I'm planning a solo cycle trip to France in September and trying to keep costs down where possible, travelling by ferry, probably overnight 10th September, returning 2 weeks later.

Does anybody on here live in or near Portsmouth, or have themselves done something similar, and know of cheap, preferably free, parking that'll be safe for that length of time?

I don't mind a short ride from parking to the port, max 10 miles.

Maybe you have a driveway with space that I could use for a small amount, or on-street parking outside your house?

I've checked JustPark and some other sites but most parking starts at £4 a day or so or isn't available for that period.

The train doesn't seem to be an option based on cost and having the added faff of a change in London.

Any suggestions welcome, ta.

It's pretty safe round my way. A little under 10 mile North. Welcome to park behind my house in a layby. Pm me for details

We had a very similar thread a few months ago.

I am further away (17 miles) but there is a cheap local train service (£17 return). If offer above doesn't work out let me know, or if you don't mind me driving your car third party I could possibly come with to drop you off then drive car back to mine - my car is too small to take you and your bike.

2 problems with that - and the second is he's "trying to keep costs down"! 🙂

What an offer from Jambalaya, drop you at the ferry door and keep your car safe while you're away. Outstanding!
& Op, 2 weeks solo cycling in France, we'll need a report back please with plenty of pics. 😀 Ta

You've got me worried now - we're staying at the Portsmouth budget Ibis for a night before we catch the ferry, am I going to wake up to find the car gone!? Do I need to be taking all our luggage into the hotel? 😕

You think you're safe inside the hotel?

We'll be safe if we huddle together and sleep on the bags, right? 😉

Like the prejudice 😆

It's definitely whatever you think the area will be, and worse 🙄

Just don't park it in Lea Park, or near too. A lot of residential streets in Pompy are resident permits only, small terrace streets and parked cars either side. It'll be difficult to park in the city so your only options are outside. Porchester, even Fareham, Gosports even possible (ferry over to Pompy) Bedhampton or Havant, Langstone even. All within riding distance 15mins ish to the ferry terminal if you get a wiggle on.

Simple rules apply, find a nice street in a nice quiet area and don't block anyone in.

What are you driving? A Lamborghini? And even if, it'll be as safe here as anywhere where you live.

Another option is the council car park opposite the hoverport in Southsea. I used to park a car there when working on the mainland for a few days a week. It wasn't extortionate, but obviously not free! However it's monitored, busy and your car will be surrounded by plenty of others that are potentially easier or more appealing to break into.

I thought that went without saying 🙂

If it was me (and couldn't take jambalaya or superfli's offer), I'd park in Cosham and train from there (often do).

Just don't park it in Lea Park
It's Leigh Park - and it's nowhere near Pompey anyway. (You snob!)

I also live 4.5 miles from the ferry terminal and you could park on my drive no problem. It's all down hill to the ferry on the way there too 🙂

Email in profile if you're interested.

Wow, this place is manned by some really nice people!

Thank you all for your offers (superfli, Jambalaya & timnoyce) and all suggestions of areas to park in.

The two week tour will consist of a 3 day journey to L'Isle Jourdain (south east of Poitiers) then staying with family for a while, followed by a ride back north. Route not yet decided. Might use the De Normandie a L'Atlantique route and turn left to Saumur then south, or might do my own route Le Mans, Saumur, Chatellerault.

Lots of planning to do yet!

Cheers 🙂

And I forgot to say, superfli offered me some parking 10 miles away, but timnoyce is half the distance away and I need to think about saving my legs, so I'll be in touch.

Always the gosport side - our business premises have plenty of free space you can use and 2 miles to the ferry.

But it'll take 10 hours to get out of Gosport thanks to New Gate lane being some sort experiment into how far you can push people before they start re-enacting Falling Down.

Did someone not READ the post then? 🙄

2 miles to the ferry and 3 mins across to the Hard and then shoot round into the ferry port.

He isn't trying to get out of gosport first thing if he's travelling overnight.
