So i had this issue for about 6 month but never addressed it until today

My internet connection speed on the itug devices will not stream video or if it does its flaccid inducing slow (the same applies for FB news feed, youtube ect)

i have testing the connection on various online speed testers on both wired and wifi devices and everything is fine.

I am currently using my mobile data for most activities, and as soon as i switch wifi off everything is fine.

i have spoke to Virgin and they say the service is performing as its supposed to and that its likely a device setting issue, i asked what kind of setting issue but was told id need to speak to the manufacture for each device...i have 2 ipads, iphone, PS4, windows laptop, Fire Tv that all suffer.

So i am at a loss as to what to fault find next ?

Cheers and merry Christmas xx

Sounds like your hard drive isn't performing.

Virgin are fobbing you off.

Probably not even a real Virgin.

Could Drac pop around and give you a hand?

Try downloading from the play store or apple equivalent a WiFi analysis app. I had the same problem which I narrowed down to overcrowding on the default router WiFi channel.

You can see how many WiFi channels are in use by your neighbours and then select one that is relatively clear.

(not if you don't have neighbours in close proximity then this probably isn't your problem but worth trying to change the default channel or switching to the 5g faster WiFi to see if that makes a difference)

In my case channel 1 was overcrowded and caused buffering / streaming issues. Switched to 6 and problems went away.

So the various speedtests are fine and showing good results (what figures?) but when the same device, on the same connection, tries to watch streaming video it is slow?

Weird.

Could be that video is being throttled somehow though you’d think Virgin would know about that. Any family filters or the like set up on your router? Checked the router settings any QoS (quality of service) settings?

Could be some spaffed up QOS setting in the router. Does it have a factory reset option? If so factory reset it and see if that fixes it. Obviously ensure you have original passwords etc.

BBC iPlayer used to have a good streaming speed test. I've had it in the past where a normal broadband speed test showed good speed but iPlayer was awful which was corroborated by the iPlayer speed check. Raised it with plusnet and they sorted it.

Edit: looks like iPlayer one isn't available any more. Try this from Netflix instead https://fast.com/

We had a similar problem with an ee brightbox router. 14mb ish speed tests but could not stream. Swapping to an ancient DSL router I had laying around and suddenly it was all good.

To check for device or router/connection issue do you have a laptop/pc you can hardwire into the router? If the issue persists then it removed WiFi as the cause. In my example above our TV would not stream dispite being wired in.

Do you have an old router that would could use? I know on virgin you'll need there kit to connect to the fibre but you may be able to use it as a modem only with another router doing the routing.

If you goggle the routers model are their people complaining of similar issues?

Thanks for all the advice

1. I will restore to factory settings and test again
2. Download a WiFi analysis app and and play with Channels (don't expect much interference around here)
3. I have just had a look at the virgin router control panel and i can put it in modem mode so i will try and dig out my old ASUS router and test again
4. I will kindnap Richard Branson undergo a facial reconstruction / Face off surgery (whichever is easier/cheaper) and go pull myself around Necker island using his Premium 4K Porn hub account.

I recently moved our router location by installing phone extension. This meant I could get rid of a WiFi repeater)booster. Absolute night and day change in speed and reliability of connection. I can only assume the booster multiplies data and was overloading the router or similar.

MOA I think some routers can only handle talking to a single device at once, i.e. there is a queue and a bit of data is sent to each client in turn. Could be the WiFi repeater multiplying this effect. I'm looking at a while house mesh network with separate back hall link and mimo connections for the same issue. Not cheap though!

If you've got a superhub2 ask to be upgraded to the new superhub3.

My superhub2 started to behave very odly, not quite the same as yours but along similar lines (randomly dropping connections), tech support couldn't solve it so they replaced it. The new hub has sorted all the problems out.

Just be careful updating to superhub 3 its not without its without its own issues either.
We've recently had virgin 200mb fiber installed and im having to run the superhub in moden mode and running an asus router to run the various wifi and ethernet things around the house.
there is supposedly a firmware update coming out according to some net chatter but its vague as to when this is actually going to be.
The superhub 3 web interface is slow and a bit poo.

What sort of signal are you getting on your device?

I’ve noticed with my iPhone I have a 3 bar system. You’d think it would be, Usable / Okay / Great but in actual fact it’s more like completely useless but just enough to stop you switching over to 4G rendering your device useless / 5% better than 1 bar / fine, unless it’s not.
