Going to London late May with Mrs Lunge and looking for some inspiring places to eat.
Note sure where we're staying yet, but we'll be going to see a show near Victoria, so accessible from there would be good. Thinking Mayfair/St James's/Soho ish.

Given my standards on curry based food are very high due to living in West Yorkshire, it was REALLY good.

Ate at Laphet in London recently and they now have one in Covent Garden. Excellent food and service and not silly money either. Would go again.
I quite like ‘the other Naughtly Piglet’ its part of a Theatre but tucked away to the north of Victoria. they do a lot of Natural wines which i like but plenty do not! quite relaxed not posh/stuffy but the food is excellent

Just north of Piccadilly Circus, Brasserie Zedel is a quirky and interesting place to eat - a grand underground French art deco restaurant with a lovely bar.
I ate here in November and would highly recommend it.

Beautiful food, been there a couple of times and last had lunch there a couple of weeks ago. Lunch was £35 each but 4 courses and very filling, great for a Michelin experience without the cost.

I like The Palomar in Rupert Street - Israeli/ eastern Mediterranean/ North African. Lots of players/ bowls that you share.
I'm going to C and R Cafe in Rupert Court tomorrow lunchtime for Malaysian/ Singaporean - chicken rice, kangkong, and fried carrot cake.
Oh yes, Mercato Metrolpolitano Mayfair for a daytime small glass of beer(!) or a cocktail.
I used the one at Southwark when my daughter was in a play at the Southwark Playhouse a few times and bumped into the Mayfair one running from the rain a couple of weeks back. Very good.

Have you ever tried Randall & Aubin? It's not a 'sit down restaurant' as the tables are high and you sit on stools, plus you can't book (but you rarely wait very long); it doesn't sound fun I know but it's charming. It's seafood btw in case that's a deal breaker.

I'd say Gaucho falls at the no "standard chain" criteria. I'd go Hawksmoor for steak - I realise they are rapidly heading towards being a chain, but at least they are still currently a London specific thing (I think).
Anyway, if you want curry, you want to go to Tayyabs. Accept no substitutes. The single thing I miss most about London since moving away 10 years ago.

Agree on Hawksmore rather than Gaucho.
A bit cliche, but The Ivy was nice when I visited there. There is also Petersham Nurseries in Covent Garden, I’ve not been there, but the original in Petersham is fantastic.
Ate at Korean Place called Arang on Golden Square last week. that was lovely, hot plates sunk into the table, lots of sizzling and making stuff up yourself, very 'interactive' and fun and not stupid money.
The staff were also lovely and very helpful to two pasty westerners new to the whole malarky.
If you fancy Mexican, Cafe Pacifico just North of Covent Garden is exquisite and a long term fave of myself and my American ex-pat missus.
Hawksmoor again and get a Shaky Pete. For budget steak Flatiron is also really decent.
Market Hall in Victoria if you want an upmarket food court type place for lunch. It sounds terrible but it's quite good really. Roti King is an option in here. Much better than all the chain places across the road.
Also Gunpowder or Dishoom if you haven't tried them yet. Or you're only a couple of stops from Brixton Market for lunch which can be quite interesting especially if you're not from London or maybe other cities have similar stuff nowadays.
Any of the Hawksmoor restaurants is your answer. Great cocktails, great food....consistently good.

Dishoom you can’t book and the best venue is the Shoreditch one which may be too far out.
I also agree Flatiron is decent at a reasonable price, though I could eat 2, the creamed spinach there is good.

Another vote for Hawksmoor but Borough one beats Spitalfields. I've only been to the Borough one but my daughter went to Spitalfields a couple of weeks ago and didn't have a good experience. That said they comp'd a couple of steaks which they used at Borough last night and really enjoyed it.
BTW they are in Manchester and Edinburgh now so definitely heading in the chain direction.

The Piccadilly Hawksmoor is like a more upmarket restaurant depending on what type of experience you’d prefer.
Add add my support for Dishoom too, remarkably good food but I found Spitalfields a bit too noisy for my liking. The home delivery Bacon Naan is an indulgent treat.
In fact my daughter went to Dishoom for breakfast then Hawksmoor for dinner yesterday. I had a coffee without cake on my cafe stop on the bike.
Not been for a while, but if you like tapas, I really enjoyed Barrafina.
