My other half has got an interview for a job this week up in Yorkshire (Skipton)and it looks like she could be in with a good chance of getting it. I've always lived in south London so it's a little bit scary but i'm very excited at the prospect and the huge potential benefits it will bring to our family.
I guess my question is, "where should we look at living?"
Will need to consider schools for the kids (primary and secondary) and commuting in to Skipton a couple of times a week although the job is one where she'll be travelling around a bit.
We'll be renting initially whilst we continue to save a deposit. Rent upto £900 for a 3/4 bed house.
Her new salary would be the same as what we both earn down south so I wouldn't need to work for a while and would then be part time so work location for me isn't really an issue.
Somewhere that is good for cycling obviously and walking. We both drive so it doesn't matter about driving to the shops but it would be nice to live somewhere with a decent local pub and a "community" feel.

Made this move 6 months ago.

We settled on Ilkley, decision mainly driven by the transport link to Leeds and beyond (we still travel to London by rail and air a fair bit), all primary schools are exellent and access to the moor and dales. I'd happily live in Skipton or beyond though, but it was harder for us to find property that would guarantee access to excellent schools.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with many, many places around Skipton 🙂

There FTFY

Its absolutely rubbish in or around Skipton there's no Mountain biking or any quiet roads for road cycling.

Right thats my bit said I'm popping on the bike over to Addingham for a TT.

The north right now. Sunny, great beer, and I'm enjoying with no other sod in sight.

Lovely.

A bit random I know, but how about Skipton?
At least for your first rental - then get used to the area.

Ermysteds and the Girls High are all you need for schools.

Anywhere between Gargrave road and Grassington Road to live.

(obviously there are plenty of lovely places around, but I thought I'd throw that one in)

Also you will reap the lifestyle benefits, but you will miss the weather! We also miss some of the things that our London suburb was really good at, particularly having loads of parks with kids playgrounds within walking distance.

Skipton is OK as are all the surrounding villages

Dales good riding. and easy traveling to. Lakes , North Yorks moors and numerous other good riding spots.

lots of folks move into Skipton to get their kids in at the High School and grammar school.and most villages have good Primary schools.
£900 will get a hell of a house up here .

Dont be scared we dont bite much

Up here we have this thing called 'the outdoors'. It's all the playground you could ever need. (only teasing).

North Yokshire will be full of schools that parents in London would sell a kidney to get into. Actually almost of all of them are that good

I'd get on rightmove and start searching to see what the rent will get

I take it's at the only big paying employer in town then? My wife works there too...

I wouldn't look any further east or south than Skipton, and for a complete change of pace, you could afford to live in the south Dales villages.

I've lived here for six years now, think it's a fantastic place, with good schools, shops and more importantly, riding and walking pretty much on your doorstep. It's a friendly town, and cheaper to live in than Ilkley, which, TBH, would be the pretty much the only other candidate town (maybe Otley, but that's pushing it.)

If you need any info, you're welcome to PM me.

I moved from Islington to the rural countryside of the Ribble Valley, Lancs.

Beautiful area!

Is that Embsay crag? I rode up there a long time ago, there wasn't much that wasn't cheeky... or at least I didn't find it.

Yes Embsay Crag, getting a bit worn in places now all the bloody southerns have moved up and started riding it.

Keighley isnt renowned for an influx of southerners athough the area under the dales and especially Ilkley is... local primary school told us we might not get in due to this... we didnt...

All the nice bits of the north* are full of smug people who've sold up their tiny houses in London for half a million quid, and are living like kings and pushing the prices up for everyone else - what can you do?

(Apart from shoot them all perhaps? 😛 )

* NB - Keighley is not included in this

I live in Harrogate and work in Skipton. Both great places to live and work. I cycle in once a week in the nicer weather.

Loads of riding everywhere.

You absolute sod.
Skipton is the place I'd most like to live in. If my wife had been able to find a job in the area when I was working in Leeds, I'd have moved like a shot.
It's a real town, close enough to cities for high culture, very close to wonderful countryside. In fact, fancy a wife-swap so i can move instead?

I laughed at one comment:

We also miss some of the things that our London suburb was really good at, particularly having loads of parks with kids playgrounds within walking distance.

All of Skipton is within walking distance if you can find a house there - and some are wonderful. If she gets the job, go for it. Your kids will thank you for the rest of their lives.

If she is interviewing with the main Skipton employer and travelling around a bit, then my pal might be working for the same employer and doing a similar job (financial services?), probably not tho. If so, I could put her in touch.
As said, Skipton area is as good as anywhere locally for living, schools etc. Harrogate area, Ilkley (or anywhere in the Wharfe Valley) are on the same level or better. Bingley, the next level down (both main schools are top 5 in West Yorks). All these areas have good doorstep riding (especially Bingley) and all have great riding options within a reasonably short drive.

Word of warning there is another 150 odd miles of the north to go from the southern border towns 😉

Best invest in a good coffee machine and a phrase book. Also try not to say "It's all so cheap" too much, it's the right price London is expensive. The weather can be awful but the right clothing will sort that out. Find a house with good heating and that should sort you out, there is also no need to go and buy a 4x4 cause we is moving to the country....

Only downside for you might be the pace of life and lack of high culture stuff, perhaps?. About as exciting as it gets is the sheep festival and canal festival. Skipton is a farming town (also a tourist destination), but you already probably expect that.

no, I wouldn't either 😉

but anywhere else within 5-10* miles of Keighley, yeah

* like Baildon. wouldn't swap it for anywhere else in the world. 'cept maybe Vancouver

i would nt return to ilkley for all the tea in harrogate.. and should be avoided by anyone under 65.. skipton has it beat hands down.. harrogate is a fair choice but if you can afford 900 pcm you can rent anything available in skipton .. no reason to go anywhere else..

There is a bit of 'high' culture around. Skipton Music Festival, the wonders of the Mart Theatre, the Grassington Festival just up the road, classical concerts in Christ Church, the occasional rock festival (which normally gets rained off..)

This is an example of local highbrow stuff...

Thank you for all the replies. Her interview was today and she said it went well but was very tough. Apparently, she was a "wildcard" choice for interview as this post is a couple of grades above her current role. I'm not as positive now!
Maybe I was a bit impulsive to post in the first place but i'm very excited with the prospect of moving!

Fingers crossed........ 😀
