Probs mentioned above .. hope you like 12 point turns!!!!😀
I had a hire xc60 the last few days even that was pushing the limits of what constitutes "in a parking space"
I jumped in my friends Ranger yesterday and skimmed through his on board computer, 16mpg average,,, ouch!
I’d quite fancy. Nissan p200, looks like a sensible bakkie and I could probably justify it , in my mind anyway, but a van is probably more useful. Quite like the look of the doblo pick up too.
I was doing the despatch checks on a bunch of vehicles this morning, and when I got to this one, and opened the back up, I suddenly remembered this thread and thought it’s exactly what the OP actually needs; Ford Transit Tourneo Connect. Seven seater, with a big plastic tray set across the tops of the rear pair of seats. Masses of room for all the wet sandy stuff in the back, all nice and safe, and still room for five, and room for seven if necessary.

Your camera makes it look worse to look at than that l200 up there.
And it's a transit so it'll rust for fun.
Many better options than a ford.
I own a 2014 Transit Connect. No rust that I can tell yet despite living for most of that time in the Northeast USA where there is snow all winter and they salt the roads. Overall, it's a great utility vehicle, but isn't refined. They do most of their business for fleets and somewhat apathetically converted it to passenger duty. If you can get by that, you get about the most space possible for the footprint.
If you don't use the rear seats, I'd just unbolt them and take them out. The super low/flat load floor is great. The one exception is if you want to toss a pad in and sleep in the back. Then keep the third row in so things are level.
Can't see any of the pluses that isn't covered by a good small van and none of your requirements cover what a pickup does well.
My dislike for them is safety, for others and the occupants
Hit someone and you will be more likely to kill them
Also, I used to drive leeds to Sheffield daily on the M1. These things always got completely out of shape when they had to brake hard in a very scary way.
Got me thinking.. i have a lifelong pickup habit i have owned..
1980 Nissan Doublecab 2 wheel drive six seat "thing"
Sierra P100
VW Caddy MK1
Mitsubishi L200 double cab
Nissan Navara MK1
Nissan Navara current model
Always had a proper car aswell
Those Tourneo Connects seem really good for that kind of lifestyle.
I very nearly bought a brand new one when we bought the SMax but the towbar nose weight is only 75kg and I needed capacity for 90kg for heavier loads. Were it not for that there'd be a two year old one on my drive right now.
And it’s a transit so it’ll rust for fun.
Many better options than a ford.
It’s 2021, not 1971, and many thousands of Trannies lasted a lot longer being thrashed around the motorways of Britain and Europe carrying bands and their kit than most of the competition.
None of the competition has a heated screen, the interior is equal to or better than the competition as well, I know, I see and drive pretty much all of the competition at work.
The second photo down I used a wide angle lens, which should be fairly obvious...
It’s not a pretty vehicle, but for its size it’s practical and above all comfy, unlike every Berlingo or Partner it’s been my misfortune to have to sit in and drive over the last five years, except for the very latest versions I find them horrible, hateful misbegotten pieces of crap, but lots of people seem to like them.
I read your OP but cant be arsed reading beyond. i had a Navara 2010 for 8 yrs. Bought 2nd hand 2012 written off by Nissan January 2020. Nissan wrote it off due to chassis rot and paid me book value of £4500 + £500 I was quite happy as clutch needed replacing and turbo died. It had some work over the years, a leaf spring, heater matrix, half shaft etc so your belief they dont breakdown seems naive.
It was used for waterski boat towing, launching and retrieving. excellent for that but 80% of the year it was an expensive toy. I loved it, but clutch was heavy so wouldnt have loved it if I was driving in traffic regularly. Never felt I could leave anything of value in the tray, but my twin cab had cinema type back seats that folded up or down so I could use the cab to stow a bike or large valuables. but in all honesty the tray was never secure so you could never leave anything of value in it unattended. They're not that practical day to day, but as a big boy toy, fun if you like a high seating position and certain limited practicalities, useful for collecting furniture and white goods / collecting logs / taking stuff to the tip. I'm missing it in some respects, but very definitely not in others.
It’s 2021, not 1971, and many thousands of Trannies lasted a lot longer being thrashed around the motorways of Britain and Europe carrying bands and their kit than most of the competition.
Yes it's not 1971 as you said. The competition moved on. Modern transits /fords in general still rust faster than the competition. It's a fact of life.
I know, I see and drive pretty much all of the competition at work.
Of course when their new /nearly new . A very.narrow aspect of a cars time.in owner ship of anyone so not really the catch all authoritive statement you think it is.
My 2009 Transit panel Van Motorhome has very little rust. It's remarkably rust free given your "facts"
🤦
I owned a t5 for 9 years and have repaced it with an Amarok 2.0l, does 35mpg av most of the time, a little more with care.
It has 5 seats, air bags etc air con and sat nav etc, a T5 with the same spec mileage would have cost a lot more. Has a high seating position, great on bumpy poholed roads. Will wade through 600mm of water which is handy in flash floods we seem to get more often. Was also usefull in the recent snow etc.
I have a canopy on the back which us essential for security with bikes etc.
Not fast but fast enough given the traffic, nice relaxing drive.
Bit of a pain to park but some forward thinking and it's ok.
I've had a few and loved them - and I do 30k+ a year.
Have a Discovery van now though

