Apparently it's going to get very warm at night for the next few days and i do not sleep well in the heat so...

has anyone bought one of those cheap air conditioners - not the ones you have to hang an elephant's trunk out your window - but the Evaporative Cooler type?

I can't see how evaporative cooling would work well, it's surely just going to make everything much more humid which makes matters worse?

Have you tried fans?  We have used a fan blowing up the stairs, or a fan blowing in or out of a window.  A nice compact USB powered one that barely makes a noise.  Ceiling fans are also really good for this and are silent.

We also have plenty of warm curtains on our windows and doors for the winter, but these also work for the summer. We leave all the windows open at night to cool the house down and then as soon as we get up we shut the windows and curtains which keeps the house much cooler during the day. We also added loft insulation (this keeps heat out in the summer as well as in during the winter), and we lagged the pipes in the airing cupboard as they would give off a lot of heat upstairs which was a bad thing in the summer.

Good quality ceiling fans for the win... its 29c in the shade here and im perfectly comfortable...

These are about £170 each, 1.2m diameter IIRC, and are modern, so very quiet and cost peanuts to run compared to AC.

Although I can bring out the big guns in an emergency...

When you say "very warm".... (Waives from Aus)

We only in the last couple of years, got AC. We survived 10 summers with ceiling fans and water mister bottles.

Shit air con is, unsurprisingly shit. And noisy.

I think it depends on the climate. If it's hot and dry, no problem. If it's hot and humid, problem.

I haven't tried one of these but might be worth looking into? Or perhaps a vanlifer has some experience of one? https://uk.ecoflow.com/products/wave-3-portable-air-conditioner

^I guess you pay for the portability but considering its outrageous price and its poxy BTU output the OP could do it properly and fit one of these... And another one at his father's and still have change.

We have had a portable unit (with a pipe) for over 20 years. Sits on the upstairs landing, long pipe out of the bathroom window. Modern house so it retains heat especially on the two south facing bedrooms that get hot. Certainly helps keep the rooms cool. They aren't quiet.

I could understand a portable one if it realy needs to be portable, but otherwise, it's a solution looking for a problem. And a very expensive, loud and inefficent one at that.

I'd be happy with a fan, but the boss hates them, complains they dry her eyes. We've had ceiling fans, stand alone fans and flung all windows open. The upper rooms just retain heat. For the few weeks a year we use it, it's fine. Uses about 1Kwh It can then be put away.

If a fan dries her eyes then move the fan further away...also if that is correct then air conditioning is going to make those eyes much worse.

Edit - Misread and thought that it was op who posted about dry eyes!

You’re going to use air conditioning and heating in the same house at the same time? There must be a better way

I used one for a couple of years and eventually replaced it with a mini-split system, which is far more efficient. However, despite being rattly, noisy, expensive, and horribly inefficient to run, it kept the bedroom at a comfortable temperature on the hottest nights of the year.

If you can find a proper two-pipe system then you'll see much better performance.

The room i stay in is not heated. Anyway, bought one so hopefully it will work for the 1 day a year i need it.

Another fan of fans here. I've lived in Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia and I prefer fans to aircon - they're cheap, portable, and flexible.

Point them at your feet if it gets really hot.

Happy Homer Simpson GIF

I've only added the Gif because:

a) i've just realised that I can, and

b) who doesn't love Homer?
