I've got a long drive coming up in a coupe of days, and would appreciate some current reccomendations for podcasts. Anything along the following lines:-

Cycling (mtb, road, cross..)
Business
Tech

I realised they are broad spectrums.... but would appreciate any insights into high quality and current podcasts as it's been a while since I've actively listened to any.

My go to in those categories are:

MTB: https://www.downtimepodcast.com/
Tech: https://darknetdiaries.com/

Road cycling - https://lifeinthepeloton.com/category/podcast/
CX - https://cyclocross.social/podcast/

Can’t think of any more at the moment.

A lot of cycling podcasts are pretty dull.
The Cycling Podcast is the obvious one.
Bobby and Jens can be entertaining enough too.

Tech is a big spectrum so depends what you're looking for I guess.
Darknet already mentioned can have some interesting stories, about the darker side of the Web, social engineering, stuff like that.
Lex Fridman covers loads of topics and delves deep into tech and science, along with other things.

13 minutes to the moon is all about the Appllo 11 and 13 missions. It isn’t strictly tech, but it does talk a lot about it, albeit 1960’s tech. It’s an incredible podcast serious though.

This. I’m not sure it’s safe listening to most of the mtb podcasts whilst driving.  Sometimes if the guest is really entertaining they work, but a lot could be summarised with:

”Let’s spend two hours talking back through every pedal stroke of your 20 year downhill career… but without any images of the good bits or the crashes”

Babbage is a good Science/tech podcast from The Economist. The latest is an interview with an AI robot and pretty interesting.
The one before that looks at the potion they are developing which provides all the benefits of alcohol with none of the downsides.

Sounds good.

Appreciate all the recommends. Keep them coming!

What areas of business and tech are you into?

I was purposefully keeping vague to see what comes up. I quite like it when Spotify goes off piste at the end of an album and I discover new stuff. That's what I'm hoping for from this. Some good stuff so far 🙂

Making Up The Numbers, Downtime, some of the Pinkbike ones and the new Sleeper Co. are all decent MTB ones.

Am I allowed to mention my own? Recorded an episode today with a bike designer/brand owner. Will be published as soon as I get chance to edit it.

Last episode discussing prep for The Dales Divide

Probably the best podcast series I've listened to.

I’ve just realised that no one’s mentioned the obvious one.

What about the Singletrack podcast?

A couple of the recent episodes have been very good, well worth a listen.

A bit niche, but there's a great motocross podcast called the Whiskey Throttle Show - mostly it's great if you like old-school motocross and want to hear from the old names (although I would give De Coster a swerve - not a natural talker, that dude...), but you might have heard of Travis Pastrana, and that's a great episode - he can talk! 🙂 There are the occasional hokey adverts (skip the first two minutes) but it's otherwise hours of a great, knowledgable, well-briefed host (David Pingree) chatting to one of the most likeable people on earth. 🙂

Never Strays Far?

Rambling cycling-based chat with Ned Boulting, David Millar and Pete Kennaugh.  I expect you'd need to be into road racing, at least as a spectator, somewhat but I like the way the conversation meanders around.

and

More or Less: Behind the stats. Radio 4 podcast with Tim Harford that comes up with some great insights into how stats are used and abused in the news/adverts/etc.

Stuff You Should Know. Brilliant at striking the level between know it all, and encouraging further research.
Stuff They Don’t Want To to Know. For the conspiracy realist. Somewhat America leaning , but enough there to entertain.
End of the World- Josh Clark. Should be on the curriculum.
Socially Distant Sports Bar. It makes me laugh & think fondly of my playing / racing days.
Chatabix - it’s just daft, but all the better for it.
Sorry, none of the hove meet your criteria, but it’s what works for me.

What the F*** is going on - Mark Steel's alternative look at the weeks news
Looking sideways - surfing/snowboard based but other guests include riders, climbers and conservationists

Bloody terrifying at times. Especially the episode covering biolabs

Stuff You Should Know is my go-to. Takes a couple of episodes to get into it iirc, just because they've been working together such a long time.

The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry are also usually interesting, but no SYSK

I'm not a monster podcast on BBC sounds has been really interesting

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p08yblkf?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

Series 1 about an American family who went to Syria with Isis and series 2 is the Shamima Begum story. Series 1 is the better of the two so far.

Other ones I listen to include
No such thing as a fish - facts and trivia
Diary of a CEO - good interviews (Jimmy Carr and Masie Williams have been good)
Wild Ride with Steve O - silly stuff
The rest is politics - polictics
Parenting Hell - dad chat
The ride companion - silly stuff and bike chat
Downtime - more serious bike/race stuff

bike ones I don't think have been mentioned: Sleeper podcast is pretty good 1st couple of episodes with Reece Wilson and Innes Graham.
and The ride Companion. a bit hit and miss, but occasionally some very interesting interviews - eg Sam Pilgrim and Bernard Kerr.

The sweary STW podcast is a good one, I always get confused as to whether the two are linked, is one called STW and the other Making up the numbers? Anyway, the one where they have George, Jack and Emilie fronting it.

Off piste from your original request but I enjoyed the Trojan Horse Affair. Quite shocking as it is actually real, but a good listen
If you haven't come across the daddy of all podcasts the 'Serial' podcasts and the spin offs are good

Finally into the realms of fiction I enjoyed Blackout with Rami Malek recently.

I’m in the middle of a long drive, and enjoying this series 🙂

Listened to a couple of the guardian  Black Box episodes about Ai too.

Really enjoying Empire at the minute - lots of names so I struggle to remember who's who at times, but Anita Anand and William Dalrymple talk so much interesting stuff and sound like they're having so much fun that I find it great just to have on in the background even if I'm not actively listening to it. 🙂

Picked up a couple of new to me podcast series recently:

Shell Game - about a guy who clones his own voice and uses Chat Gpt to interact with people. All good fun when he’s using it to mess about with scammers, but then very frightening to realise this tech is going to be used by the scammers against us.

How to Invent a country - R4 show with a great back catalogue. Particularly like the Scandinavia episodes, which I didn’t know much about.
