Just support the forum by buying a "P" and never get advertised at again.

Untrue, because the site often logs me out, and if I'm just browsing, I generally notice only after I've got one of those stupid pop ups.

And even if it were true, are you saying that users of a free forum should expect to have their devices compromised unless they pay up?

I have one more little thing to add.

It’s not the Mods fault, they’re just in the firing line because like most of us they enjoy and contribute to the forum as much as we do.
So, let’s be constructive, let’s not pick on the Mods because this isn’t their problem. They’ll do thier best to note and help as well all know, but this clearly is a back office issue and they will in time seek out the nasties.

Happy New Ya!

Thank you.

We spoke to Mark earlier. TL;DR, it's complicated but they're working on it.

Roger Mellie.

I'd suggest that you take a look at your devices or the software you are running.

I've never seen an advert whilst logged in. And I've wasted too much time on here.

Yes.

I've never seen an advert whilst logged in.
I've not seen an advert whilst signed in either. But I have been redirected to a 'virus warning' webpage when logged in and clicked on a forum thread page.
Android 6.0.1 and Chrome. Is that good/bad/ indifferent? I don't have any room on the phone to install another browser.
I'll try to capture a screenshot next time it happens and send to the tech email address.

Same here. Also Chrome. Don't use the site on mobile enough to know if this is an everyday occurrence, but I was definitely signed in, and I definitely have ads turned off.

If you want to know why the issue of bad Ad networks is actually dangerous to site users then read this

What does that have to do with ad networks?

This is describing building trojan software using NPM modules (NPM is a JavaScript package manager). The vulnerability here isn't third-party adverts, it's web developers including infected modules in their website code.

The forum is basically unusable for me now on my phone. If I haven't got a deadly virus every fifth page that loads I've won an imaginary iPad. Even using incognito tabs which is necessary because they can be shut more easily, normal ones require a phone restart to get rid of the.

It is ****ing ridiculous everyday several times a day. Why? Because I don't pay. Ironically I was going to pay the ransom but it appears even the mighty ****ing P doesn't save us.
Tell you what I'll pay for P but does a tech bod want to gamble a free P? I'll pay it if you'll return the cost first redirect.

All is good even when I'm not logged in to get the benefit of The P.

Anyone tries using chrome beta to see if it helps?

Could be a issue with updated version, it does seem to effect Android more. Whatever it is it must be bloody annoying.

Stupidly guys, try Chrome Beta on android.

Worth a shot if only to report back.

It'll import everything from chrome too, so will only take a few minutes to try. It doesn't get rid of normal Chrome, just runs as a separate app. 🙂

Good luck!

No screen shot but there is a similar pop up happening on Safari (macOS10.13.2). I've also had it on Firefox on a windows X PC. The pop-ups appear specific to the OS being used

CountZero you can post it as often as you like. Your irate victim blaming, suggesting that you deserve an explanation and that it is completely reasonable for people to have to install a new browser and search engine just to access this site is completely laughable. Android has ~80% of the new phone market, and STW is alone in all the sites I've ever visited in being unusable on my Android device*. Doesn't sound like brilliant business for STW Towers.

*typing this on a work PC where loads of web content gets blocked and STW just runs slowly.

Still not fixed? Check
Victim blaming? Check
Assurances that THEY care? Check

Either they don't actually care or are incompetent?

Android/Chrome - get these redirects a lot.

I recommend keeping an extra tab open, and if you remember to open STW in Incognito mode as it's easy to shut that down from the home screen.
I also recommend not wearing too short a skirt - you're just asking for it.

Whitestone
A) It's the latest android version 8.1 (are you saying it's this version but the same on happens on a device running 7? Maybe you could suggest a safe version?)
B) latest version and a clean install from a full factory reset so no add on
C) it's happened on a new/clean/fresh from factory device, so not this.

It doesn't happen on any other website so your hypothesis would seem to be flawed...

I *think* I have mitigated the issue by not using chrome on my android phone .I ditched chrome and I have been using the default samsung browser , I havent had a pop up for a good while (few days now).

This is not to say its chromes fault, it clearly isnt, its clearly some rogue code on the STW website most likely within a 3rd party provided advert, but the samsung browser must handle its attempts to hijack my phone better than chrome does.

All the people blaming malware/virus etc on the victims phones, that is totally incorrect, my phone is 100% clean.

This (having rogue code embedded in 3rd party ads) is a problem that STW need to fix.

There's a good chance that those getting the redirect/popups have:

a) one of several particular versions of Android that have a vulnerability or vulnerabilities.
And
b) one of several versions of Chrome that can use those
And
c) installed one of several malware infected apps/addons.

If each step has ten options then that's 1000 different permutations that could lead to the errant behaviour. You might also have had to have visited the site during a particular time frame if there was an ad that triggered everything.

Done (and I hate to use this particular word in these circumstances) properly, the infection might have happened days or weeks ago before the popups/redirects started. There would be little chance of anyone linking things together as each piece of the jigsaw wouldn't in itself raise concern.

