Thanks, we'll get Tech to have a look at it as soon as they've finished re-networking the office...

I think the point is, if the majority of potential/new users will be coming to the site as non-members then the site should work well, not spam them with pop-up's and potential virus and make them want to stay and/or join. Of course being a paid member will (hopefully) give you a better experience.

Being a paid member also ensures there is something here for you to see for free was the main point i was making

Oh, I got stung by this last night, only Force Stop and revert to factory version of Chrome got rid. Needs sorting quickly if you want any mobile traffic.

Being a paid member (insert joke here) I too enjoy the fact it logs me out meaning a refresh has just cost me a few quid instead of pence. ( in India atm)

Junkyard - lazarus

Bollocks! If no-one paid there would still be a site here, you think they would just go 'oh well lets all go on the dole rather than try and make this work'. Paid membership only exists for one reason, there are enough muppets like you (Lazarus, been here forever) have no-where else to go and they know that by letting you pay for the service you'll think your part of the 'in crowd'. Its like offering free peanuts at the bar.

*I paid as the adverts make the non-logged-in site so shite to use that its slow even on fibre at work.

I let my sub and premier thing die after a couple of years. I don't agree with certain directions the mag has taken and I don't like some of the writing and reviewing. The forum I do like and I am aware that my visiting it increases the clicks that make the site valuable to advertisers. So I am supporting single track by visiting and seeing the ads.
Those with a P are supporting in a different way.
As I say, the forum is the main appeal for me. For the rest I usually hit Pinkbike first.

Junkyard, the point is the nature of the adverts. Considering one of the ones that's popped up (excuse the pun) for me so far is full-on pornographic, it's not on.

If Pinkbike had a decent forum I think this place would die off rather quickly.

As above, over and over. It's rather sad TBH.

As for newbs getting bombarded until they subscribe. Well, it doesn't take a genius to make a comparative image of what's actually happening there...

"Pay up or we'll **** you up. Got it...?!"

Delighted to know you paid for good reasons and I paid because i am a sad lonely muppet. We do need more charmers like you on here 😉

Clearly I like the place and i think they deserve something for all the entertainment i receive - if not quite love and respect- from on here

Fair enough re advert content I am sure that is not intentional

At least the captain got it as humour rather than a post worthy of analysis or deeply cutting personal barbs 😛

Heh

It was written with a large amount of tongue in cheek, guys. Sometimes you need to let folk play a bit; it helps iron out the creases.

It just made me think i had got a virus.
Was just really glad that i wasn't on work wifi as the porn popup wouldn't have been well recieved

Couldn't you just deposit the money directly into the bank account of those forum members who've entertained you?

Cut out the middleman as it were.

Hang on! Hang on! Hang on! Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop! Can we have some consistency here, please?
We go out with our mates and refuse to share the bill because we're not prepared to pay for the entertainment, but here, but here, let me finish, here we are happy to use the "happy to pay for entertainment" argument as a justification.
Now, I'm not the sharpest tool in the box, but there's something wrong here. 😛

You're absolutely right.

The adverts are delivered by a third party service. If inappropriate ads are being delivered then that's not the intention of the site and they need to be stopped. As Chipps said it's already being looked into, but screenshots and any additional information can be sent to ads@singletrackworld.com who are empowered to track down the issue.

Although (P) I find some ads useful. Getting wound up by the video on the Bentley ad though. I was pleased to see a change from Screwfix ads to iontorrent today.[img]Interesting targetted ad by prettygreenparrot, on Flickr[/img]

seems that work is encroaching on fun.

I only get the ads down the side, top and bottom, I haven't had any pop-ups for ages, not even pr0n, sadly.
I stopped using Google as my default search engine ages ago on my phone and switched over to DuckDuckGo, which has made a big difference, although neither I nor Cougar seem to be able to say why, exactly.

lol interesting to hear others opinions on this and why they subscribe.

Because i like the mag and wanted to access digital and online content. Then i find a forum clique, or viciously judgemental responses and an open classified section, and start wonder the same thing.

The relaxed ethos of the mag that is all about the experience rather the the equipment, ability, or the bike, doesn't come through on line. And too many up-tight, persecuted roadies online. Especially Bez.

The ads make the site unusable unless you subscribe and the anti marketing bits makes Stw site increasingly less attractive. Yes it might be PR by tyre back door but rather watch that than an insipid bike review.
