Mine is from Go Outdoors. I think it came with a little vent tube so I'm assuming it's a vented one. As such it may need topping up, right? It's definitely filled with liquid.

But I can't find where to fill it. There's a label that says 'lift label for maintenance' and there's nothing underneath. It may be possible to prise a cover off but it doesn't feel like it wants to come off.

It will only hold 10.6V no matter how long I charge it. It hasn't been run down any lower than that to my knowledge or run fully flat. Last time I had similar a top up helped a lot.

Also at 10.6 it's likely that you have a totally dead cell and 10.6 is the remaining cells with a full charge

Also what do you mean you've never had it lower than 10.6 - anything below 12.4 and ultimately 12v is detrimental to battery life and contributory to cell sulphation

most modern batteries are sealed service and do not get topped up.

It's almost certainly a sealed one - the vent is to release pressure if it's over charged / abused.

You can sometimes prise the covers off to top them up, but I doubt it would be worth it.

It's dead.

It has never been drained lower than about 12V in use, without load. A damage threshold of 12V seems rather high, most people say 10 or so. It it was left for a few months after it was used though, seems that somehow it's either self discharged too low or something else has happend.

(From the Powersonic technical manual)

The "safe" level of discharge for typical leisure type batteries is ~50% capacity (so about 12.3 volts off load). They can be taken lower, but it reduces their life. Taking them down to 12V is Not Good.

In any case, they *need* to be fully re-charged ASAP afterwards, or they will sulphate and die.

Leaving it a few months in a very discharged state (~20%?) is almost guaranteed to kill it.

Even if not used, there is some self discharge that means they need to be given a top-up charge every month or two to prevent degradation.