One outlier doesn't change much . Should frame it a Mk6 facelift with minimal rust on the undercarriage is a rare thing indeed. It's there by design. - that is -ive cut them open and repaired the damage and seen the extent of the closed end water traps made by the production process. It's criminal

I don’t know if it’ll come to the U.K., but I don’t see why not, Hyundai are producing a compact pickup truck, four/five seat, based on the Santa Fe underpinnings, nice looking thing, and a lot more practical in many ways than something like a Ranger et al.

nice looking thin
Yeah, about 2 days too late there with that 😉
I live in Gower which, from a cyclist’s perspective has the worst drivers I have found in the UK. They drive like half witted psychopaths despite the fact that the place is so small it’s hardly worth driving round. It is also full of pickups and for some reason they are really annoying when you are out cycling. It maybe the size of them or the fact that they drivers feel invincible but they close pass you and cut you up every ride and they seem to rev the engine and stink you out with diesel fumes. Not all of them of course and it’s not confined to pickups (most big vehicles on narrow roads seem to do it), but most days a pick up will pee you off at some point.
Yes I know the place is full of farmers too... but there are more pickups than farms here and loads of them are clean.
and a lot more practical in many ways than something like a Ranger et al.
Which ways exactly ? I see many very similar short comings
I'd rather have a santafe than that thing and that's saying something as I swore I'd never buy another Hyundai.
and a lot more practical in many ways than something like a Ranger et al.
Not seeing the extra practicality tbh
Less load space
Probably can't fit a hardtop
Probably not 4 x 4
TR - accusing CZ of being authoritative is a bit rich coming from you. Also, if you read around the rest of the forum, you might realise that trying to pick an argument with CZ right now is not a nice thing to do.
Give it a rest.
Hyundai are producing a compact pickup truck...
Compact pickup you say? I found a review:
This would be a good alternative , though not available in Europe
https://pickupand4x4.co.uk/vw-tarok-pickup/
@towpathman - you obviously don't know the rules.
If it's a car, van or motorhome then trail-rat is the voice of authority and he's very diplomatic dispensing his vehicular wisdom 🤦
Hyundai have re-invented the Honda Ridgeline. The first gen Ridgeline iirc, had a way to open up the back of the cabin to the bed, so you could get longer loads in.
That Hyundai suffers from the same problem modern pickups do - if you want a cabin that holds more than 2 people, you end up with a short bed somewhere between 4-6 ft.
I got a 4x8 foot sheet inside an old Santa Fe. Also a 10 foot kayak.
Caddy LWB van (really neat looking vehicle that) or any decent estate and a Bootbuddy.
I’ve had my Bootbuddy for over 10 years now - in 2 Audi estates and never regretted the choice. Car handling. Bike inside so M-Way carpark stops are less nerve racking. Cleans up nice to carry 4 passengers with legroom.
https://www.boot-buddy.com/
I’m still hankering after a Subaru Baja...
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a15134057/subaru-baja-turbo-short-take-road-test/
I have seen a pickup versions of a Dacia Duster in South America.
Actually there are pick up versions of quite a few sensibly sized cars available in some markets. Fiat Punto, Vauxhall Corsa, VW Caddy type things.

