Re the fuel economy, 30mpg isn’t much different to the real world economy of the vans a lot of MTB folk tool about in.
20mpg towing is pretty good.
We used Greta for last weekends bank holiday to tow T@batha to a small campsite, we were the only caravan there along with a few tents. Was nice but the weather was rubbish and didn't take any pics.
But anyway.......MrsRNP was out today so tinkering time!
I could hear a clicky bearing in the aux belt area.
Replaced the water pump, tensioner and idler pulley. Noise gone👍 Fully flushed cooling system and refilled.
Then turned my attention to the rear....
The reverse parking sensors have never worked and the chrome boot floor/bumper protector had an annoying dent in it. Replacement was sourced from the Porsche breakers for a few quid. Bumper cover removed and trim replaced, parking sensors removed for further fettling tomorrow
Surface rust ground away from two small areas. The corrosion protection is good and there isn't much rust on the body shell for a 19year old car). The affected areas will be epoxy coated.

I saw a bit of a wheeler dealers yesterday, one of the ones with Ant, in America. The car was a cayenne. I think you could teach Ant a thing or 6.

I've been beaten! I removed the rear bumper, reversing sensors and loom. I checked them with my oscilloscope and found one failed.
However the voltage seemed a little low at 8.5volts. I removed the PDC module and pulled the circuit board out but it was dry and okay. Reassembled with a replacement sensor but still doesn't work.
I'll get Vagcom at some point and track the fault down properly.
Painted the body underside of the bumper area with Jotun epoxy mastic.
Reassembled then did some towing.
I've had a notification set up on eBay for awhile for 18" Cayenne wheels, these popped up - 958 18"'s with new Maxxis all terrains (from a bore score broken V8). Got them for £350. Better ride comfort than with the 19's.
Subframe rust busting next, but unfortunately Greta is having to cover for a few days for my 20 year old Berlingo/Pug Partner daily driver that has shat a CV joint.

Another small update and a few photos seeing as mine have disappeared??????.......and nothing much to report! We've been caravaning a few times since to various small quiet campsites (no children/clubhouses etc) and they've been great.
Car running well but only been used for towing, not done anything to it but it's just clicked over at 170k so is having an oil change and a prep for an upcoming roadtrip....
Bought a code reader (£160) as the reverse sensors had beaten me, turns out three of them have failed. New ones bought but not fitted yet.

Not towing it will do ~30mpg, the ~20mpg is two up towing. When it’s not towing it’s parked up – it’s not a daily.
Considering my Yamaha-engined 1.7 Zetec Puma with 130bhp would deliver roughly 33mpg, and about 26-27mpg with my bike on a roof-carrier, the Cayenne seems almost frugal considering its a much bigger car, with a much larger engine, and all of the complexity of a full 4x4 system.
I haven’t seen any of the photos, I can’t work out how to open them, sadly, but I’ve long had a desire for a Cayenne, or even better the Touareg with the V10 TDi, properly fitted with off-road kit, ie good underbody protection, an exoskeleton with off-road light bars, winches, towing hitches, etc.
Of course that requires a significant amount of money, they’re even more complicated than the Porsche, due to the active suspension system amongst other things.
One can but dream.
Hurrah! Now I can actually see the car, and I have to say that’s a lovely thing, considering it’s age, it stunning! I envy you the skill set to enable you to do all the work yourself, and the facilities to do it, I have neither, but to be able to keep a car going instead of sending it to CoPart is a great thing, the carbon footprint of its manufacture is being spread over a greater and greater timeline, which is all to the good.

Another engine oil service as it recently clicked over at 170k also PAS fluid change. Fuel tank brimmed with 470mile range showing.
Last minute rusted exhaust heat shield studs ground off and riv nuts fitted with stainless bolts.
Few extra tools, footpump, LR bottle jack, packets of epoxy, cable ties, jump leads, footpump, anchovies, and bottle of coolant stuffed into the space saver and rear storage areas
Recent PSA Nordisk tent packed. Fridge freezer stocked with Bert's raw food and a few arrival beers.

