Hard to see how LotR could've been done any better, TBH.

LOTR I (mostly) liked. It was sketchy in places (Legolas surfing off a horse) but mainly it was all ok, if you ignoring the half hour epilogue of mawkish tosh.

What I'm really talking about is The Hobbit, The Hobbit and The Hobbit. 3 of them. Where 1 would have been amply sufficient. And they were all crap CGI, and not just a few moments of crap CGI like LOTR suffered, I mean that crappest of CGI overloads where physics is something for other films to experience and the story is bent to serve the purpose of shoehorning in yet more CGI. Utter, utter, guff.

+1 I still wonder what Del Toro's version could have been like.

Back on track - I quite like Alien Resurrection as you can see the beginnings of Firefly in the crew. Idle hands was a film I enjoyed in my teens, but I've not seen it for years. Think it got terrible reviews when it first came out. Stoner Comedy horror nonsense 🙂

It's a series of set pieces with no coherent plot. It's what you end up with if you take a Bourne film and remove all the interesting stuff.

It's what you get if you have Daniel Craig playing Bourne.

Quantum of Solace is poorly regarded for a reason - it's shite.

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
It didn't get great reviews when it came out, it was responsible for that Bryan Adams song being at #1 for about 3 sodding months, it certainly hasn't aged well and it's got some gaping plot holes and inconsistencies yet somehow I will always watch it and enjoy it when it's on TV.

Demolition Man - love it - it enhances my calm (plus sandra is strangely fit in it)
Starship Troopers - yes, i want to know more.

I know its not seen as cool to like it, but i love the most recent les miserables film. When you have read the book, i think its the most true to the book representation yiu could get.

I think it's down to the late, great Alan Rickman's amazing scenery chewing performance.

'A Life Less Ordinary' is a beautiful film, ignored maybe, but I’d be surprised if it was poorly regarded.

+1. A ridiculously underrated film. I think after Shallow Grave and Trainspotting, people had pigeonholed Danny Boyle and were totally blindsided by what he did next.

EDIT. Only 6.4/10 on IMDB and 39% on Rotten Tomatoes, so quite poorly regarded...

'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' (Terry Gilliam version) was roundly panned on its release but is one of my favourite films.

'Tree of Life' (Terence Mallick) was seen generally deemed to be turgid but I thought it was amazing.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for a film by anyone called Terry.

Malvern Rider »
Shawshank
Despite what was said in the other thread, I don't think the number 1 rated movie of all time on IMDB is actually poorly regarded

You mean ... not STW??

+1 I still wonder what Del Toro's version could have been like.

Yes, because it could have been Pan's Labyrinth.

Then again it could have been Mimic.

Demolition Man

Was that poorly regarded? Its a brilliant action film.

"He doesn't know about the three sea shells."

Dog soldiers

"Sausages!"

Dune again here.

Flawed, full of holes and jumps about the plot, and sure fans of the book may hate it, but it's a David Lynch film, it's stylish, atmospheric, the music is great, and it's got Patrick Stewart and Sting in it! What's not to like? 😉

Starship Troopers - but then poorly regarded is more that some portion of the audience just don't get it or get Verhoeven's satirical humour in most his films. The negative reviews are on how stupid the characters seem to be, but that's the point. They are supposed to be stupid. It's a mockery of every gung-ho American war film. I see it even as a mockery of Aliens which was trying to be serious with the testosterone fuelled crew.

Talking of which... Alien 3 - Assembly Cut. Really like that. Like the bleakness of it.

Star Trek V - Sure it's a low budget follow up to the cheesy "save the4 whales" IV, but Shatner and his wig goes off to find god! Light hearted and silly. Like TOS. 😀

ST Generations - much that's good and I still love that Next Gen finally get a big screen appearance. Ending is bit meh, but I still like it.

In fact ST Insurrection gets a bad rep but I like it. One for the fans sure, but it's a decent romp. More of a TV movie really.

Nemesis on the other hand... I'm still not sure about it, though do like to see the Enterprise E

It came up within the first 3 posts and has been mentioned throughout. I watched Dune an utterly ridiculous number of times as a kid, teenager and adult. I'd watch it again now if I could!
In addition, I don't know if it's poorly regarded or just unknown, but Funnyman is an all timer for me. Great Christopher Lee cameo.

