Obvious problems are obvious mind!
"Today, on 15 November, the European Parliament has decided that there should be space for at least eight bicycles on each train within the EU.
"International experience from Denmark and the Netherlands shows that this increases both the train journey and the cycling. Now there are opportunities to increase the climate-smart and health-promoting travel in Sweden even more, "says Lars Strömgren, chairman of the association Svensk Cykling.
>The decision in the European Parliament is a part of "making it easier to combine cycle and rail travel" by ensuring that there are designated places where you can ride a bike on all passenger journeys in the EU countries.
Now the Travel Directive goes on to jointly treat the European Parliament, the EU Commission and the Council of Ministers. If the three instances agree, the decision can come into force no earlier than 2020
European Parliament decision on bicycles on trains:
"Travelers should be allowed to take bicycles on board the train, including on high-speed, long-distance, cross-border and local trains. All new or upgraded passenger trains shall be equipped with a clearly specified place for transport of at least eight mounted bicycles not later than two years after the entry into force of this Regulation. Railway undertakings, ticket vendors, tour operators and, where applicable, station managers shall inform passengers, at the latest when they purchase the ticket, the terms of transport of bicycles on all trains in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 454/2011.
The Caledonian Sleeper staff were saying last year that they anticipate less bike places on the new trains they are getting. I haven’t managed a holiday this year so I don’t know if that’s been implemented yet.
With people like May in charge we will never get legislation like the above. Then again, with her in charge, we might never exit the EU.
Great idea in principle.
However, as someone who used to commute into that there London from Kent, creating space for 8 bikes on every train would have made the journey even more hellish.
not really going to be an issue for here is it lol can get 6 bikes on our local trains. Train staff move people so you can get your bike in.
No issue on my local line either, you can get as many bikes as you can squeeze in tbh, which is handy.
Thank God brexit will save us from this loony nonsense. Bikes on trains? They'll be demanding seats and windows next.
If they can do it in California, surely they can do it here?

nice, but not great for those that can't lift a bike, heavier bikes etc.
We must obey our Danish masters

Train staff move people so you can get your bike in.
Not on northern trains they don’t! I’ve had many a ‘discussion’ with folk who won’t get up from the fold down seats in the bike storage section to let bikes in (when other seats are available not 4 feet from them). Train staff did nothing, and oft try to enforce the ‘no more than 2 bikes per train rule’ despite loads of room
We still have trains in the UK that drop turds onto the track so I wouldn't get too enthusiastic about progress if I were you. However that's probably only because some tosser with a spreadsheet hasn't managed to monetise turds yet.
