Looks like my 9 year old wheels (one of them in particular) might have developed this porosity problem. I see that it's possible to have them treated and refurbed . Does anyone have experience of this? I'm particularly interested in long-term results, costs and timescales.

Thanks.

Had similar about a month ago, local garage used a black tyre paint on the inside of the rim. It used to go flat over about 3-4 days but since having this done it's held pressure.

ETA cost a tenner with new valve, dropped it off in morning and picked up in the afternoon.

From what I can see it's a fair bit of faff to refurb, and a lot of cases it's not porous alloy but corroded rims, which can be sorted out. Clean up and maybe use bead sealant.

I also wonder if a sealant like Puncturesafe would do the job. I've used that to fix punctures with success and it would provide a coating I believe, though not sure if it just sticks to the tyre and not the wheel (as they claim it doesn't make a mess of the wheel). It may provide a seal around the bead though, bit like bike tubeless sealant.

I used tyreweld on porous vw rims of the early 2000 which were notorious for it. Went from inflating them once every couple of weeks to inflating them maybe twice a year.

Depends on value of car .

Refurb does work but costs . I went cheap as car was a hateful piece of shit ( vw natch) and I wanted it to die.

Painting inside of rim also works .

And in some  cases it is a corroded Rim seat and in others it's just a puncture - I'd be especially suspicious of this If id only one going flat as all 4 wheels tend to be subject to the same conditions as the others.

Check the inside of wheel for damage. Colleague was moaning of this only to find his rim was cracked !!
