Mrs TJ and I hate air travel with a passion so we're planning a rail holiday via Paris, Barcelona and Valencia. It ain't cheap, especially as we want to stay in decent hotels, but the thought of 1st class travel arriving right in the heart of each city, then having a short walk to a nice hotel really appeals. Does anyone think the same and experienced it? If we like the first time, I'm thinking there are almost endless routes to try...

Do it! Go one way & come back another, stop at some smaller places, take sleeper trains if it works out cheaper than a train ticket plus hotel. In ES and FR I have been Paris>Lyon>Nice>Barcelona>Pamplona>etc and Paris>Bordeaux>Montpellier>Avignon>Paris. Also have flown to Malaga and travelled by train to Cordoba and Grenada. (I did lots of travelling with a Eurail ticket, then got a job on the railways so travelled cheap as chips with staff discount!)

No longer work on the railways but am planning to get a sleeper train to Venice with the family later this year (and fly back)

EDIT: Also fun to take day trips on the train from your base.

Yep, we've done the train to Barcelona, Seville, Jerez and Cordoba, and on a different trip to Paris, Munich and Zagreb

It's fantastic. As above, Seat 61 is the place to go for inspiration.

The most expensive ticket you'll but will be the one to St Pancreas...
