To say that I feel like all my Christmases are about to come at once is an understatement.

Q1 for starters - please recommend a dog whistle.

I can see lot's of dog related questions coming up.
I was brought up with dogs but never had my own until .... a few weeks time ... all being well

so say Hi to Ellie.

Ellie

Freedom of speech seems to be quite a good one.

Hi Ellie! She's a stunner. Going against the spirit of the forum as evidenced above, I will try to be helpful

Acme I use a 210.5 (refers to the tone of the whistle).

Buy a few because you will lose them, and get orange ones for the same reason

Good luck!

Ellie's lovely but, unless you're going to be herding sheep with her, do you need a whistle? If you can whistle, she'll hear you.

I use an Acme whistle, recommended. Doesn’t matter which pitch you get, so long as you stick with it when you lose it, replace it because it’s a filthy mess etc. I trained mine to return to three short blasts - I think that’s easier to distinguish and repeat when necessary (often).

Acme 210 1/5 here as well. Buy a couple so you have a spare

To those that don't understand, the sound of a whislte travels further than voice without sounding so loud. So when you can't see your dog, whistle works better than bellowing her name. Especially good when other people are around. Two short blasts and my dog (mostly) comes rocketing back. I wish I had taught one blast to stop and two for recall though, that is a handy skill.

Ellie is lovely, congratulations

Whistle is much easier to hear if it's windy or the dog is a distance from you.

Acme 210.5 here too but any pitch will do as long as you buy 2 (so when you lose one, you know which pitch you bought first time around and can replace it with the same one!).

Acme. 210.5 for spaniels, 211.5 for Labradors.

Be consistent, and don’t blast their ears off in the house. Mine sits to a pip, or if we’re out on foot a long soft slow note.
Long blast for stop. Two pips for look at me and go in the direction I’m pointing, a series of trills for search/look around you in a figure 8, three pips for recall.

OP here.

Acme 210.5 it will be. Thx all.

Another reason for the 'Can't you whistle !!!' gang, is consistency with the hole family.

Mind that theory falls over when you go on a STW dog walkers rally

Just be aware that if you get a 210.5 you'll have the same as everyone else.... so when they blow their whistle Ellie might head that way!!
So it maybe an idea to get a different pitch.

That said...... Acme 210.5 !!

Surprisingly the dogs can tell the difference. I've been at places where there have been half a dozen spaniels being worked with 210.5s and the same number of Labs being worked with 211.5s, and the nuanced difference in the way the handlers use the whistles means there are no mix-ups.

Where the **** do you people walk your dogs where there are so many different people all with dog whistles?
I swear in 12 years of taking my dog (r.i.p. Hopey) out, I reckon I saw 2, maybe 3, people with dog whistles!

The countryside? I've seen more people with dog whistles today then, than you in your 12 years. And yesterday and every other day! Black lab, cocker or Springer spaniel are standard issue round here, and everyone gives it large on the Acme 210.5!

I walk my spaniel in the fells and the woodlands nearby. In my experience a good proportion of people round here do use a whistle (it is less than 50% though!)
And yes - another Acme 210.5 user 🙂

Is their a dog whistle available that will make a mut run for the hills, sick of having deal with scattered sheep sindrome

The countryside?

That's what you call your local park eh ? 😆

I always used me fingers anyway. Retrieve that girl from many a mile away.
Still, if people need an excuse to buy something.

Wouldn't a wolf whistle be a bit more flattering?

My Karelian Bear Dog doesn't have any response at all to an Acme 211.5 when outdoors - his ears don't even twitch! He is very good with me whistling him.

I'm going to try the Acme silent/adjustable dog whistle and adjust it to a tone he hopefully responds to.

There’s always the Fox 40, allegedly the loudest whistle available, designed for referees at American football games with 80,000 screaming fans to carry across.
Very good for attracting the attention of dopey peds strolling along in the middle of country roads as well.
