My son is seven. Over the last couple of years we've seen an increase in his interest in Pokemon cards, but it's recently gone from 'interest' to 'overwhelming obsession'. It is literally all he talks about - every conversation is framed in the context of which Pokemon does what.

We tend to just ignore it on the whole - "yes, dear" being the usual response - but he is in constant competition with his friends over who has the best card. In a moment of weakness, and as a reward for a good school report, I bought him a "Mega Charizard EX Y" card from eBay as it was "the best, biggest, most powerful, most awesome card ever".

He's now found out about one that's even bigger and better - but costs £45 for a box of playing cards! I have no intention of paying that but in the meantime I have to suffer the incessant chatter about how great this 'special EX' something or other is.

Parents of STW, please tell me he grows out of it? 🙂

(PS he doesn't know about Pokemon GO and I want to keep it that way!!)

He sounds like he's out of touch, the current craze is fidget spinners with ceramic bearings.

My son (7) started on cards last year when he got some at a party. He didn't play with them, just traded them until we baulked at how much they are for a pack. He too is encyclopaedic in his knowledge of what evolves form what and whose special move is the best in any given situation.

We ended up playing a bit of Pokemon Go and he's now more or less moved on from the cards. I must admit, apart from the downside of losing possession of my phone most of the time, it's quite fun and has encouraged him to go out for long walks before bed to 'hatch eggs', 'get on a stop', and ' do a raid'. I may have even been known to nip out at lunchtime to hit a few pokestops myself, but I would deny it point blank if you were to ask me face to face.

Oh and he also has a fidget spinner - just one mind.

He will grow out of it.

(my son, nearly twenty) can tell you all the spells in every HPotter book with unnerving accuracy... 😆 But he's other wise very normal.

My son is seven. Over the last couple of years we've seen an increase in his interest in bikes, but it's recently gone from 'interest' to 'overwhelming obsession'. It is literally all he talks about - every conversation is framed in the context of which groupset does what.

We tend to just ignore it on the whole - "yes, dear" being the usual response - but he is in constant competition with his friends over who has the most bling bike. In a moment of weakness, and as a reward for a good school report, I bought him an "Dura Ace" derailleur from eBay as it was "the best, biggest, most powerful, most awesome derailleur ever".

He's now found out about one that's even bigger and better called Campagnolo Super Record Aniversary edition- but costs £2500 for a box of bike parts! I have no intention of paying that but in the meantime I have to suffer the incessant chatter about how great this 'special edition' something or other is.

Parents of PTW, please tell me he grows out of it?

You never know, could be quite the investment. (unlikely now though...)

He will grow out of it.

Or he'll take up Magic and become a neckbeard.

My son (now 12) was the same about Match Attax football cards. Totally obsessed. He's grown out of it now but it took a while and we still have (at a guess) 2 or 3 thousand cards in the house - his pals dumped all their old cards on us as they went off it and he kept the torch lit.

Yup, we've got the Pokemon discussions, less so this month than last, but we've had a good 6 months of it MegapidgeotEX ! etc.

This month we're more Terraria and DanTDM along with Stampy.... but it's all good fun.

Has anyone actually tried to play the game? We've tried a couple of times, but it all descends into farce/boredom after about 10 minutes...

Until they release something biggerer and betterer...

It sounds a bit like the World of Warcraft model. Players spend months grinding the same battles over and over in the hope of a rare loot drop, some weapon or component to make some armour or something. Then the new expansion is released and you've replaced all your legendary gear with trash drops inside of ten minutes. Same shit, bigger numbers.

I, er, was nearly UK champion in the first year it came out- got some free cards at an event. But at the last minute I realised that beating a whole load of kids was probably a bit off, so I took a dive and let some wee prick from London win instead. I assume it's still the same game anyway.

Back when I was a kid (is Pokemon really that old already?)

It's the same gameplay as a lot of similar more grown up games, for a bit more fun try Munchkin.

Ban any pokemon talk and provide physically and mentally stimulating alternatives as much as is possible..
My 7 year old is a total junkie for anything going and offering something better to do is the only way to derail him.

He seems to be showing signs of improvement at the moment.

Objectively, what's wrong with Pokemon?

It's just so boring.

He spends quite a lot of time inventing and drawing new pokemon at the moment which is creative at least.

Have you ever considered you might not be the target market?

(to be fair, I watched the entire first season of the cartoon while in hospital, it was ****ing amazing. Coincidentally, I was absolutely off my face on morphine. I didn't really get all of the details but it was something to do with a bike thief and his pet rat)

My son has both Pokemon and Match Attax cards, Pokemon are a lot cheaper I think and the footy ones presumably change each season so best kept away from surely. I catch Pokemon on my phone as the hotel I stay in is a Pokestop and he likes seeing what I catch. I got this one called Blastoise which all his friends want to look at.
