im sure there was a thread on here just a few weeks ago about this, but the search doesnt bring up anything recent, so ill try a fresh one.

me and missus staying in a b&b just a few miles south of york. we've been a couple of times before, done a ghost walk, walked round the shambles etc, but dont know the place tooooo well. itd be nice to have somewhere we know will be good for a meal or a few drinks, rather than walking aimlessly around til we find somewhere we guess may be ok. dont like 'trendy' boomboom places, do like something with a bit of charm, real ale, home cooked food etc.

also done the dungeons, not too bothered bout jorvik or rail museum..... anything else to consider during the daytime?

thanks 🙂

Rustique do stupidly good food at very reasonable prices.

There's the smaller, original place near the Dungeons or the bigger, busier one at the Minster end of Lendal.

Both great.
I like the bigger one, personally - bit more lively.

Ate at the Blue Bicycle a couple of years ago and was excellent, but seem to recall it was quite pricey.

Is the Spread Eagle still open?

Not been to York for a few years but the food & beer in the Spread Eagle used to be spectacular.

Very much a 'spit & sawdust' pub (yes, it actually had sawdust on the floors) with bands playing upstairs and a great atmosphere. Was very popular with students too.

On things to do, I recently took an overseas visitor to York because he wanted to do the chocolate experience. Against my expectations it was actually quite good. I now know why Hershey bars taste of rancid milk.

Evil Eye down Stonegate, Thai food and cocktails, then head few meters down the road to House of Trembling Madness, last time I read they had over 600 ales on offer.

Pub food, can recommend the Rose and Crown just on Lawrence Street near Walmgate Bar, 10 mins walk from city center roughly. Just been renovated and new owners really into their home cooked food/pub grub. Took the SO few weeks ago and the food was incredible. If you go late on a Thursday night I think it is, the backroom turns into an open mic night if that's your cup of tea.

Dunno about earlier but at the end of a very long night, a coffee in El Piano is always a god move 🙂

Virtually any one of the restaurants on Walmgate/Fossgate.
We particularly like Barbakan, which is a Polish restaurant with amazing cakes (If you can fit them in after a meal)
Rustique (French) is very good, but you do need to book.

For drinks the Evil Eye is very good (was in there on Friday), and the House of Trembling Madness.

It's actually pretty hard to find a bad (non chain) place in central York.

Lots and lots of real ale pubs.

Brigantes at the top of Micklegate is good for food and beer. Good range of real ales and mainland Europe beers. Ordered food off menu a few times (beer battered halloumi with chips and mushy peas is really nice)

Rook and Gaskill is brill for beer as well. All handpulls are £2.80. They also do a resonably priced burger from 6pm.

3 Legged Mare on Petergate followed by a meal at Plunketts (Mexican type stuff - absolutely brilliant), Mama Mias on Gillygate (fantastic Italian) or Bennetts opposite the Minster (my mate is head chef and its fantastic).

You're then at the right side of town to visit all these drinking outlets with the bloody stupid names.

thanks everyone, back now and visited a fair few of those suggestions.....

had a great burger in the rose and crown first night, and the next night on the beer. visited evil eye, house of trembling madness (luvverly chocolate stout), and also took in a few suggestions from the b&b where we stayed, golden fleece (haunted pub?), ye old starre (oldest pub), and the lendal cellars. got yapping to another couple and tagged on for a meal with them in a nice turkish place opposite red chilli (george hudson st?)

had a great couple of days, so thanks again, we love york 🙂
