I was going to try and rely on plugging my phone in at cafe stops, but starting to think that might be too frustrating.

Been looking at this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0063AAIRG/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers#productDetails

Any others to consider?
Any downsides?

Alternatively - is there anything that takes 18650 batteries - I've got loads of those.

Mophie or powermonkey are good brands.

Have a look at the New Trent stuff as well. I've got a Power Rock* (battery extender case) and an iCarrier (external battery).

*Now discontinued I think

There's loads of other ones on Amazon/ebay, no idea if the one above is any good

I use an Anker Astro E4 (13000 mAh) and no probs so far, gets me about 4-5 charges on a 4s, led torch v useful, 2 usb outputs. Bought for 27 quid in sale, I see its currently the same price as the one you linked.

I use a power bank thing like the OP when I'm doing long trips (not that Anker one, but very similar). Works very well.

My technique is to stick the powerbank in the side pocket of a tri-bag like this:

And then run a very short cable from that to the phone which I keep mounted on my bars. That way the phone is always at 100% charge.

There used to be a seller on ebay which sold a thing that took 18650 batteries and gave you a usb charging port, 'sure electronics' i think, may do what you want.

After taking a longer look, it seems there are loads of 18650 chargers (I guess it's what most of them have inside anyway), but not a single one with an amazon review.
The lack of reviews on Ebay is annoying. Feedback is a fairly useless guide.

Looking on DealExtreme, they only have 1 or 2 reviews. Not enough to feel confident.

Reading some Anker reviews on Amazon it seems Anker are quite active in support, but pressure customers to change reviews to positive after having replacements sent.

I think I'll probably go with one of those though - trying to decide between about 4 models all at £20ish.

I've plumped for the Anker Slim3 because I liked the lack of surface buttons and thought it would be better for just strapping to my iPhone in the back pocket.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks everyone!

Whichever piggyback solution you go for, consider putting your phone in airplane mode to conserve battery life further.
It means that you'll be out of touch, but that's quite often the case when in remote areas anyway, and you can always switch airplane mode off every hour or so (If you're absolutely desperate to check if anybody wants to bug you about something irrelevant to your riding)

I have an excellent waterproof battery case from Magellan with an enhanced GPS for the iphone 3/3GS. It's good for a long day's riding/snowboarding but would probably have to be used frugally on a multi day adventure.

It's surplus to requirements - I'm open to offers - mail in profile 😛

The downside of that is that any live tracking won't work and, perhaps more seriously, if you do have a nasty off then your partner/buddy won't be able to locate you using BuddyBeacon/Find my iPhone/etc

I've got an Anker, I think mine's the 20,000mAh version, and it works just fine. The bigger ones have two USB ports, and you can charge an iPad off them, too.

Yes, iPhone GPS doesn't really work with Airplane mode enabled.

It uses data to triangulate. As soon as GPS gets lost (tunnel or whatever), it doesn't tend to get it back.

I've read that turning off 3G and Wi-Fi seperately still works, but on my phone, it automatically turned 3G back on, when it needed it.

I plan to use BikeHub Sat Nav, so I'll probably be looking at the screen a lot (as I don't know the route), so turning the brightness down will also help.

Never seen this. I've happily used iPhone GPS abroad where I had data turned off (for obvious reasons) and it had no problem finding or keeping a lock.

Google Mintyboost. Then make your own, using as many 18650s as you want. It also runs off AA batteries.
I added a li ion charging circuit, also from Adafruit. Now I can recharge the 18650 pack from a USB plug.
Let me know if you need any more help!

I'd seen that when I was looking at solar chargers.
Looks great, I may experiment in the future.

Definitely doing a DIY Solar charger - My son and I have bought a load of broken/chipped solar cells and generators for some fun projects.

My slim3 arrived today.
Looks good. Packaged well. Instructions clear and in proper English 🙂
Came with 3/4 charge, so I'm just charging up now.

Slightly bigger than my iPhone 4 in length and width. About the same thickness.

At 6000mAh it should do 2 full charges, so that should see me through a 3-day bivy (should I ever get the chance!).
