the dust ingress claim? My dad has that mask and thinks it is so much better than the bulky trend one he had before it.
But if it isn’t giving the protection required, that’s another matter!
I tried the axminster one on a couple of weeks ago, I was quite disappointed by the quality. It all felt very cheap indeed. It also didn't seem to seal that well.
It was actually a private Facebook group for woodturners, not an open forum - sorry! I can see later if I can perhaps find the PayPal dispute and give you the technicalities.
We use the 3M Versaflow mentioned above at work. It's used for Cat IV disease protection, so I hope it's OK. Either way, it's very comfortable for long journeys in the back of an ambulance and MUCH more comfortable than the FFP3 we used to wear.
Not cheap are they, I was think £200 was a stretch for an occasional DIY user 🙁
I'm boarding out the loft at the moment and thought the axminster one would do the job
The non-powered full face mask/respirator I have (3M 6900) doesn't steam up. There is a seal around the shield, and a separate seal around your nose and mouth (and a one-way valve between the two parts). The filters are in the shield, so when you breathe in, the air is pulled across your face then into the lower part, and when you breathe out, it goes straight out the bottom. Expensive compared to simple mask and goggles but cheaper than a powered respirator (less than £60 on ebay for the mask and a pair of filters).
I've used it for boarding lofts and it's certainly a lot better than not wearing it. If I was woodturning all day though then a powered one would definitely be on the shopping list.
It’s used for Cat IV disease protection
Theres only one Cat Disease this forum is concerned about and really you should be wearing a condom if you're trying not to catch that
🙂
