If I wanted to augment the standard route map with commentary at particular points to make awkward junctions or route finding easier or even just point out things of interest.

It could be as simple as "Slow down on this hill as the turning is halfway down on the right" that plays as you crest the hill or "The track normally looks horrible and muddy but is fine just around the next bend" or "See the big house on the left - Lady Di gave me a BJ in the lobby once"

These should be triggered as text pop ups with the option of automatic audio as you ride/walk over the carefully placed pin.

Can it easily be done and if so, how?

You can do that commentary thing in ridewithgps. I don't know about the text/speech option but triggering speech by location certainly works.

That seems to be turn by turn instructions for a route which kind of does what I want but ideally I would like to be able to pin then to a map so even if you weren't following a particular route you could still get the commentary. More for the points of interest than the route details, I guess I used a bad example in my original post, sorry.

Google maps allows you to create a route and pin things to that route. I've done that for photos of a trail as an early attempt of a visual record of trail inspections...I thought it would be handy as a start to some kind of mobile app to allow me to do that easier.
Unsure if it would allow an audio file to be added and no idea if it would play automatically but might be worth a nosey.

You can attach audio and video to pin in Google Maps and that was my first thought. As far as I can tell though you then need to open google maps, find the pin, click on it, click on the link, click play and then it is there!!!

An option but not ideal. It is my fall-back plan
