Daughter and her friend (mid 20’s) are looking at ‘different’ holiday destinations and have been fancying Poland for a while now, under normal circumstances its got a great reputation, Krakow, Tatra’s etc but would it be sensible destination at the present time?
I said I know just the place to ask….
I would say it's no less safe than the rest of Europe at present.
We loved our time in the Tatras - lovely mountains, a LOT less busy on the Slovak side and next time I would go there.
Knowing some the extra units and militaries that are there at present, I'd say it's probably safer than usual! Crack on, they'll be reet.
Things are getting a little tense according to my Polish relatives as the government isn't coming up with what it promised in terms of help for people taking in refugees. I don't think we'll be going this year.
I wouldn’t hesitate, half of NATO is there at the moment so it it all goes Pete tong a safer place to be 🙂
Bookings are down as people got the jitters so hotels etc could do with a bit of income.
Plus they are dealing with most of the refugees so I personally would not want to cancel a booking.
Mrs just came back from Warsaw, would have gone but for covid.
Thanks all, my thoughts were similar to yours Mr Smith, they’ll probably appreciate the tourist spending!
My partner is Polish and was back home last month, we're going again next month and again in the Summer. There were a lot of worries soon after the invasion that Poland would be next especially if you have male family members aged in late teens upwards who would be conscripted. These have reduced as the war has dragged on. The Polish people have been unbelievably generous and kind to Ukrainian refugees however there are inevitable stories amplified by the right wing of Ukrainians taking advantage of the generosity, other migrants pretending to be Ukrainian who aren't which when combined with insufficient support /action from the government is creating tensions. If you're able to talk with Ukrainians there then what you hear of their experience is not pleasant listening.
There is also a historical "animosity" between the 2 nations as parts of Ukraine used to be Poland (Lviv for example). There has been some Ukrainian migration into Poland previously which had led to similar issues found with Polish people moving to UK (they're taking our jobs etc).
Personally I don't have any worries about my family safety in Poland and love the country.
The only issue we have realised is that if something does kick off when we're there then the UK government would hopefully try quite hard to get me out of a warzone but wouldn't help my partner as she only has "leave to remain" and isn't a UK citizen so would have to rely on her EU passport to get her into Germany and I'd have to try and collect her from there. I think the risk of this is quite small as Russia hasn't got the capacity to start another war
Dont go.
chewkw says that if you do, you are escalating the situation and world war 3 will happen.
You don't need that even on a good day.
I would have no more worries than my children going to France on their own (I would still worry but it's in the job description).
Seems daft to me, pick somewhere else.
Note, I spent +20 years travelling for business including war 'zones', I spent a few weeks stuck in the USA after 9/11 for example plus numerous other delays/re-routes due to stuff like SARS, volcano's etc etc - but I always had my corporate credit card to cover ANY costs and had no 'panic' about getting back for work.