Yep - it's a Buzzrack, the boot isn't <i>massive </i>and I have to make sure Bert has enough room so the tent is in one box and cooking gear in the other. If it wasn't for Bert they'd fit inside Tetris style. Very adjustable, easy to fit and solid when tightened up. I think it's possibly better and cheaper than the Thule Easybase's I kept an eye on eBay (Thule no longer make them).

It has a collapsible sidewall - there's a factory fit 12v air compressor to inflate it in the tool kit. It's never been used which means it might be utter crap and easier to ring the AA?

Midges aren't great - it's been raining for a few days up till this afternoon (I didn't set off till the forecast got better) and it's a nice still evening. Smidge is working well though.
I did a few full boot redline overtakes of dawdling hire campervans near Glencoe so I don't think the economy is bad.

I've done similar with my Thule RideOn 3 rack (like the one below) a few times. I flip the silver bars which the wheels rest on over so it's more basket shaped then ratchet strap a couple of Lomo Drybag Holdalls to it.
hmm. Midges and nordisk tent. While it has mosi netting doors and windows when I used mine there appeared to be no way to properly seal the front corners (where you can let the groundsheet down and have it flat so not a trip hazard). I'm sure the way they fold up is sufficient for waterproofing but it struck me I'd not want to be anywhere midge-y in it.

I went from a great campsite at Roy Bridge (Bunroy Park) and a good dog friendly bar/restaurant (The Old Station at Speen Bridge) via the A82 / A87 Great Glen to Skye.
Stayed at Glenbrittle campsite for a few days, amazing place full of hardcore rock climbers and mountain people, beautiful beach and the Cuillin Ridge just behind. Great pizza! Had an early start before it got too hot and did the couple of hour hike up the Loch / tarn. Evening sat on the beach.
Had a little mooch about Skye then went north to Applecross and I'm on the campsite there currently.
I was originally thinking about doing the NC500 but I'd read the negative impact it was having on the locals. That case was made today. Skye has a lot of single track roads with passing places - it works with only a few snarl ups with unconfident drivers. I drove to Applecross up the Bealach na Bà pass and had Billy balls in his massive wheeled Ford Ranger trying to police everyone and people not knowing how to use single road passing spots. I got to Applecross and parked at the heritage centre to have a nosey. The amount of do not shit or light fires here signs makes me not want to add to the negative impact so I'm going to bail out of the NC500 and go inland next.
Car running well - it was designed for these types of roads/roadtrips. It would be wasted driving round a city centre!

Having been bitten by a dog recently and having had my BiL nearly killed by one today in an over the bars incident, threads like this remind me that dogs are really not the problem, just bad owners. From Applecross we went to Gairloch and a larger campsite. It was actually really good - set in the dunes with pitches wherever you wanted. If you explored a bit and were okay driving on sand there were some really good Instagram worthy spots. Once again a beautiful beach and great weather.
From there cut across country to Inverness then down the A9 to Aviemore before heading for home as the weather broke.
What an amazing roadtrip!
Just over 1100 miles @25.3mpg. The rural west coast, Bealach Na Ba, and Skye single track roads really hurt the fuel economy due to constantly stop/starting.
Car worked faultlessly - I know it's a big heavy unloved SUV but doing things like this is where they are in their element. It's parked up again now.
2 issues
1. It needs cruise control. No idea why you wouldn't option a car like this without it. Can be Porsche Classic retrofitted for £500 from main dealer but that's what I paid for the car so need to figure another way of doing it!
2. Has some driveline vibration when it's been parked overnight. Goes away once it's done a few miles so I suspect the rear propshaft CV joint is dry/tired. It's had a prop a few years ago but the cost would indicate it's an eBay cheapo rather than genuine Porsche (£2200) or OEM (GKN £450). Will be sorted before the Christmas roadtrip we are starting to formulate.

