So every two weeks I would buy some pork scratching/crackling whatever you want to call them at my local Grainger market in the toon. Used to have two shops selling them, then one closed down leaving only one selling them. A bag cost around £2.40 and we are talking about the traditional cooked then put into the clear plastic bag type with MSG. No logo etc. I think it is around 200 gram per bag. Good with cold beer. It is now two weeks to top up my cholesterol with pig fat so went to buy some ... me not happy cholesterol topping porky now.

A small bag now cost £1.50 and there are only few pieces in it and probably not even 1/4 the weight of what they used to be, and now they have this fancy plastic packaging with "Great taste" printed on package too. FFS! Yes, the stall selling them told me they are now all in this fancy plastic packaging. F#*~@U*X&$C£%! Not only the price has double but the quantity has shrank ... I ain't buying.

FFS! Beer is not going to taste as good now.

p/s: I might need to buy fatty pork rind to make them myself now ... FFS!

That wouldn't last me any time at all...you have a strong dose of willpower...and I don't even bother with the drink!

Are they cooked in cradley or Tipton? If not then you are wasting your money at any price. Genuine pork scratchings are cooked in the Black Country
Eat them in the Barbara Cartland room in the Waggon an horses Halesowen for the full experience

They got their supply from somewhere which I never asked but I am not a happy porky. The joy of life is gone! Beer with expensive pork scratching! Has the world gone mad!

One day I will try those in Black Country. As a kid my mum used to make them and used them for cooking too. The good old days.

Thank me later. 😉

Hhhhmmm ... different technique. My local supply is different when you bite on it you can taste the aromatic pork fat and the pieces are more solid.

Yes, sometimes that would happen to me too. Once I start eating before dinner I would finish the whole bag and spare the dinner LOL! Just bear and pork fat would do.

I would have thought chewkw that given your Far East background you would be roasting belly pork every week. Two wonderful byproducts being delicious homemade crackling and dripping.

Mmmmm... Porky crunchiness...,
My folks used to have a shop after they retired and sold proper Black Country scratchings by the 1/4 pound from a massive bin bag sized package.

Was absolute heaven having them to hand any time, day or night. 🙂

Several sellers on eBay have kilo bags of Black Country scratchings. Awesome. Nothing like a handful of hairy scabs to ward off the munchies as part of a keto diet.

Oh yeah a real Keto “diet” snack. 9 calories per gram of fat (and saturated fat too!)

😆

And dont forget the huge amount of salt. In fact I think they add extra salt.

Pork Scratchings = Heart attack. All the ingredients are in there.

Most of the butchers near us sell it loose.
Buy kilo of it if we're sport watching or have a film night.

I don't think anyone is suggesting it's a staple.

Those Snaffling Pig calendars are excellent - a great way to try all their flavours without needing to buy a full bag of each.

Are flavoured scratchings wrong? I really like proper original flavour ones but an occasional s&v or English mustard scratching can be a thing of beauty.

Not a chance. The black pepper ones are awesome! As are the other flavours.

Being a purist about things like this would mean only eating ready salted crisps

Who wants to live in that world?

We do. We do. In fact Chinese roast pork our fast food that we can eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner or as a snack. Well, my father would just eat roast pork belly, with crackling of course, for breakfast with a bit of noddle almost every weekend. We have another kind of fried noodle that is swimming in pork fat and scratching with dark soy sauce. But preferably to eat it after some beer or if not with some good strong tea. Yammy! Although people eat roast pork belly most of the time the portion of the meat is actually not a lot. For example, a roast joint in UK can easily feed 5 or 6 adults in one sitting.

Does your butcher not sell scratchings?? Used to get a massive bag for a quid.

Even the local butcher here (in Aus) does them but they call it pork crackle here (hehe).

BTW if you're ever in Spain they're "torreznos". Available in bars all over the country.

Raising your own pigs and making your own bacon is the obvious post-Brexit solution to the impending famine.

Bacon grease spread on a salty cracker has all the same nutritional goodness.

Or just switch to beaver nuggets.

I've got one here... was a freebee... sign up to their mailing list and the big wheel spins and gives you a prize... I struck gold...

As are the other flavours.

I've bought a pack of the mustard flavoured ones... can't see how that can be a bad thing... will report back on Friday...

There was a sketch on Not the nine o'clock news way back - the pedantic barman offers: 'Can I interest you in some snacks?, how about some pork scratchings, chicken itchings or doggy scabs!'

Pork Scratching World

I rather like this one but some inconsistency in skin hardness may break your tooth, which I did a few times. This is rather common in the UK.

Pork Scratching 1

But this one is rather common also but not as good for substitute but is also widely available, which I bought some as substitute on the day.

Pork scratching 2

This one I get sometimes taste ok but without much fat

Pork scratching 3

This one is rather common in the far east in variety of forms. A good one will have rather consistent skin hardness and does not break the tooth.

Not everyone's cup of tea pork scratching tbh.
Yes, if you eat too much you will feel sick hence not supposed to be eaten often.

Came here to say that the mustard flavoured crackling was good, but not as good as the ghost chilli ones... when... broke a tooth! Danger food.

That's why home-made are so good - you can leave them with just a touch of give to spare your teeth. Chewy scratchings, nom nom nom! 🙂
