OK hive mind, one for the collective.
We have a new build estate currently under planning, and it seems to be sneaking through planning quickly and quietly. Im not against it despite the fact its on the current open field next to my house, id rather it not but needs must and all that.
What I am averse to is the road network. Currently i am the last house in a nice quiet close. The new estate of 500 houses will have main entrances off the main road north and south. The current outline planning docs show this, but they also show roads finishing very close to where my close ends (there is a hammerhead there just begging to be knocked throuh) and another close the same round the corner. We have a public footpath there currently.
The obvious concern for me is them knocking the road through, not only affecting my nice quiet end of close spot but values, and it would turn it into a dangerous rat run. There are already too many cars parked on the streets around.
Can they just turn a close into a road and how much chance have we of stopping it?

Well they would probably need to apply for planning permission and put that into the plan and have that approved. So unless they add it to the plan then there is nothing you can object to or stop really. You could ask for clarification that the road is not in the plans I guess.
We had a similar issue with a set of flats, but they didn't 'knock through' the road, although it would have been handy if they put a footpath in, as it's a good 10 minute walk to get to the other side.
A neighbour's lad used to just jump their fence over to the car parking spaces for the flats to short cut his way to school.
What they are doing seems pretty standard. The councils (and locals) don't tend to like additional through roads so you'll get a couple of dead ends almost meeting. There will probably pedestrian and cycle access as that ticks a few boxes. As above, they can't just change it without going through planning
They've done just that in our town recently - I feel sorry for the people in the 'hammerhead' who had uninterrupted views in three directions, but now have views of the estate and its traffic rolling through.
Pedestrian i can live with, not ideal but its the vehicle access thats going to be a nightmare if it happens. Kids always out there playing, theres a big green there and loads of really badly parked cars on the next road for them to run out of behind.

All the council information should be on their website. You can download the planning application, any associated documents, and the outcome of application with any conditions. Its also worth keeping an eye on the website for any amendments.

This, and the fact that by law the council should be organising planning meetings to which the public are entitled to attend.
Sadly councils are very efficient at not publishing intricate details, but there are FOI and planning committees minutes you can read.
You may not be able to influence any decision they make unless you put some effort in and start a group of like minded and fight it.
Harrogate BC issued planning applications for 1200 homes across from our family farm once the farmers had sold off the land to developers, this is in direct contravention of the terms of use of the land... but still the developers put in applications to change use and once that had hit the councils desk the whole process started... small notices to start with then published plans and applications in the local paper etc. Then once the local residents found out a group formed to fight the decision and it took 2 years to get the original terms of use changed at great expense to the developer who bought the land, because they tried to circumvent the process. Once that process had formally been invoked it was a simple task to attend meetings, get legal council to oppose some of the terms and change the original approach to something that’s workable for all residents and potential new residents. The planning has gone through now and within 6 years there will be new houses on the fields. As for the infrastructure, that’s a simple joke. There is one tiny single lane feeding the western edge and a main A road feeding the eastern edge (comes out of town) the increase in traffic has been calculated but the council aren’t going to widen nor change the lane, they are proposing speed bumps along it.. luckily for us we have 3 horse stables and 4 working farms along that lane and it’s designated as a country lane of “local significance” so fingers crossed it’ll stay like that.
