Rewatching after a longtime hiatus.
Dated(editing?) But absolutely awesome?
agree
Didn't like it.
Typical Oliver Stone hyperbole and histrionics.
Mind you, not seen it for years either - will stick it on later.
I am watching conan the barbarian.........AWESOME.... 8)
Conans all ****in' and swords 8)
Rusty- worth it
Seen it so many times I could play a part in it. Brilliant film.
Watched Commando again recently. Sure it wasn't that funny the first time around?
Have a look for 'Commando: The Insane Version' on youtube.
🙂
Who dares wins has only 74 days left on love film 😀
Along with 'The Assault' - a factual French plane hostage story
'9th Company' - based on fact, Russians in Afghan
and 'Brotherhood' - a bloody amazing south Korean film about the war
Heretic. You cant slag off Commando. Sorry.
Heretic.
WRONG
Best film ever.
I know that scene 😆
Dated
I thought Platoon was powerful but ultimately a bit overblown.
As my friend Al would say in a tricky situation
"what would sergent Barnes do now?"
I thought Platoon was powerful but ultimately a bit overblown.
Three of us went to see it when it came out, after a day shift - two of us were gob-smacked, one thought it was crap.
In the mood for a 'war' film? Watch Red Angel - I pretty much staggered out of the cinema.
As a kid I thought Platoon was great - until I watched the headtrip one starring Charlie's dad. 😀
Great soundtrack but it's no apocalypse or full metal jacket.
I love the smell of GT85 in the morning, smells like victory...
Lebanon is one of the most powerful war films I have seen.
Is that the one with Goldie Hawn in?
I didn't feel it was overblown. If anything, Apocalypse Now is more overblown IMO. Second half of Full Metal nowhere near as good as the first.
Watched Platoon recently with the wife. She thought Barnes and Elias were the same person. Sort of defeats the point of the film.

Both are overblown and self indulgent IMO. That's not to say they aren't good in other ways.
Lebanon? Cheers will buy tomorrow

I remember writing an essay along those lines as part of one of the 'arty' modules I took at university - I haven't seen Platoon since then but I seem to remember part of premise was they represented inner turmoil, or mortality, or some bollocks like that.
I'm still blown away whenever I watch the opening beach landing scene of Saving Private Ryan. Actually gives me a chill to imagine having to walk into that hail of machine gun fire.
Bigearedbiker read about the My Lai massacre.
I am watching conan the barbarian.........AWESOME....
I cried when his mum got killed.
Yeah, I imagine it might feel a bit overblown watching it today. I always wonder why Kevin Dillon (Bunny) didn't do much more as an actor after that movie. Always liked his performance.

I have storyboards for that on my study wall.
True story.

SPOILERS FFS !!
Study wall?

You are a Tory MP and I claim my £5.
(No doubt I've paid more than that in taxes to have it cleaned)
Agreed, Brotherhood is a great film.
I enjoyed Platoon, but I prefer Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter is also class, although it takes a bit to get going.
I still need to watch the 2nd half of The Thin Red Line, I fell asleep first time around!
Saving Private Ryan always brings me to tears after the opening 20 minutes, how could they ruin a film that starts of that well?
Always felt that Apocalypse Now, Casualties of War and The Deer Hunter were stories that just happened to have the Vietnam war in the background.
Full Metal Jacket is the only Vietnam movie shot entirely in the UK.
Who Dares Wins is awesome.
A year or so ago work related stuff led me to be spending the week at War and Peace, a huge military show, along with a few other people, an ex sas range rover team car and a massive pile of 'black kit'.
By the 3rd day of the show we were going a bit mad, and relieved the tedium by driving around the show that evening, followed by the local villages, dressed in black kit inc respirators in the RR with the theme music to Who Dares Wins playing full blast. I guess you had to be there, but it's incredibly hard to breath in an S10i respirator when you are wetting yourself laughing...
Who Dares Wins is awesome.
I'll dig out storyboard photos later. My Grandfather did them. 😉

Agreed. It's like they shot their wad too early and the rest of the film is a bit of an after thought. The beach landing is awesome though.
Being ex forces and having worked quite close to US troops in the 80's, I thought Platoon was an immense film, getting right to the core of what it was almost certainly like in 'nam.
It was and possibly still is the best film I've ever seen!
(just in front of 'Grease') 🙂

Especially those magic bullets that keep traveling at wounding speeds underwater! Bullets shot from air into water rapidly decelerate within just a few feet. In fact, when your being shot at in the water the military SOP is to dive, because just a small amount of water is enough to save you. At the angles involved in film, the bullets likely wouldn't have even entered the water but would have ricocheted off the surface. Great opening scene, but ruined for me.
didn't realise until recently that the basic story line of saving private ryan is true. i.e. the 3 brothers are killed and the forth is taken out of the line so his mother doesn't lose all 4 sons.

Which squadron were you in? Took some lads from 1 out riding in the Alps a few years back.
Saving Private Ryan
Why do I always end up thinking of the pawn spoof whenever I hear of it?
Saving Private Ryan - I seem to remember a light-hearted comedy moment involving a dismembered arm?

Me too. 😳

Damn you Tucker, that's blown it 🙂 Sometimes you gotta just turn a blind eye to these things and enjoy it as a whole.
Platoon was good,
Full metal jacket was better
Apocalypse now was even better
The deer hunter is the best
but, Tour of Duty was brilliant, and on every week!!!