Sierra 4x4s suffered with similar. Front propshaft UJ ran too close to the exhaust
Small update - started cleaning up the rear subframe, it was noted on it's MOT as its bit rusty scabby. Always a fun job with a die grinder and Roloc stripping discs. Needs a bit more work before epoxy coating.
Then this weekend we are away in the caravan again, met up with friends in their camper. Lovely quiet campsite, glorious weather and Bert is happy as always

The Volvo is downstairs in our house but it's had a bit of a pause due to getting on top of the Porsche and buying & using our caravan. I have just finished rebuilding the XC90's rear subframe with all new bushes, and the underside of the bodywork is clean and ready for epoxy. I'm hoping to get it finished over the winter, then I can fully get to work on the Porsche.
Then you can FULLY get to work on the porky! Hahaha! Love it.

It needs a stalk (which I can get from my local Porsche breakers) but there's a cable missing when cruise isn't optioned that needs to be run from the steering column through the bulkhead and spliced into a loom in the engine bay. It then needs to be enabled with PIWIS Porsche diagnostics software. So it's doable but not a priority at the moment.

The work I'm doing so far is just to get it back to a mechanical level I'm happy with and to stop the any rust from progressing further. Once the Volvo is done then I'll bring the Cayenne inside and do it properly - remove the rear subframe for shot blasting, rebush everything etc.
Some good friends have a printing company and have done wraps previously, I think the Rothmans Cayennes look awesome so I might go that route.
Just caught up with this thread - Porky’s looking fantastic, and absolutely in its element! Exactly what Porsche designed it for; for £500, and in the hands of someone with an engineering passion, and the space, what a wonderful project.

Small update.
Cruise control
Porsche want ~£500 for the cruise control retro fit kit which consists of the stalk, short length of cable and two pins for the cable to connect into the steering wheel module and main loom. You can't buy the stalk on its own, but the pins are available separately for less than £2.
Ive bought a complete steering wheel module from an Audi Q7 (functionally the same as a Cayenne) for £15 off eBay. I'll remove the stalk and fit it to my module.
Subframe.
Made myself comfy with a bit of foam seeing as I'm going to be under here for quite a few hours! Ground/scraped/chiseled the rust off, treated with Bilt Hamber, let that cure then brushed Bilt Hamber Dynax over the top. I'm going to source a spare subframe, have it shot blasted and do it properly like I've done with my XC90 subframe but this will do for this winter's protection.
Popped the front sill covers off and surprisingly both sides were really good condition, there are some horror stories online of major rot in this area. Hosed a lot of compacted dirt out then popped the covers back on.
And finally - ferry booked yesterday for Christmas road trip.....
Oh, to have the necessary knowledge, skills and space to be able to do something like this! My ideal car.

When you run older cars everyone has already had the same problems and they are widely documented on forums etc.

No particular skills needed for this particular job, just patience and determination (it's a bloody awful job that I hate doing). The factory Porsche workshop manual and parts ID is available FOC online for any major tinkering. I haven't had to make any specific tooling yet and have used normal hand tools.
Space
All the jobs on this Porsche have been done outside. It requires a bit of planning and luck with the weather - ie get the car prepped for winter when the weather is nice.
Time
Is the thing I have plenty of which is probably the main difference.
@countzero - keep an eye on autotrader, there are the occasional unmolested genuine cars that values have been dragged down by the blinged up gangsta wanna be pimped Cayennes. Theres a silver 955 in London with the very rare tailgate spare wheel carrier - it might even have the ultra rare locking rear differential. A V6 on coils is pretty easy to maintain, avoid the V8's and diesels if running on a shoestring and stick to pre 2006 for lower road fund.

