Screwfix Mountfield one - usually starts first time. If i prime it 6-8 times it starts and runs then cuts out. JUst replaced all fuel anyway with fresh and still doing it. Guess is filter or fuel supply - total noob so before i take it apart wondered best place to start !
Espares have some good video's on what to do: https://www.espares.co.uk/advice/howto/how-to-fix-a-petrol-lawnmower-that-wont-start
Blocked air filter? Take it off and see if it runs or just get a new one to rule it out.
If it's a Mountfield it's probably a Briggs and Stratton. Things to check / change
- Air Filter
- Fuel Filter
- Spark Plugs
- Carb Diaphragm and Gasket
Might need oil change but I don't think this would cause the symptoms you described. B&S engines really easy to work on loads of videos on youtube etc.
With mine it's usually the air filter. As has been said above, remove it and see if it runs. It's amazing what a difference it makes.
Take off the air filter and catalyser and the engine will rev its nuts off; you'll get the lawn cut much quicker and have time for a cold beer in the shed before she realises and starts nagging you to put those shelves up.
If it's a Briggs and Stratton there are cheap kits via eBay for plug, carb diaphragm , filters and such.
I had similar issues with my B&S Mountfield, sorted with a spares kit.
Fuel tank breather blocked.
As all said above. I just replaced my air filter, spark plug and diaphram last week for about £10 and renewed the oil. Took about 30 mins following YouTube. Running dead good now and simple to do. Not sure what my issue was as i just did the lot, but for the cheapness of bits/ time taken I just went the whole hog.
Check the cap on the spark plug isn’t coming loose, that’s what has happened to mine a few weeks back
My Honda did this exact thing a few years ago. I forgot to drain the tank over the winter. Carb was full of gunge so could be a good starting point. It still did it even after changing the fuel ( i hoped it would dissolve the gunge) so I had to clean the carb out.
