Does hosting an image allow someone viewing it to see where it was taken?

Maybe.
Depends if your host site of choice includes location data in the EXIF info I think.

Plenty of tools to remove that EXIF data, if your unhappy sharing the location

Thanks. So this one, for example (which I'm not worried about): is it postimg or the forum I'm posting it to (not STW) that would chose to include the exif data or not?

Hmm, just downloaded it from that link and opening it and clicking on details shows exactly where it was taken.

OK, recommend me a website and talk me through it please.

Further edit: sorted. Used https://imagy.app/remove-exif-data/ Dead easy.

On an iPhone, flick the photo up and for location click Adjust, then edit the location to No Location.

That’s obviously photo by photo but you can tell the camera app to not add location data.

No idea if image hosting sites generally do it don’t preserve that data.

Google photos on Pixel7 says 'Can't edit photos added by your camera'. Might need to adjust my backup settings.

This.

Typically social media sites like Facebook strip EXIF data. Typically true photo hosting sites like Flikr do not. If in doubt, don't post it or pre-process it yourself first.

I use IMGBB and mine include EXIF but without the location. Tbh I’m not sure if it’s my phone that doesn’t upload it or the website removes it. There is an option in the account settings to not save EXIF data though.

That second canal shot is either on way to the tunnel at Hallglen or after the bings at Philpstoun...I think.

Edit, pretty sure it is near Hallglen...east of the tunnel...maybe just 150 yards from it.

Philpstoun is correct. Ten points. But you didn't get that from the metadata, right?

No I didn't...I rode that a few weeks ago (and about 20 years before that)...
I tend to set my phone to not include location details...just in case I do share a picture then I'm happier not giving anything away.

Yeah, trying to figure out if it's useful to have it switched on or not. This has been helpful. I think I will, but keep in mind that it can be removed if sensitive.

The old STW classifieds section (replaced a few months ago) used to include EXIF location data on uploaded photos.
