My daughters have a couple of laptops that are probably about 10 yrs old. They are unsure of where the chargers are, and even if they are password protected.
They want to dispose of them, but want to see if there are any photos on there that they want.
Can i just remove the HDD ( neither are SSD) and use a lead from my pc or laptop to power the HDD as an additional drive. Will i need the password that the laptop used on startup, or can i see the storage without that?
Any idea what lead i would need? Im guessing the same lead for when whe have cloned HDD onto SSD on other machines? Or is the interface different?

A lead should do it. Usb to sata or whatever the drives are. Only a few quid and pretty simple. Never had password or security issues doing it this way.

There is no difference interface-wise between HDD and SSD. Of that era both would almost certainly SATA, so you'd need a SATA > USB data connection and some means of supplying SATA power. If you have a "lead" from a prior cloning process then that may well be appropriate but exactly what that lead may be is guesswork unless you can provide a photo or some such.
Whether or not you'll need a password is a big old bag of "it depends."
If they don't know whether there are any photos on there that they want, they don't want them all that badly. 😁
