there must be others out there in the same boat. i work by myself and listen to podcasts all day long, but every time i start a sander or the hoover i either stop the pod or miss some.
im well aware of the ear defenders with bluetooth connection etc, but i don't want to be wearing them all day long: its 10 to 25% of my time im using powertools probably, and i like to be able to hear the world more or less normally in between. its also often fairly start-stop, eg plunge saw cuts with rail set up in between.
so anyone found a good solution?
bone conduction headphones? with ear defenders?
noise cancelling? tools often not that noisy.
or some of the defenders that are actually amazing and you want to keep on all day?
i usually use the speaker on my phone. i dont get on with ear buds oy old style in ear phones
ta
Quieter tools?
Noise cancelling works extremely well on constant noise like a hoover. You can get ear bud or over ear Bluetooth ones, I'd strongly recommend.
Oh and you can normally tap a button to turn on and off the noise cancelling if you want to
I had noise cancelling headphones (Sennheiser) on for much of the time in the workshop. Was good for most work including sanding, table saw or panel saw.
Other option was a set of decent 3M ear defenders with a Bluetooth earpiece in one ear.
With the latter I could use the router/table router or the planer and still hear my podcast.
Good quality ear defenders are more important that good quality headphones or earpieces.
To add... Just picked up some bone conducting ones from Shokz, but I'm no longer in the workshop.
I tend to listen to chit-chat type podcasts. The sort where you can miss a big chunk and really doesn't matter. There's loads of them. Then save ones with better content for quieter jobs. Tbh I don't like to drown out too much machine noise. It can be a useful indicator to how well an operation in going or if the tool is cutting right
I've been using IsoTunes ear buds for a while now. Bluetooth ear defenders that also play through external noise until the safe limit is reached rather than using noise cancelling.
Often don't use the Bluetooth to listen to anything, and always get asked about them by colleagues when I don't take them out to have a conversation.
I don't use Bluetooth ear defenders but regular Bluetooth headphones.
They're very comfortable and block noise out very well.
I wear them in my job as a furniture maker most of the day, every day.
I don't tend to use the noise cancelling as they are pretty good as they are.
I think headphones will tend to be more comfortable and less bulky but of course you need to be sure that they are blocking out harmful noise.
I have gone down a rathole of power tool YouTube recently and I've noticed one of the presenters who does a lot of woodworking always has his apple earpods in when running tools.
I tend to have earbuds in to listen to podcasts while I work, Jabra elite 75t. They have decent noise cancellation that just clicks on and off at the touch of a button. Works well for quite a few tools, but they're small enough that I can just chuck proper ear defenders on over the top when needed, and keep listening.
My wife has fancier Bose earbuds that are much bigger (better sound & battery life) but ear defenders press on them hard so she can't do the same.
bone conduction headphones? with ear defenders?
Works OK with a chainsaw
I too have the privilege of working alone and listening to stuff all day most days.
I get on best with Bluetooth ones which are wired together and sit on the neck rather than individual buds.
The in ear bit is much neater and comfy in my experience. I have one in most of the time, then for noisy stuff pop the other in and a set of basic defenders over that.
Works fine even doing very noisy stuff like diamond cutting.
care to elaborate reeksy?
yes I'm not looking for something to use in the workshop. i too like to hear what's going on if table saw etc. and i have big speakers 😀.
and as i said i dont get on with earbuds, tho I'm sure they work well.
over ear noise cancelling sound good then for sander/ hoover etc .
any recommendations? obvs something cheap and cheerful as for site use!
I usually have a speaker on, but sometimes I use airpods pro as for music and I can then stick a pair of over-ear defenders on top
