I’m buying my son a PS5 for Christmas. We’ve left it late because he’s procrastinated for the past month about what he wants, thankfully they seem to be available again now!

Anyway, being a child of the 90’s and not owning a PlayStation since the PS3 days I wondered if with the new console you can download old ps1,2,3,4 games for it. Would be an added bonus if I could download and play some old titles from my childhood when the nippers at school! Purely for nostalgic reasons you understand.

The answer is, sort of!

You'll need PS+ to access stuff and the top tier is supposed to be the best for accessing the back catalogue. I had the same idea as you, but I haven't got round to exploring what's available. There appears to be a fair few grumbles with the service however.

I keep returning to Rez, updated for PS4, Tetris Effect and this year have played Olli Olli World a lot.  I need to get round to the latest oddworld game.

More dedicated folk will answer your question better no doubt.

It's a great bit of kit!

As I understand it Ps4 games play ok, but as said above you need the top level of PS+ subscription to access (a limited, but sizeable) back catalogue of PS3/2/1 games. You can’t just pop a ps2 disc in (if not a digital version) and expect it to work. It will not. Just gone through research on this as have also got one for my two as a joint present (joint with me, ha ha…)

Yep, so to play online you need as a minimum, PS+ "Essential" which is £50 a year.

This gets you 3 free games a month, plus cloud game saves etc.

The next level, "Extra" up gets you access to a decent number of PS4 and PS5 games for £84 a year.

Then "Premium" for £100 a year gets you access to PS2, PS2 and PS3 classics, game streaming.

Best in mind you never pay the full amount, for instance there was a 25% off deal a while back, and even then you get buy with PSN vouchers which you can get with 10-12% off.

Just the monthly games are worth the price on its own tbh.

I've got the PS+ Extra package at £84 a year. This month, the free 'PS5 game' was a remastered version of the Mass Effect trilogy. I'm in heaven, I may not go outside again till Spring. I reckon it's worth the fee for the monthly free games, but it also gives you a large back catalogue of 100+ PS4 and PS5 titles

We have premium because I accidently bought PS Now instead of PS + last Christmas, then when the new tiers where announced ended up on Premium.. I was going to drop to Extra this year but the black Friday deal and as above discount on vouchers meant I paid £65 for Premium for 2023.

Actually, I think there are a score or so of games that can be played online without a Playstation plus subscription. I believe they are the 'free' games, such as warzone, Apex Legends, fall guys etc.

If it's anything like the Xbox you'd be mad to pay full whack for the subscription. Have a look on cdkeys or electronicfirst for codes (I've used both for years).

Make sure you set it up before Xmas day, as it will no doubt want a few updates that will take ages on Xmas day, as everyone is doing the same.

I personally think the old games should remain as memories.
The extra tier is the best value for money in my opinion.
Epic games I've played are death stranding, horizon zero dawn, stray, returnal, god of war, death loop plus many more I've forgotten.

Daveylad has it. The new generation is way better, going back to PS3 or earlier just for nostalgia. They look so old and dated as well as playing like that it’s not worth the cost.
