Asked our local plumber to supply and fit a kitchen mixer tap. He ordered the tap and told us it would be £185. I emailed him to ask if he could find a cheaper tap and he knocked £20 off.

Is he having my eyes out?

How long is a piece of string.

Cheap tap - £50
Dear tap - £500

Labour to remove old and install new - 1 hour plus he has to go and get the tap and then drive to your house. What if he needs to install iso-valves?What if he can't turn the water off to the current tap?

That price doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

£100 for a mixer tap is pretty average. I swapped ours out the other month, took several hours as I had to drain the system, redo pipework (new tap had different length tails), so had to move the existing isolation valves. £185 would seem like good value.

Taps can be a real PITA, especially sink taps. Kitchen fitters seem to delight in making access to them nigh on impossible.

The mantra of ' buy cheap, buy twice' is especially true with taps. Asking for a cheaper tap is foolish IMO.

Considering all that is and could be involved, the quote seems pretty reasonable and you have the option of diy if you're feeling too aggrieved.

Buy it yourself from a really good range. IKEA (yes) have a 25yr warranty on theirs. My bathroom mixer from there is great. Although too late for the OP.

It's called idiot tax 😀

Do it yourself.

It's really not very hard, but involves YOUR effort.... how much is that worth?

If you can answer that, you'll know if 165 quid is too much ??

If you are unsure, get another quote from a local plumber.

Quote doesn't seem too bad to me.

🙂

Idiot tax ... it just a little light hearted saying.

And I pay it myself many times ... simple car servicing ... or when the computer freezes up/runs slow and I have to get it fixed.

But to say your home insurance would be invalid really is idiotic 😆