In effect this is what Countzero is asking, his last post wasn't victim blaming but asking you to explain why two apparently identical systems show different behaviour?

Most of my usage of this site is either Chrome on Kubuntu Linux, Chrome on Mac (unsure which version of OS), occasionally Safari on the iPad (old version of iOS as it's an iPad v2) and very rarely Safari on an iPhone 5 (again a fairly old version of iOS). I've yet to get a popup/redirect. So I've done/not done something that others have/have not.

The site is unuseable on chrome on personal phone. Using defult samsung browser on work android phone - which is locked down to prevent any dodgy apps / malware it is also ****ed. Got pop ups within a couple of clicks of the first time of opening the forum up on work phone. Barely ever used on this forum so debunks the theory that heavy users / frequent visitors get hit.

Have sent screen shots through to stw towers with the redirects to no response & this is the only site this happens on.

Now using opera with add blocker turned on and that makes site useable. I appreciate that this hinders revenue for STW and verbotten to talk about and I'd prefer not need to use an add blocker, however I get the redirect every 3 clicks otherwise on either personal or work (clean) phone.

I was also a subscriber / "P" user for 6 years with an ever decreasing probability of returning to being so...

@K - No, what I'm saying is that there may be a version or series of versions that are vulnerable. The point is that if you want infect as many devices as possible you spread your attack around so that there are fewer instances of any one combination for those defending against it to pick up on.

CountZero's repeated question was for us explain why we hadn't gone to the lengths of installing different browsers and search engines rather than "whinge", not for us to explain why two identical devices running the same version of an operating system behaved differently.

It doesn't happen on any other website so your hypothesis would seem to be flawed...

whitestone, surely this, which many of us have highlighted, debunks your theories? If our phones are infected from surfing dodgy Russian octopron on a vulnerable version of Chrome running on a poorly secured handset, why are we only getting viral pop-ups when on STW?

@CTM - fair point. I'm pointing out that there may be more than one thing/flaw required to get them.

So, here's a question: I've just been going round the forum using Safari on my iPhone, both logged in and not logged in. No ad-blocker but have things like third party cookies blocked. By rights I should be seeing popups or getting a redirect but nope, zilch, nada, not one. So if it's STW forum code why is it not causing my phone to be infected?

Yep primark as well. Not bothered flagging it as it's my fault for reading stuff on the forum and having chrome on my android device.
Not surprisingly no one from stw has taken me up on my offer of going P but refunding me if redirects happen after P.

Its a flaw with STWs ads IMO

I don't get it on my desktop but I do on my mobile phone. Chrome on the phone, firefox on the desktop with security turned right up

I remain convinced that if the ads were less aggressive on here folk would not be forced into using adblockers and the redirects happen so much that its more or less unusable on the phone

I don't get this on any other site and I do use very dodgy tv streaming sites for sport

Thank you, exactly the point I was trying to make, along with asking why nobody actually tries what I’ve done, just to see if it makes a difference to their particular circumstances, instead of complaining that I’m victim-blaming and continuing to harangue STW.
It’s such a simple thing to do, took seconds, and seems to have solved a problem that continues to plague plenty of other users; I just can’t see why nobody gives it a try, just to see if it cures the problem?
I’m trying to help here, I’ve found something that works on my pad and phone, and I haven’t had any of these issues since the days of the huge Tudor and Maserati ads that blotted out the entire screen!
So, I ask again, has anyone tried what I did, and simply changed the default browser from Google to DuckDuckGo?
That’s all I did, and I’ve not had a problem like everyone else is having.

Will be interesting to see what happens when google update Chrome to include ad blocking for ads which breech certain standards. 15th Feb is the date I believe. I guess STW towers have verified that all their ads meet the google standards though.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/01/malvertising-factory-with-28-fake-agencies-delivered-1-billion-ads-in-2017/

<p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; color: #bebebe; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background-color: #111010;">Last year brought a surge of sketchy online ads to the Internet that tried to trick viewers into installing malicious software. Even credit reporting service Equifax was caught redirecting its website visitors to a fake Flash installerjust a few weeks after reports of a data breach affecting as many as 145.5 million US consumers.</p>

<p style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; color: #bebebe; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background-color: #111010;">Now, researchers have uncovered one of the forces driving that spike—a consortium of 28 fake ad agencies. The consortium displayed an estimated 1 billion ad impressions last year that pushed malicious antivirus software, tech support scams, and other fraudulent schemes. By carefully developing relationships with legitimate ad platforms, the ads reached 62 percent of the Internet's ad-monetized websites on a weekly basis, researchers from security firm Confiant reported in a report published Tuesday. (Confiant has dubbed the consortium "Zirconium.") The ads were delivered on so-called "forced redirects," in which a site displaying editorial content or an ad suddenly opened a new page on a different domain.</p>

Of all the web pages I visit, This only happens on STW...

I got so sick of it I too a break for 3 months or so and it didn't happen once.

Regardless of the other features of the new website it hasn't happened on my ancient Safari on ancient OS-X since the "upgrade"