But before that we've been down to see friends in St David's Pembrokeshire (550mile round trip).
I know I keep harping on about how good this car is, and nowadays it's probably completely outclassed.....but the motorway weather conditions going were atrocious and it handled the torrential rain absolutely surefootedly. We came back today on the twisty route through the middle of Wales in glorious sunshine and the car wore a different hat as it effortlessly cruised home.
However! Big expenditure is looming.........
It's been flagging a few transfer box faults now for the last couple of journeys. The transfer box is the '2nd gearbox' bolted onto the back of the 'normal' gearbox that then splits the output drive to the front and rear axles. It also contains a lower ratio 'set of gears' for low speed off roading.
It's a big chunk of metal that newer Cayennes don't have.
Bolted to the transfer box is an actuator motor, this operates the high/low range selection. Mine is throwing a fault code as 1st gen Cayennes overworked this actuator causing it to overheat and damage the feedback potentiometer.
New ones are £1200..........
Also of concern is the rear propshaft, this is a well known problem for 955's and Touraregs. The centre support bearing has a thin rubber outer supporting ring that wears fairly quickly. The propshaft then flails around. Mine has been replaced by the previous owner (at a garage) but they bodged the main CV joint cover. As a result it's spun it's grease out and is becoming noisy.
New genuine Porsche propshafts are £2000.......(I don't fit Chinese/eBay/aftermarket junk in any of my cars)
It's also throwing the odd evap valve fault but these are only £35.
Bit of decision making and some tinkering required before it's next big trip out at Christmas. Maybe running a £500 Cayenne isn't so cheap after all, let's see what I come up with......

Yes that's what I was about to suggest, the shed-man indy doing refurbishment and upgrades, probably on a swap basis and hopefully half the price of new. Get one from a scrapper to send in if you need to keep the car (? 'Car' seems very inappropriate!) on the road in the meantime.

How complex is the props aft?
Here in Oz you can get them made. I sat and watched someone make one for me years ago. He even put higher spec joints in "just in case".
It's usually the support bearing that fails - mine has been replaced previously but the garage bodged the centre CV joint cover in the process.
There are lots of options ranging in cost from £150 new Chinese eBay units through to £600 OEM (GKN) and then upwards to new genuine.

My thinking at this moment in time is to source a used propshaft from my local Porsche breakers then fit a JXB support bearing upgrade. This mod replaces the outer rubber support ring (you cut it off the bearing) and doesn't require the driveshaft to be split.
Small update.
So we left the thread with a knackered propshaft and a transfer box actuator code......
I'd been keeping an eye on eBay for awhile for used propshafts just to see what came up.
I noticed a good condition used shaft with a 'white sticker' in one of the photos. Zooming in showed it was a recent date GKN (OEM), the listing was for a 3.2 so it hadn't seen Turbo power in its time. I haggled it for £120 delivered.
On delivery it looked like new and the centre bearing support was good. I popped the CV end cover off and repacked it with moly grease then gave the shaft a few layer's of Rustoleum.
The following weekend I dropped the original shaft and mounting plate out. This is why I don't use garages - this centre bearing had been replaced previously (probably with a cheap and nasty unbranded crap), it was dry and knackered. The centre CV cover was bodged and had spun it's grease out. Both CV's are dead and the shaft is headed for the scrap bin.

Mounting plate cleaned up and painted, shaft installed and 'aligned' by rack of eye and twist of gob.

Transfer box actuator - I removed this at the same time as the propshaft. I pulled it apart as I'd read of some being 'burnt out' on disassembly. Fairly simple - DC perm mag motor with multi stage epicyclic reduction box to operate the transfer case and a quadrature channel encoder for feedback of position.
Checked it's operation and everything looked okay so I cleaned, greased, painted as required then reinstalled. Fault code needs further investigation.

Whilst the rear end was raised I pulled the wheels off and cleaned/Dinitrol'd the hubs, brake splash guards etc.
Spark plugs. I hate doing these, it's a simple job but the consequences are huge should something go wrong.
Porsche include a nifty little tool for pulling the coil cable connectors then an eBay tool pulled the coils out of the head. They all looked original and fairly clean.
Hoovered everything before removing the spark plugs.

