Playing pool with my 17 yr old son today, first time I’ve played in years, I broke and potted a spot ( a complete fluke, I have no skill whatsoever). I gave myself a little cheer, but he said that if you break and pot a ball it doesn’t count!

I have no recollection of this as a rule, but I’m happy to be corrected, and even happier still if I’m right and the potting of a ball on the break is legal - I defer to the jury that is STW!

Of course it counts. Certainly in every pub I've ever played.

Probably depends to what rules you are playing but, I've always played that potting stripes or spots meant those were what you were on - unless it was 8 ball rules or whatever it's called.

Course it counts. But you’re shooting that set of balls even if the placements are rubbish.

There are a few sets of rules.

What I used to play when I played a bit with my dad and his work league (30 years ago) was if you pot off the break the table is still open and I think you remain in play as normal and then can play a spot or stripe at will for your next ball/pot.

So if you potted a spot you could still go stripes or spots until the next ball went down and then you are locked.

The only thing I'm not 100% on is whether you stay at the table or not.

Yep this is the rule where i grew up, but local rules may apply 😁

Can confirm, however, more importantly, it's 2 straight and 1 on the black. Now those are 'mens' rules... Or at least were in 1990 in the Shieling, the Briardene, or when I got 7-balled in the Belle Grove...YMMV 😁

He's talking bollocks.

There are any manner of rules for pool, but half of them have been made up by sore losers.

1 on the black

That's bollocks as well. That's never existed as a rule anywhere aside from in the heads of people you're about to beat.

Yeh, but, pissed up 16/17 year olds care not (except getting beer) Especially in 1990 😂

1 shot on the black has been the rule on every table in every pub I've played - Midlands mainly but also on Liverpool, Manchester, London, Brighton....

This is what I recall also. So potting a ball off the break certainly does count 👍 I used to play in my local pool league and it was great fun - few beers then after the games it would be free grub 🙂 Happy days 😁

Makes you on spots. Black in one shot only unless they committed a foul beforehand.

Yes, sorry, this. So to confirm; if you break and pot a spot, you're on spots. If you break, and pot both spots and stripes, then your next immediate pot dictates what happens next. If you miss, then it's still an open table.

Unless local/alternative rules are clearly displayed.  These are the current rules of pool in England.

Black in 1 ? Just as much bhollox as saying the ball down from the break doesn't count.

Glad we've collectively cleared that up beyond all doubt for the OP.  🤣

Now we've covered that shall we come up with a consensus view on what tyres he needs?

😂 absolute minefield

IME no such thing as definitive Pool rules unless you're in an organised league or competition where full rules have been provided.

If im playing with a group of mates I've known 30 plus years we always play if you pot a colour off the break you're that colour. If you pot both colours off the break you choose.

Though I have played people who've said which colour is potted off break is irrelevant its the second shot when you nominate colour.

There are loads of rules variations largely dependent on locality and age of players.

E g.

Only one shot on the black even if a foul has been committed vs Two shots on black if foul has been committed

White in hand - White can be put anywhere on table vs White in hand - White has to be behind the line vs White in hand - White has to be behind the line and played down the table

One of my mates thinks it all went downhill when pool tables stopped having a D!

This is what we played in the 90s.
Also, one shot on the black.
And also, 'two shots don't carry', i.e. if your opponent fouls, and you pot with your first shot after that, you don't carry over the spare shot. Not sure where that last rule came from. Think my mate might have made it up.

I bet you can't find that written down anywhere.

So to confirm; if you break and pot a spot, you’re on spots.

Or you get to nominate.

Or it's still an open table.

Or something else.

Even outside of the realms of pissed up "winner stays on" halfwits there's at least three sets of official rules I know of. And if you're playing spots and stripes rather than reds and yellows then you're in a different world again.

Most pub leagues I've known have been "old rules" Blackball, not Pool.

Also, one shot on the black.

Nonsense.

And also, ‘two shots don’t carry’

Also nonsense.

Not sure where that last rule came from.

I told you this already. Bad losers.

Had your lad been playing pool on his phone? 8Ball Pool app plays to (I think) american rules. So pot on the break and the table is still open for you to choose what to pot next.

He is taking phone rules and applying them to playing dad pool

Potting the black off the break – win or lose?

Technically I'd say that's an instant lose, but in reality it's a waste of a frame so we class the winner as whoever pots all thier last ball first in that case, playing friendly games.

Unless when you're finished its a draw or there's only one frame in it, usualy a few beers have been consumed by that point so its:

If your playing with spots and stripe balls I can see why he's confused if your trying to play English rules with a set of 8 balls

Ha! Pot one ball off the break and you are then spots or strips.

Although it’s my house, my pool table, my rules in this case!
