We life in fairly rural area with no fibre planned yet , currently on BT both kids on xbox’s And moaning about lag.
What options if any do I have to improve speed?
Kick them outside on their bikes?
Move house.
Like data's flashlights in the Goonies there are ways to improve it..... But doesn't last long.
If you have 4g then you can get a commercialised 4g package but you'll burn through their data packages and it will cost ££££ to keep buying data.
Basic package with 20gb was 35 quid when I looked at it , being in Scotland I could get grants etc to cover the cost of fitting.
There are a number of local wireless broadband networks. Worth checking if you can get coverage from any of them. Probably not cheap, but there may be grants available for installation etc.
I can't get fibre via BT but can via Virgin Media - have you looked into that?
The wireless alternatives to Infinity are unlikely to stop the complaints from the kids trying to play games...only takes a fraction of a delay on your end and you'll be machined gunned full of holes as soon as you respawn 🙂 They all claim even a wifi connection on the end of a superfast connection is no good don't they? LAN cable connection seems to be a requirement even if it needs to be looped over the banisters from the attic room to the downstairs hallway...
Virgin Media in a rural area, hah! They pick and choose the places they know they can make a quick return on investment i.e. heavily populated areas.
Vodafone do 100gb 4g connection for £18.99 per month. Extra 100gb is £15. I have no idea how much data gaming uses.
I might go with the Vodafone if I get a reasonable download speed.
I'm rural too with rubbish broadband .

that would make sense, seeing as it's a business not a chariddy.
What speeds are people averaging now in the UK? When I left Virgin were just upping people to 100 down but upload was still pretty cack. (getting 80/30 here in oz)
In response to aphex.
Rural location (village) 10 miles from nearest 'big' town/city. 50 down, 7-10 up on Openreach infrastructure. Was previously urban on Virgin cable at 80 down, 40 or so up.
Rural super fast broadband..... unless you're where BARN are, ha!
Here on the East Coast of Norfolk, there's a company called Symmetris who do super fast via wifi line of sight, and their speeds are well up there. However, for the likes of where I am, BT Openreach have the monopoly and have no intention of upgrading anything if their return on investment isn't enough to satisfy their directors/shareholders.
Ive figured it doesn't matter which ISP I go with, we're ultimately hampered by the existing infrastructure, which is 3.9 miles to the local exchange and no FTTC, with the last 3/4 mile on overhead copper wires that run through loads of overgrown trees and hedgerows.
1to 2 Mbps is all we can expect, often it runs at less than 1Mbps
15 year old step son in da house who consumes data like it's an infinite resource, despite access restrictions, so all of the 4g packages are unaffordable as his data consumption runs into the 100's per month. On a good note, he's got bored about complaining about the lag and whilst I love him dearly, it's one of the best incentives for him not to loiter here once he's finished school and college 😃

The only deal I’ve found at those prices is from Airtel-Vodafone, specifically for the Channel Islands. Vodafone’s prices for a UK data SIM are considerably higher at £30/m for 50GB.
Ah balls.
We are on the end of a 2.5km copper cable. Speed has improved from 2.5 meg to 4.5 meg over the last 8 years. As I work from home a bit, we managed to get a grant for a second line and a bonding service which aggregated close to 10 meg. That lasted a year and we’ve been paying for it ever since. It’s a shed load of cash for what is still a pretty rubbish speed.
Come October tho - or sometime soon after - we’re getting fibre from Gigaclear. 50meg, £40 a month. More of these schemes rolling out. Government keeps talking about 20 meg+ for 99% of the UK but just pushes the date back.