If you're in a silly mood and have a couple of beers to hand, I enjoyed the Slammin Salmon (got 6.5 on IMDB so others enjoyed it too).

If you haven't seen Tuck and Dale vs evil; watch it.

Horible bosses 2 and we're the millers are two films which actually made me LOL recently.

Four that spring to mind are:

The Rise - Timothy Spall is excellent in it;
Outlaw;
Cleanskin;
Dead Man Running.

OMHSS - though anyone who can see past Lazenby not being Sean knows it's actually the best Bond film.

Similarly, I prefer Dalton's first Bond, The Living Daylights to the better regarded (but in my opinion a bit of a snooze fest) Licence to Kill. In fact I really like View to A Kill ! (I mean - Christopher Walken and Grace Jones!) 😀

What I'm really talking about is The Hobbit, The Hobbit and The Hobbit. 3 of them. Where 1 would have been amply sufficient.

Can't argue with that TBH. I enjoyed it and it was well done, but it really didn't need to be three films. The Hobbit is a children's book and a pamphlet compared to LotR.

I quite like Alien Resurrection as you can see the beginnings of Firefly in the crew.

I'm a big fan of the Alien franchise, and rewatched them all recently. Alien Cubed is still gash, I'm sorry, but Resurrection whilst far from being a great film is way better than I remembered it being.

If you haven't seen Tuck and Dale vs evil; watch it.

TuckER and Dale vs Evil is a truly magnificent movie and I can't recommend it highly enough. Double-feature it with Cabin in the Woods.

Southland Tales is a film I enjoy. Failed miserably when shown at Cannes and subsequently it didn't do very well. I've watched it a few times and I even went out of my way to buy the graphic novel.

The Wanted +1, I feel great comic book stuff to the screen
Blue Juice +1, so of an age, essential watching to glimpse to its time
Cloud Atlas +1, so ambitious, I reckon well carried off, helps to know what's going on!

I liked The Lone Ranger too.

Watched Pandorum again the other day, it's still really good! I don't think it got a theatrical release, it was straight to Netflix or something....

Prior to the film's release, Bacon felt that the film was a career low: "I broke down and fell to the sidewalk, screaming to my pregnant wife, 'I can't believe I'm doing a movie about underground worms!'".

While only a modest hit at the box office, Tremors went on to become a huge hit on home video, television, and the Internet.

Don't think Tremors is poorly regarded. Everyone I know who's seen it (and isn't my wife) loves it. 7/10 on IMDB and 80-odd % on Rotten Tomatoes.

Best (knowing) b-movie ever.

That film is brilliant, I really like it.

Watched it last night - funniest film of the year!!

Utterly random - like a weird mix of Grand Budapest Hotel, Logans Run and Father Ted

Genius 🙂

Ahem eh OK Pretty in Pink.

I watched Pretty in Pink recently and thought it was rather good. I don't normally go for the 80's films too.

I recently watched The Cobbler on netflix. I am no movie buff but I really liked it, so did my wife. I thought Adam Sandler played a really good more serious character and I loved the storyline too. I just looked it up for the reviews and found that it bombed when it came out and was a complete flop! I was genuinely surprised to find that out.

I don't ever look at reviews or anything before I watch a film - if I enjoy I enjoy and no-one else is going to tell me otherwise!

Star Wars Episodes 1-3

Seemingly universally hated but I watched ALL the films over the last week and they are way better than I expected. Out of both trilogies together "Jedi" is probably the worst due to muppet overload although the story is still strong.
Yes yes Jah jah..but he's no more annoying than an Ewok.

Shoot 'Em Up - dispenses with the whole notion of plot and is just people chasing and shooting other people. Chase, shoot, shoot, chase, murder with carrot, crappy dialogue, more chasing, more shooting.

Gregory's Girl - John Gordon Sinclair minds me of myself at that age.

The Wanderers - Vastly superior to the often acclaimed The Warriors

Bad Boys - Sort of Yank version of Scum with a young Sean Penn (not the Will Smith one)

Hudson Hawk - Just because.

I see someone mentioned Doc Savage - I'll bet they won't be making the movie of A Feast Unknown, the book by Philip José Farmer that has Doc Savage and Tarzan in it; they'd have to make some pretty savage cuts to get past the censors!
