Replace a pump valve on the house side of my boiler pump.
It’s a 1 ½ inch x 28mm valve on a Combi boiler in a the ground floor of a 3 storey town house. The valve is letting bye a small amount of clean water.
Boiler is vclose to the back door…. Guessing I’ve got to drain the whole system… I got 5 rads and one warm air type low level long 70’s style job (sorry can’t remember the exact name of those things)
Am I right in thinkking it's the refilling of the system that's going to cause me the headache/ be the reason I should get someone to do it.
Thanks Gents
Yes its a gate valve.
Would you be so kind as to explain re-packing please
(googling as we speak)
Unscrew gland nut and slide it up the shank of the spindle. Buy a roll of PTFE tape and liberally wrap it around the thread of the gland nut and the shank of the spindle. Tighten gland nut back on to tap body.
The gland nut acts like a Stuffing Box. Fnar.
EDIT: and before Bear comes in and corrects me, that picture is not a gate valve but a jumper stop valve, but the rising spindle design through the gland nut is the same idea.
Just try tightening the gland nut (!!) if it's like the one above, that usually sorts it, it squashes the existing packing that's in there a bit. Don't tighten it too much though.
Yep tighten it up last night 1/4 turn... still letting by.
Maybe I'm being over cautious, should I give it a proper tighten?
But re-packing sounds easy enough... (I had found it via google)
Cheers guys... You're the best !?!
Gents ... an update and further help needed, if you'd be so kind.
The valve is this one http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/221357/?source=123_75
(sorry can't paste a pic)
And it's the large nut behind the gland nut that is leaking... the body nut ??
Is it possible to close the valve and undo the body nut without flooding the place... so that I can re-tape it. (in Stoner's diagram above that doesn't look possible)
This valve is quite hard to get at with a spanner... I've tighend it up as much as I can, but I'm chewing up the nut a little as I do.
The thing is it's letting by such a little amount... maybe one drop every 5 mins... Grrr
Assuming its very similar design to this
http://www.plumbteamltd.co.uk/stopcock.html piccy 4
looks like a full drain and a new PTFE washer or tape piccy 8
However, for the brave the second to last picture show a LIVE repair... ...last picture shows a flood 😯
