We've got a 3m sq area at the top of the garden for the kids stuff - slide etc. It's currently covered in bark chippings but could do with being deeper.
I've just taken down a pine tree and topped off a holly tree.
Having taken all the twigs off the holly - i.e. getting rid of the spiky leaves - is there any reason i couldn't use a garden shredder to chip up the pine and holly branches and mix it all in?

None, but they probably will rot quickly.