I've been bobbing up and down the M6 all week in our work '13 Transit.
It's many things, from smelling of diesel fumes if you stay still too long on a cold day to the stereo that is just plain rubbish and the lack of air conditioning.
There was moss growing out of the gutters, and a thick layer of mildew covering it's bumps and scrapes. But it's not rusty, surprisingly.
But it’s not rusty, surprisingly.
Oh it is.
Somewhere underneath.
S....L....O....W....L....Y.... eating itself alive.
Its a Transhit.
We have had various pickups as daily drivers/family trucks for at least the last 10 years and can’t see us being without one. We need 4x4, something to tow a horse box, a track car and be a general workhorse around the farm. We also have a lot of flooding that we’d not get through in anything other than a 4x4/truck.
Drawbacks... they’re a bit big, not much room in the back.
Saying all that - would I have one if we lived in a town/didn’t need 4x4 - hell no. A van would be better in every way, struggle to get my head around the polished pavement princesses with a lift kit, light bars etc that are used to go to the gym/shops 😂
Also: tailgates make a perfect baby changing table.
I know someone who hates Fords because they all rust immediately. When I finally quizzed him on it it was because he'd had a Capri then a Cortina and then an XR2 which had all got rusty wings and sills etc. He's never been in a Ford since.
If you're going to be prejudiced at least use current information.
People who hate Ford tend to think that mid-90s Vauxhalls are the peak of automotive design.
I think you should all pipe down. Trail Rat has spoken 😀
Did the OP ever return to the thread?
I suspected a troll to get everyone worked up into a froth.
Got my new van midweek and chucked my tools in today...
It's not exactly the most practical, but it's a nice place to be and serves me beetter than a pick up for most (not all) things

Is there any reason you go for those class of vehicles rather than a full on van? - no dig or anything, just curious.

Other than that, partly because I just prefer them
Extra power for towing - my current caravan is massive
Extra creature comforts
Partly because in 11 years of working away from home in hotels, I've never had one broken into. Park a van at a Travelodge and there's a very high possibility that the doors will have been crowbarred open in the morning
I was amazed by the stat that 25% of discos are the commercial type. I don't think I've ever noticed one in real life

Side by side you can (sometimes) spot them. The last generation had black wing mirrors for example rather than body-colored. There's a thriving business for converting them with rear seats, electric windows etc. A couple of friends have one of each. You wouldn't guess that one was originally a van, but when you look closely the rear seats are obviously different to the OEM ones.
Apparently the cost of converting is substantially cheaper than the difference in purchase price + tax savings which is why there are so many of them.

Not necessarily. For ages now, they have looked pretty much identical to the same spec car version. The only clues are the mesh bulkhead and the rear windows have solid black plastic internal covers, rather than privacy glass - see my white one above
I had no idea there were actually van/commercial versions of the Disco! Talk about well disguised! The new Defender should lend itself well to that.
I’ve just read an article about the new Hyundai Santa Cruz, as pointed out, it’s bed is shorter than vehicles like the L200, Ranger, HiLux, etc, but not everyone who wants a pickup needs a sodding great truck! There have been many small, successful pickups over the years, like the Mini, the Skoda Fabia, and a bunch of other car-sized pickups.
The turbo 2.5 version of the Santa Cruz has over 300Nm of torques, and can tow up to 5000lb, and has four wheel drive, but the Tucson and Santa Fe do as well, same underpinnings. It’s a good looking vehicle and I can see a niche for it.
So appears to be what would be the slightly shorter 'normal-sized' pick-up for UK.
With the biggest engine it has impressive towing but is still a pick-up so too many compromises for a lot of people.
I like the look of that but I don't want one.
That Hyundai is the 2021 equivalent that daft little 2-seater Suzuki X-90 IMO.