Test drove and everything's fine, the replacement propshaft has removed the low speed bearing whine and feels more direct / less clunky.

I love this thread. FWIW, the P0441 code can be thrown by worse than normal fuel - my GTI throws it every time I fill up in NL after a tank or two in Germany. We used to get transfer box fault codes thrown up on our old L322 as well, which ended up being the potentiometer's track wearing away and the car throwing a fit because all of a sudden it didn't know where it was. Switching between high, low, and back to high again at the next opportunity always cleared it.

Re. the transfer box code that this is throwing - the 4wd system on these Cayenne's is really complex and the cars are very capable (they benchmarked against Ranger Rover's). The actuator changes the high/low ratio selection but also constantly shifts torque front to rear as needed via a set of clutch plates and can lock the clutch pack to emulate a locking centre differential. Early 955's had an over active control module, this resulted in the motors burning out hence why I disassembled mine. Later modules and actuators can be retrofitted but they are fairly rare and you have to search eBay for serial numbers.
Frustratingly the same fault can be thrown due to low battery voltages as the position feedback from the actuators encoder takes 'too long' due to lower voltages driving the motor.
The battery is buried under the passenger seat and is bit of a faff to access so I don't know how old the battery is yet. Further investigation required!

I've done a Binners and crayon'd out the 50 & 955 numbers and made the background transparent. I think removing the random wheel is beyond my skillset for now.

Tinkering pretty much complete for now.
Front jacking points are a bit exposed and any galvanising has long since disappeared so the light surface rust was removed then my usual routine of Bilt Hamber to kill any pitted rust followed by Jotun epoxy mastic. Undertray refitted with new stainless bolts. Didn't take any pics.
Ram Xgrip phone mount track attached to the dash top vent.
Had a printing business friend do me a small run of my logo sticker to add to the previous Rothmans and Deus stickers for added coolness.
......and the overnight sailing with dog friendly cabin out of Harwich is booked for the 27th December, the only thing between us and the ferry is the MOT that's booked for this Tuesday, any fails won't leave me much time to resolve. Fingers crossed!

I forgot to include that I'd done a bit more logo tinkering - I registered a free account with Adobe Firefly, I think it's pretty much Chatgpt but with a fancy front end. Adobe Firefly gave me more credits - Chatgpt only allowed a few revisions before locking me out for 24hours.
Anyway, I did a few different colourways. As someone who has no artistic talent at all I was more chuffed with the results of tinkering with digital crayons than I am the car passing it's MOT today!

So! Christmas out of the way we loaded some tools and our cargo boxes and set off on the 27th for a night sailing out of Harwich with Stenaline to Hook of Holland, traffic was busy all the way with many delays and hold ups.
Me and MrsRNP had a dog friendly cabin and I slept okay, disembarked then slow and steady through Holland with its 100km/h motorway limits. Into Germany and cheaper fuel and higher speed autobahns heading for our overnight hotel in Leipzig.
From there it was our final leg into the Czech Republic and Prague. Bizarrely the temperature plummeted to -5c just after crossing the border. Met up with MrsRNP younger sister (who lives and works in Prague) and parked Greta at the International Hotel.
Just had a great meal and a few drinks!
Our £500 Porsche has once again proved to be an incredible car for this type of journey - roomy, spacious and surefooted, it's only blotted its copybook by blowing one of the small sidelight parking bulbs!
........and that 18hours and 26minutes were spent with the mother in law in the same car!........

Loving this thread! The decal design is outstanding, creating something like that when I was in print and graphics I’d have spent a day or more drawing that up in Illustrator. After coming up with a design.

Forgot to say - stripping, cleaning and rebuilding the transfer box actuator has appeared to work, it didn't throw up the '4wd fault' that would have been expected previously.
26mpg average for motorway miles? That's worse than my 944 s2 used to get. Aren't you going to have spent more than the purchase price of the car in fuel on this one trip alone (I think you might be north of £200 already?)
